Con esa información, la artista creó una iconografía impresionante y construyó un discurso contra la marginalidad, la frustración, el miedo, la censura, la impotencia y a favor de la búsqueda de la libertad. Es por esa cercanía y obsesión con el motivo que seguramente, la curadora de la exposición, Cristina Vives, y Katia Ayón, decidieron titularla Nkame, palabra ñáñiga, que significa salutación."

After 76 years, a return engagement for Cuba's Septeto Nacional  11/4/2009 NY Daily News: "Cuba’s Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro, a revered 83-year-old son ensemble that last played in the U.S. at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933, is making a grand return to the Bronx on Saturday. “It means a lot to go to the U.S. to make our contribution to Cuba’s traditional music,” bongo player and producer Frank (El Matador) Oropesa, who joined the Septeto 15 years ago, said from ­Havana last week. Oropesa, 49, is part of the fourth generation of musicians who have kept the Septeto going for more than 80 years, drawing on the repertoire of more than 600 themes from their founder, Cuban son master Ignacio Piñeiro, who died in 1968. “We retain the same anthological songs that became a symbol of those times, like ‘Échale Salsita,’ ‘Bardo,’ ‘Esas No Son Cubanas’ ... and we are going there to surrender all our energy for Cuban music,” Oropesa added. After Saturday’s concert at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, the seven musicians, a dancer and a sound technician will travel to San Juan, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Diego."

Cuban musicians get U.S. encore  11/3/2009 MS NBC: "Cuban diva Omara Portuondo will heat up the stage at the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards during a rare U.S. appearance this Thursday. Dubbed the queen of Cuban vocals, Portuondo will be presenting an award during the televised show and her latest CD, "Gracias," has been nominated in the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category."

El Septeto Nacional recibe visado de Washington para actuar en Nueva York  10/22/2009 Cuba Encuentro: "El Septeto Nacional, uno de los más importantes representantes de música tradicional cubana, recibió visado de Washington para actuar en Nueva York, informó la AP. "El legendario y clásico Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro presentará un concierto exclusivo en la ciudad de Nueva York", anunció en un comunicado de prensa Wally Egecombe, director del Centro de Arte y Cultura Hostos de esa ciudad estadounidense. El espectáculo se realizará el 7 de noviembre en el anfiteatro de la institución con sede en el condado del Bronx, y será el primero de músicos cubanos desde 2003, cuando Washington comenzó a negar las visas a artistas de la Isla, en el marco de una política de endurecimiento de las sanciones a Cuba."

La división de la Habana: Territorial Conflict and Cultural Hegemony in the Followers of Oyo Lukumí Religion, 1850s–1920s  10/4/2009 Cuban Studies, U of Pittsburgh: published 2003 - "The Yoruba presence in the Americas, particularly in Brazil and Cuba, has been the topic of much research in past years. The role of the individuals who molded and guided the new directions taken by these cultural manifestations, however, continues to be virgin terrain. In particular and without doubt, women were the most important contributors to these acculturative processes. The present article examines the influence of three African women and their contribution to the evolution and survival of Lukumí religion in Cuba. In so doing, it brings to the fore other important issues that cast light on the lives of Afro-Cuban women in nineteenth-century Cuba forced to live in a Eurocentric society in which they occupied the lowest rung of the ladder."

Carlos Acosta, El bueno de la película  10/3/2009 Juventud Rebelde: "«Mi relación con el cine no viene de ahora», asegura Acosta, quien recientemente acabó de rodar en la capital cubana El día de las flores. Comenzó cuando Natalie Portman me llamó, en el año 2007. Regresaba a Londres después de haber bailado en algún lugar que no recuerdo, y entraba por el aeropuerto cuando recibí su llamada por el celular. Era para decirme que tenía un proyecto y que había escrito una historia pensando en mí. Conversamos, me explicó la trama y discutimos algunas posibles fechas para el rodaje. Luego ella viajó a Inglaterra. «La película se estrenará próximamente, después de dos años de haberla filmado. Se titula New York, I love you, y está conformada por cortometrajes de cinco a siete minutos, dirigidos por varios directores. En la mía, donde hago el protagónico, solo hay 20 segundos de danza; el resto es actuación. Resulta que en el filme soy un bailarín que se ha quedado a cargo de su hija, tras el fracaso de su matrimonio. Su esposa, cansada de estar con un hombre que apenas consigue trabajar, decide abandonarlo por un banquero."

En la apertura, a la que también asistieron Abel Prieto, miembro del Buró Político y ministro de Cultura; Omar González, presidente del Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos; Herman Van Hoff, director de la Oficina Regional de Cultura de la UNESCO para el Caribe y América Latina; y José Juan Ortíz, representante en Cuba de la UNICEF, ambos artistas y figuras cívicas fueron presentadas por el director de la Muestra como Presidentes de Honor."

