A spade of Damocles hanging over our heads, 6/18/10 by Alberto Jones

A Worldwide Battle of Life and Death. Third Chapter, 5/1/2010 by Alberto Jones, who examines the case for reparations. Una Batalla Mundial de Vida o Muerte. Tercera Parte, 5/1/10

A worldwide Battle of Life and Death, Part II, 4/4/10 by Alberto Jones: the author conducts a frank discussion of racism in Cuba today, without falling into the trap set by dissidents working with the plantocracy exiled in Miami.

Una Batalla Mundial de Vida o Muerte. Segunda Parte.

The State of Race in 21st Century Cuban Socialism: Two Opposing Views Outside Cuba, 3/1/10, James Early: in response to Carlos Moore's recent articles.

Carlos Moore comments on the death of hunger striker Zapata, 2/28/10: "Zapata's ordeal is being spun from the other side of the coin, too -- the predominantly white and U.S.-based, right-wing anti-Castro opposition who clearly stand to score political points from the case of a black martyr. Righteous declarations can be expected from organizations such as Democracy Movement, the Cuban American National Foundation, the Cuban Liberty Council and, especially, the Cuban Democratic Directorate. Many Cuban civil-rights activists accuse these groups of working to corral and control the new internal opposition forces on behalf of interests linked to Cuba's former Jim Crow oligarchy. That's why they see U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart's "indignation'' over Zapata's death, as much as president Raúl Castro's "regrets,'' as a double farce." -- Some observers credit Alberto Jones and Claude Betancourt's articles for this historic turn against the Miami Plantocracy, unprecedented, to our knowledge, in any statements by Black Cuban dissident groups. Their articles detailed the long running schemes to recruit black dissidents and support them via the usual Miami mechanisms, calling into question the legitimacy of these movements. Moore's statements cannot erase this history, but at least represent a step towards stopping the dubious spectacle of AfroCubans fighting openly on behalf of the remnants of Cuba's plantocracy.

Haiti: A Moment of Reckoning, 1/13/2010 by Alberto Jones: "Nowhere in the world could our investment achieve higher return, if the United Nations and every worldwide humanitarian organization in the world would open an honest, fair and respectful discussion with Cuba that would enable the relocation of thousands of the earthquake victims in Haiti to vacant school buildings in Cuba where they could receive all basic human needs, as every country, especially the developed ones, can contribute to the financial operation of this unprecedented humanitarian project.

Beyond the immediate needs, Haiti will need longtime help to get back on their feet. Tens of  thousands of fallow acreage in Cuba could be leased to provide jobs for these victims and food security for our region, under a similar international goodwill project."

Acting on Our Conscience Briefing Sheet: roadmap for Diaspora support of Miami-backed dissidents Claude Betancourt, 1/6/2010 "The fourth and fifth sections, "Prominent Civil Rights leaders" and "Designated US-based representatives of the two chief Cuban civil rights movements," list a series of persons and organizations. Overall, they show a number of disturbing signs of long standing links with the Miami hard right, sponsor of so much terrorism against Cuba.

The Citizens Com
mittee for Racial Integration (CIR) has for its Miami spokeswoman Victoria Ruiz Labrit, a Cuban dissident now in Miami who has worked for Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen and also has the support of the Diaz-Balarts, a former slave owning family which supplies two Congressman for the Miami machine. According to FedSpending.org, Ruiz Labrit was funded by Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen in 2004 and 2005, when she received $47,000. Many of us will remember Ros Lehtinen for her 1989 Congressional campaign, which included advocacy for the release of the infamous Orlando Bosch, recognized by all sides as the author of the destruction of a Cubana airliner in 1976, which killed 73 civilians."

A Worldwide Battle of Life and Death. Part I, 12/25/09 Alberto Jones:  "The crisis of the Balseros in 1994 brought 35,000 Cuban immigrants to south Florida, with a notable increase in the presence of Blacks, which lead numerous Think Tank groups in the US to carry out a number of demographic studies in Cuba through which they determined a substantial shift in favor of Afro-Cubans and mixed race, which some placed as high as 62% of the population. These findings introduced a radical change in most counterrevolutionary groups' thinking in the United States. Where they had shunned Blacks historically, they now found themselves actively recruiting every Afro-Cuban they could get their hands on, hoping to promote them to front desk activities and leadership positions.

Emergent leadership academies were created under the guidance of many Human Rights and Afro-American Civil Rights organizations and some historical Black Universities, which pumped out a number of graduates, who in turn, were charged with fomenting groups of Afro-Cubans inside Cuba under the cover of Independent Librarians, Independent Journalists, Independent Medical Care, Independent everything else."