Cuba in Afro-Cuban Folk Dances  9/11/2009 Cuba Now: "The Folk Ballet of Trinidad and Leyenda Folk keep alive the roots of African culture dating back to the colonial period. The Folk Ballet of Trinidad has always based its spectacles on the village’s preserved traditions. Its efforts to rescue and preserve the locality’s most genuine dances and songs have been extolled by Cuban and foreign experts. Cuba is rich in dances of African origin. Brought by slaves of different ethnic groups, the dance became an essential element of national culture, through the transculturation of African and Spanish components. The Folk Ballet of Trinidad, with its 45 years of existence, corroborates that tradition. ...The dance group is formed by twenty artists, including dancers, percussionists, and singers. It has a wide Yoruba and Congo repertoire, also comprising pieces of the Cuban popular music. The group has also become a place reintegrating people into society, as it was founded with youth of improper behaviors. The Folk Ballet of Trinidad and Leyenda Folk currently preserve the roots of African culture dating back to the colonial period when slaves, having no other fun than their own dances and music, worshiped their gods."

Inaugurarán este viernes exposición antológica de Belkis Ayón  9/8/2009 Juventud Rebelde: "La primera exposición antológica de Belkis Ayón (La Habana, 1967-1999), será inaugurada este viernes, a las 6:00 p.m., en el Convento de San Francisco de Asís, y permanecerá abierta al público hasta el 28 de noviembre. Organizada por la doctora Katia Ayón con motivo del décimo aniversario del fallecimiento de la artista, la muestra lleva por título Nkame (sinónimo de elogio y salutación en la lengua de los abakuá) y cuenta con la curaduría de Cristina Vives."

Belkis Ayon Anthological Exhibition  9/4/2009 Havana Times: “Estate Belkis Ayón” (a work directed by Katia Ayón) makes available to art lovers and researchers the artist’s first anthological exhibition titled Nkame (a synonym for praise and greeting in the Abakúa language and the title of a soon to be released book). Las representaciones que hace la contemporaneidad de ciertos estereotipos raciales y culturales guardan una conexión estrecha con los tipos de imágenes popularizadas a partir de la esclavitud, y sobre ello comenta Alexis Esquivel en "Criollo Remix", su reciente muestra personal en la Galería Habana Club del Museo del Ron. Su propuesta mixtura lo “colonial” y lo “postcolonial” en un discurso inteligente, que echa manos al humor característico del cubano. De esta misma forma la entrega de la Mpaka que usualmente se hace el último día del festival tuvo su traspaso de poderes una jornada antes. Con el objetivo de la asistencia plena de los participantes en el próximo Festival, el ritual se realizó en fecha anticipada. After Cuba’s abolition of slavery in 1886 and the resulting migration of former slaves to urban areas in search of work, Tumba Francesa societies emerged in several cities."

Vol. 1-8, y otra, Nuestra canción. Martha Valdés y Sergio Vitier. El primero de estos fonogramas fue producido por María Elena Mendiola, Licenciada en música, directora de orquesta e investigadora, quien fuera especialista de la casa discográfica cubana EGREM durante más de una década. From June 3-9, this event will have its venue in the city of Santiago de Cuba, and share venues in Guantanamo and Granma provinces, where the guest country will be honored and its artists and intellectuals will entertain the Cuban people with Hunduran art and writing."

Dedicado a la cantante cubana Guadalupe Victoria, artísticamente conocida como La Lupe, el encuentro reunirá a cultivadores y estudiosos de esa expresión musical, la cual tomó fuerza en la segunda mitad del siglo XX en voces de cantores santiagueros."

SERÁ INAUGURADO MUSEO CUBANO DEDICADO A LA ESCLAVITUD  6/14/2009 Radio Reloj: "El museo cubano Por la Ruta del Esclavo, instalado en el Castillo de San Severino, en Matanzas, a unos 100 kilómetros de La Habana, será inaugurado el próximo martes con la presencia de Olabiyi Babalola Joseph Yai, presidente del Consejo Ejecutivo de la UNESCO."

Artistic director Santiago Alfonso spoke at the farewell: "Papin, this is not the performance we expected from you, but we will always love you, and today we want to tell you that you will remain in the eternal glory that you deserve. We give to you the only thing we can and want to give: our applause." Floral wreaths sent by Cuban President Raul Castro and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro were placed on his tomb at the Colon Cemetery in Havana. Also present were Minister of Culture Abel Prieto, President of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists Miguel Barnet, Ricardo Abreu’s brothers Luis and Jesus, and other relatives and friends. Papin passed away at age 75 in Havana from a stroke."

Artist's work lets Cubans speak out in Havana for freedom  3/31/2009 Miami Herald: " A packed performance art show at the 10th Havana Biennial, a prestigious international festival, turned into a clamor of ''Libertad!'' as Cubans and others took to a podium to protest the lack of freedom of expression on the island. The provocative performance Sunday night, recorded and posted Monday on YouTube, was staged by acclaimed Cuban artist Tania Bruguera, a frequent visitor to Art Basel Miami Beach who lives in Havana. Bruguera set up a podium with a microphone in front of a red curtain at the Wifredo Lam Center, an official art exhibition space and biennial venue. Two actors clad in the military fatigue uniforms of the Ministry of the Interior, the agency charged with spying on Cubans' activities, flanked the podium and carried a white dove. Bruguera let people from the standing-room only audience come to the microphone for no more than one minute. As people spoke, the white dove was placed on their shoulders by the actors. ''Let's stop waiting for permission to use the Internet,'' urged Yoani Sánchez, who has written a controversial award-winning ''Generación Y'' blog chronicling Cuban life under constant threats from the government. ''Libertad! Libertad!'' shouted one man. ''Too many years of covering the sun with one finger,'' said another. To every call for freedom, the audience responded with shouts of ``Bravo!'' The performance appeared to mock a historic Jan. 8, 1959, victory speech by Fidel Castro at which a white dove landed on his shoulder, viewed by many as a sign of divine recognition."

He was always there at the rumbas in their solar, they were like family to him. Guillermo was inspired to begin singing rumba by hearing Carlos Embale's older brother, Luis. He would sing with a group called Estrellas Amalianas, along with Lazaro Suazo, Roberto Carillo (a nephew of Tio Tom), and Chino "Mala Noche," now all passed away… El Negro has enjoyed a long and varied career. In 1965 he joined Pello El Afrokán's Mozambique group and later joined Luis "Aspirina" Chacón Medivel's group Sicamarié. He also worked with Lacho Rivero in carnavales, and even worked as a music therapist in a psychiatric hospital. In 1970 he began working with Carlos Embale, playing tumbador on the LP "Conjunto Guaguancó Carlos Embale." Later he began working with the great Coro Folklórico Nacional, (initally formed by Ignacio Piñeiro), with whom he continues today."

He later recorded for the Cuban label EGREM, and his songs were performed and recorded by numerous Cuban artists, including Omara Portuondo, Elena Burke, Frank Emilio Flynn and Pablo Milanes. However, many of his pieces might have been lost had it not been for the work of his young protégé, Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas."

Orbeín: Back to His Roots  12/1/2008 Wynwood Art Magazine: "Through his work, José Orbeín attempts to vindicate the figure of the Abakuá, discredited within Cuban society because of a collection of stories, most of them false, which associate its members with criminal acts. For this reason, the artist takes elements from the sect’s beliefs and rituals, in order to capture aspects of current reality and to exalt the values of the rigorous codes of ethics and conduct that govern the group. Although the Abakuá theme has always been present, it is only in the last eight years that its presence has been made almost constant in the works of this artist. Orbeín began painting intuitively. This aptitude was encouraged by his maternal grandmother, who lacking the resources to provide him with materials, gave him cardboard and craft paper, so that he could paint on them with charcoal or anything else he might find; elements that the author has taken up again in many of his recent works. Orbeín confesses that it was painting that saved him from a difficult childhood and an adolescence marked by delinquency and marginality. He did not study arts formally; instead, he had possibly the best of all masters, the Cuban painter, Humberto Peña. Friendship with this creator provided him with theoretical training and a solid upbringing."

Papa Wendo - Influential Congolese musician who was both lionised and jailed by politicians  8/1/2008 Guardian: "Now known as Wendo, and then Papa Wendo, he recorded his first massive hit, Marie-Louise, in 1948. A light, charming and lilting song, it became so popular that it was credited with magical powers, with devotees claiming that it could heal the sick and raise the dead - to the concern of the church and the Belgian authorities, who had him arrested. It turned out to be a good career move, for Wendo commented later that "when I got out of prison, that song Marie-Louise became even more popular". Wendo, and the artists he inspired, produced new popular music that cut right across the Congo's complex ethnic barriers by mixing local traditional songs with the styles developed by African slaves who had been transported to Cuba. This new Congolese style, rumba, would provide the soundtrack for that brief, hopeful, era in Congolese history, as the country moved towards independence in the late 1950s. Though never actively involved in politics, Wendo was a close friend of Patrice Lumumba, the radical politician who became the Congo's first prime minister in June 1960. Wendo insisted that Lumumba would come to listen to his songs, not to discuss politics."