Reflections on Cuba, Race, and Politics, by James Early, Soul Magazine, 1999, Manning Marable, editor

El Racismo en Cuba. Una Contribucion al Debate, Por Ivan Cesar Martinez, 12/9/2009

Laying the groundwork for another 1912, 12/8/09, Alberto Jones comments on the Carlos Moore letter, "Acting on Our Conscience." - "Approximately fifteen years ago, a well funded campaign organized by the US-AID, NED, and right-wing Cuban-American groups in south Florida and elsewhere was poised to create an Afro-Cuban/anti-Castro leadership corps, charged with fomenting oppositions groups inside Cuba disguised as Independent Journalists, Farmers, Librarians, Healthcare workers and others and to dilute the historical Afro-American support of Cuba. Evidently December 1, 2009 was their chosen D-Day.

After an intensive lobbying campaign of phone calls, e-mails, letters to the editor and Human Rights Organizations’ fraudulent assessments, an explosive letter entitled “Acting on Our Conscience” scathingly described the brutal government-imposed racism in Cuba and captured the signature of over 60 prominent Afro-American and Caribbean scholars, politicians, film makers and other professionals.

In fact, the reason that Mexico lags behind the United States in development to this day is the loss of territory that Mexico suffered as a direct consequence of attempting to free the slaves illegally brought to Texas by Americans. That set off the chain of events which led to the illegal provocation of war against Mexico by President Polk, which was denounced by then Congressman Abraham Lincoln and later described as atrocity by then Army Capt. Ullyses S. Grant.”

Remittances - money sent by Cubans in the United States to their families in Cuba - go mostly to white Cubans, 30 to 40 percent. Only 5 to 10 percent goes to Black Cubans... Twenty percent of the audience was African North Americans, who met with other African North Americans and Alberto Jones on Sunday to explore a remittance program for Afro-Cubans and to educate and organize African North Americans to put an end to the U.S. blockade and travel embargo against Cuba."

When I first went to Cuba in 1974, years after the first waves of gusano defections to Miami, I was informed by reliable medical authorities that so many whites had left that by then fully 80 percent of the Cuban population was susceptible to sickle cell anemia. In other words, Cuba was becoming darker by white political default."

Esteban Morales at meeting on racism in Havana: En la Cofradía de la Negritud, Elsie Carbó, 22/7/10

Esteban Morales expelled from the Communist Party for his article on corruption
, 6/29/10   A compendium of articles. Few Cuban sources have commented on the fact that while many have criticized the corruption in Cuba, it is only the leading researcher on race in Cuba who is singled out for punishment. They refer to him as a specialist on US affairs.

Esteban Morales Booted from Cuba’s Communist Party
6/28/2010 Havana Times: "Esteban Morales, PhD., has been “separated from the ranks” of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) for his publication of an article denouncing what he considers the counter-revolutionary corruption and bureaucracy that exists in the country. The Playa Municipal Committee of the PCC communicated its decision to the grassroots level of the Party."

Corruption: The true counter-revolution?  4/21/2010 Progreso: "Without a doubt, it is becoming evident that there are people in positions of government and state who are girding themselves financially for when the Revolution falls, and others may have everything almost ready to transfer state-owned assets to private hands, as happened in the old USSR." Morales is a specialist on the US and the author of many texts on race in Cuba.

CUBA: Replica Slave Ship Drops Anchor amidst Debate on Racism  3/24/2010 IPS: "The issue is gaining visibility, which gives us hope that progress will continue to be made," Norberto Mesa, founder of the Cofradía de la Negritud (CONEG), a "brotherhood" or association of black people aimed at raising awareness about the problem, told IPS. According to CONEG, racial inequality is a growing problem in Cuba, where the latest census, from 2002, indicates that of a total population of 11.18 million, 7.2 million were white, 1.13 million black, and 2.78 mixed-race, based on self-identification. However, scholars estimate that the Cuban population is actually around 60 to 70 percent black or mixed-race.

Haiti: An Unwelcome Katrina Redux  1/18/2010 Op Ed News: by Cynthia McKinney - "Therefore, we note here the writings of Ms. Marguerite Laurent, whom I met in her capacity as attorney for ousted President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Ms. Laurent reminds us of Haiti's offshore oil and other mineral riches and recent revivial of an old idea to use Haiti and an oil refinery to be built there as a transshipment terminal for U.S. supertankers. Ms. Laurent, also known as Ezili Danto of the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network (HLLN), writes: "There is evidence that the United States found oil in Haiti decades ago and due to the geopolitical circumstances and big business interests of that era made the decision to keep Haitian oil in reserve for when Middle Eastern oil had dried up. This is detailed by Dr. Georges Michel in an article dated March 27, 2004 outlining the history of oil explorations and oil reserves in Haiti and in the research of Dr. Ginette and Daniel Mathurin."