Ministers and artists from a dozen African nations will travel in Havana for that purpose. Ethnologists like Cuban Rogelio Martinez Fure, honorable president of Cubadisco, believe that the Cuban people do not know Africa as it really is, but instead are familiar with an imagined Africa fabricated by colonizers in the course of time. Just to cite three landmarks: In 1880, the book Follas Novas, by Rosalía de Castro, considered one of the foundational works in the Galician language literary renaissance, was published here; the Galician national anthem was first sung here and in 1906, also in Cuba, the Royal Galician Academy was created. Now, thanks to the space offered by the fair, Galicia has arrived with a huge cultural delegation of more than 200 members, among them 50 writers of various generations, tendencies and genres, highlighting the reality of a living literature within this Spanish autonomous community." By rekindling old memories of her, the symposium made the point of revisiting her unique talent to grasp, document and, above all, question, the Cuban reality of the 60s, at a time when the whole country was embracing a new social model, while still struggling with old racial and gender prejudices. The validity of Gomez´s cinematic approach for Cuba – and the world at large- today may be an essential outcome of the colloquium. In the 60s many of her chronological peers might had failed to understand that, through her incisive documentaries, Sara Gomez was speaking volumes when she delved into the logical contradictions between desire and reality, change and tradition, slogans and daily life. Oddly enough, however, her films did not made a splash among the filmmaking community of the time, but rather left their lasting imprint in the ranks of playwrights, according to an old friend and former colleague of Sara Gomez’s. Writer Inés María Martiatu recalled during the meeting how De cierta manera opened the doors of Cuban theatres to pieces that also dealt with topics such as social exclusion, male chauvinism and racism, such as Andoba, by the late Alberto Pedro."

Colibrí This exhibition by Choco —his first one-man show in that country— is something of a “preview,” because in September 2008, a series of Cuban cultural events will take place in this capital, including music, film, ballet and visual arts exhibitions. Michael Chambers, owner of the above-mentioned gallery, recently traveled to Havana and visited the Taller del Sol workshop, named after the street where it is located, and where Choco currently works. There, acting as curator, he chose about 50 works of art, most of which are larger than four square meters, and which are oil on cloth, colagraphy and mixed media. According to the artist, he is satisfied with his selection and believes that it is a “very interesting exhibition for British eyes.” All of the pieces were made during the last three years, after his one-man show in the National Museum of Fine Arts (2004), titled Abanico de posibilidades (Range of Possibilities), an important moment in his creative activities, a profound look back, given the degree of maturity and the solidness of his creations. Afro-Cuba Music Anthology Released  7/7/2007 Prensa Latina: "The most complete anthology of Afro Cuban music was launched today by the Musical Recordings and Editions institution (EGREM). During the event in the Africa House in Old Havana, considered Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, musicologist Olavo Alen described the collection of 10 CDs of the best players of the genre. The recordings include ancient Afro-Cuban songs, Oru de Igbodu, Iyesa, arara, tambor yuca, bembe, tumba francesa, toque de guiros, congos and Abakua. Olavo Alen explained that the purpose of the project was to rescue music previously recorded in Guantanamo, center of this musical form. Musicologist Maria Teresa Linares described the collection as "unprecedented" due to its testimonial value and recalled that it was also homage to the deceased well-known researchers and musicians, such as Fernando Ortiz and Argeliers Leon."

At the same time, it is also the very same anniversary of the classic African-Cuban jazz piece "Manteca", the creation of Chano Pozo with the collaboration of Gillespie… "The system of looting was simple. In Havana, there were certain stores that sold musical scores with arrangements for bands for the sum of one dollar. Many musicians in the United States sent their representatives to Cuba in order to procure these scores written by local musicians. After having mastered the tunes, they recorded them and added them to their repertoire without bothering to inform the authors. A musician as well-known as Chico O’Farrill from Cuba, from his arrival in New York in 1948, had to bring several lawsuits against a musician who was no less famous for not respecting his rights. Now, the U.S. economic blockade of Cuba makes it exceptionally difficult for Cuban musicians to go the United States and has allowed this traffic to develop with total impunity. A curious irony when U.S. zeal in protecting its own artists’ copyrights from the rest of the world is well known!" "Manteca" imposed a Cuban style on New York, adopting the rhythmic patrons of the Cuban tumbadora in the be-bop style – a creation by dizzy Gillespie, in union with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. Dizzy very much enjoyed music from other parts of the world, especially Cuba. The trumpeter combined African-Cuban dance rhythms with elements of be-bop and traditional jazz improvisation and created a new kind of dance music, which he baptized "Cubop"."

Cuban musician Richard Egües dies  9/1/2006 Granma: "CUBAN musician Richard Egües, one of the most important artistic figures on the island and a former member of the Orquesta Aragón band, died today, September 1, at the age of 82 after a long illness. Egües, a pianist, flutist, composer and arranger, was born in the city of Santa Clara in central Cuba on October 26, 1924. He studied with his father, joined the municipal band of his hometown and trained in various bands before joining Orquesta Aragón in 1953. From the time he joined, the musician gave the band its unmistakable style with the way he played the flute."