Obama authorizes covert economic war against Venezuela  1/18/2010 Wayne Madsen Report on Milfuegos: "WMR's intelligence sources have reported that the Obama administration has authorized an economic war against Venezuela in order to destabilize the government of President Hugo Chavez. After a successful coup against Chavez ally, President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras, and the very thin 51-49 percent electorial win by Chile's billionaire right-winger Sebastian Pinera on January 17, a buoyed Obama White House has given a green light for political operatives in Venezuela, many of whom operate under the cover of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to set the stage for massive street demonstrations to protest Chavez's devaluation of the bolivar, Venezuela's currency… The Obama administration's assault is two-fold: economic and political. Pressure is being applied against the gasoline chain Citgo, which is owned by the Venezuelan state oil company, PDVSA, and Venezuelan investment favorability ratings. Politically, the U.S. is overtly and covertly funneling money to anti-Chavez groups through the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and groups affiliated with George Soros."

CARICOM BLOCKED ...as US takes control of airport
1/17/2010 T&T Express: "THE CARIBBEAN Community’s emergency aid mission to Haiti, comprising Heads of Government and leading technical officials, failed to secure permission Friday to land at that devastated country’s airport, now under the control of the United States." In Katrina, as in any other disaster, FEMA doctrine's top priority is to establish control.

Shades of Katrina: No help for Haitians who need it most  1/16/2010 SF Bay View: "According to CNN tonight (Jan. 15), “for security reasons,” the U.N. required all doctors and nurses to leave one small Port-au-Prince hospital, full of badly wounded Haitians, some today post-surgery. And CNN showed the doctors and nurses in trucks being driven away abandoning patients to … no care at all. No U.N. security left to guard the desperately ill or, better yet, guarding the hospital with doctors and nurses inside helping their patients. What in hell might have been the security threat that 3,000 (seemingly absent in helping dig buried people out) U.N. soldiers stationed in Port-au-Prince couldn’t handle? “Security” is the U.N. Haiti mandate, after all. Fear of poor Black people … so sadly reminiscent of the response to Katrina, and so lacking in actual evidence."

Honduran Garifuna Culture Threatened by Coup  9/4/2009 New American Media: by Willie Thompson - "The Honduran de facto coup government under Roberto Micheletti plans to eliminate the Honduran Garifuna people and culture. Micheletti has rescinded the Manuel Zelaya authorization to teach in the Garifuna language in school and to teach the language itself. All scholarships to Garifuna students have been eliminated. Now, Micheletti, with no opposition from the U.S. State Department, has set Sept. 1, 2009, to take over the Garifuna built and operated hospital and fire its Latin American Medical School (ELAM) trained Garifuna physicians, including Dr. Luther Castillo Harry, its founder. The army, at 9000, and the police, at 14,000 and notoriously corrupt, are dwarfed by the number of people in the streets. The golpistas, many of them ibero-spanish, have taken to wearing white as a demonstration of their backing for the coup.

"No one believes that a man with a name that similar to hers would not know who she is," the source told Redding News Review. "He clearly knew who she was and what she looked like but stopped her anyway." ...The source - who did not want to be identified in fear that they might lose their job - also said that the incident has resulted in "fighting and heated arguments between white and black officers." "This case is tearing the department apart," the source said. "The blacks say the whites were screwing with her, but the white officers are saying that she should have stopped."

Assata and Posada: Two different colors, two different stories  5/18/2005 SF Bay View: "The generally unacknowledged factor of Posada and Bosch’s blowing up of the Cubana airliner, however, is this. If tourists to Cuba take the time to visit Havana’s Sport’s Palace, guides will inevitably take them to the memorial wall. From there, visitors will be greeted by row after row of young, mostly Black faces staring back at them – photographs of Cuba’s Olympic athletes who were returning from the Pan American Games in Venezuela and were on board the airliner Posada and Bosch likely bombed. Therefore, by putting a $1 million bounty on Sister Shakur, who, they say, is linked to the killing of one white person, while allowing Posada and Bosch remain free in the U.S. after killing at least 73 mostly Black people, the U.S. has once again exposed itself as a government that continues to capitulate to and accommodate itself to racism."

U.S. Policy on Cuba Deprives Black Americans, Black AmericaWeb, 11/17: "traveling to Cuba - a majority-black nation - must remain a no-no for most of us, otherwise Miami's Cuban exiles, who are more than 90 percent white, will put a chokehold on the Bush administration's re- election bid.  But the larger issue regarding the travel ban to Cuba isn't the White House's political schemes. It's that you - Mr. and Ms. BlackAmericaWeb.com - are being deprived of an affirming and even life-changing experience. Cuba, just 90 miles to the south of Miami, is defined and dominated by African culture and heritage. And all Cubans, even the white ones, seem to know this."
