John Dimitri Negroponte  1/22/2006 Celerino Castillo: "From 1985 to 1991, I was assigned to Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador. As one of two DEA agents that covered those countries, I observed that our U.S. government was complicit in drug trafficking and human rights violations. The area was rife with rebellion, gunrunning, and a perception that communism was on the move towards our back yards. One of my job descriptions was to train members of their military intelligence on interdiction of drug enforcement. However, most of my time was spent assisting the CIA in training the death squads. We were utilizing CIA contract agents from different parts of South America, specifically Venezuela and Argentina. In reality, Central America became one huge country, which allowed the death squads to over flow into each other. Mario Sandoval-Alarcon, best know as the godfather of the death squads and creator of the notorious death squad, ?La Mano Blanca? ran all death squads. Sandoval was so loved by Ronald Reagan, that he got a private invitation and attended Reagan's inauguration."

topFighting the Theft of New Orleans: the Rhytm of Resistance  1/21/2006 Black Commentator: "Mayor Ray Nagin's commission has presented residents of flood-battered, mostly African American neighborhoods with a Catch-22, carefully crafted to preclude New Orleans from ever again becoming the more than two-thirds Black city it was before Hurricane Katrina breached the levees. Authored by Nagin crony, real estate development mogul and George Bush fundraiser Joseph Canizaro, the plan would impose a four-month moratorium on building in devastated neighborhoods like the lower Ninth Ward and New Orleans East. During that period, the neighborhoods would be required to come up with a plan to show how they would become "viable" by reaching an undefined "critical mass" of residents. But the moratorium, itself, discourages people from rebuilding their neighborhoods - just as it is intended to do - thus creating a fait accompli: residents will be hard pressed to prove that a "critical mass" of habitation can be achieved. "It's circular reasoning," said the AALP's Sanyika. They talk about "some level of neighborhood viability, but no one knows what that means. What constitutes viable plans? What kinds of neighborhoods are viable? Everywhere you turn people are trying to rebuild, but there is this constraint." The commission is empowered only to make recommendations, but with the help of corporate media, pretends their plan is set in stone. "They keep pushing their recommendations as though they are the gospel truth," said Sanyika, who along with tens of thousands of other evacuees has been dispersed to Houston, five hours away. "There is confusion as to all of these recommendations, issued as if they are policy. The Times-Picayune contributes to that confusion. None of this is a given." Activists believe the way to play this situation is for residents to forge ahead on their own. "Trying to figure out the logic of that illogical proposal is a wasted effort - all you're going to do is wind up going in circles," said Sanyika. He emphasizes that the commission's recommendations are not binding on anyone - certainly not on the majority Black city council, which claims authority in city planning matters. They're not buying the nonsense. "The city council has rejected it. Nagin says ‘ignore it.' I think it's dead in the water," said Sanyika."

Calls linked to Boulis slaying  1/21/2006 Miami Herald: "Nicholson testified that Fiorillo admitted to shooting Boulis. Moscatiello, after his September arrest, told investigators that Fiorillo and Ferrari admitted their involvement. Moscatiello also claimed that Ferrari told him Kidan ordered the hit. Kidan has never been named as a suspect."

Jack Abramoff's past as a South African spy  1/21/2006 Wayne Madsen Report: [scroll down to Jan 21, 2006] "rding to South African intelligence sources, convicted GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff was a long-time intelligence asset for South Africa's apartheid era security services. The revelations from South Africa help to explain Abramoff's connections to white supremacists who use Confederate heritage organizations to mask their true agendas (see article directly below). In 1985, Abramoff launched the International Freedom Foundation (IFF) in Washington. In fact, IFF was a front for South African military intelligence, code named Pacman, and a major front for South Africa's international propaganda efforts. The IFF was a joint project of Russel Crystal, currently a Democratic Alliance official in South Africa, and a former apartheid South Africa top spy, Craig Williamson. According to South African intelligence sources, Abramoff was first recruited by Crystal and Williamson during 1979 and 1980. Crystal and Williamson were both paid agents of the Apartheid Security Police (SAP (V)). Money paid to Abramoff initially came from SAP(V) accounts."

topThe Imperium's Quarter Century  1/20/2006 Consortium News: "What’s now known about the Iranian hostage crisis suggests that the “coincidence” of the Reagan Inauguration and the Hostage Release was not a case of frightened Iranians cowering before a U.S. President who might just nuke Tehran. The preponderance of evidence suggests that it was a prearranged deal between the Republicans and the Iranians. The Republicans got the hostages and the political bounce; Iran’s Islamic fundamentalists got a secret supply of weapons and various other payoffs."

Globetrotters  1/20/2006 The Stakeholder: "US government investigators probing Washington's explosive Congressional bribery scandal centered on disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff recently visited Hong Kong, according to a witness interviewed by the authorities. The investigators reportedly are chasing convoluted money trails leading to Abramoff and government officials he sought to influence."

topDoubt cast on AP story's claim of “No Wrongdoing” in DEA corruption scandal  1/17/2006 NarcoNews: "Although the AP story headline seems to imply that the corruption charges are a dead issue, at least one former high-ranking DEA official contends the allegations are, in fact, very credible. In addition, representatives of the two watchdog agencies charged with investigating the corruption, to date, don’t seem to have their stories straight about the status of their investigations, based on comments made to Narco News. Narco News published its exclusive story on Jan. 9 based on a leaked memo drafted by Department of Justice attorney Thomas M. Kent. In the memo, Kent alleges that DEA agents in Bogotá assisted narco-traffickers, engaged in money laundering, and conspired to murder informants."

topBolivia strongly rejects Chávez' remarks  1/12/2006 El Universal: "President Hugo Chávez' remarks on an alleged plot against the administration of Bolivian president-elect Evo Morales were strongly rejected in Bolivia by incumbent President Eduardo Rodríguez, the Army commander and several media… "As government representatives, we could meet with Hugo Chávez or George W. Bush. We are open to dialogue. But in the case of the United States, first they have to explain the accusations they made that I am a 'narco-terrorist', a member of the 'coca mafia' and a 'drug trafficker'," Morales said."

US anger at 'cultural insensitivity' claim by British officer  1/12/2006 Evening Echo, Ireland: "The 14-page article by Brigadier Nigel Aylwin-Foster was published in the latest issue of the US military magazine, Military Review. In it, Aylwin-Foster, who served as deputy commander of a British programme to train the Iraqi military, praised American military leaders for showing flexibility in moving troops from combat to reconstruction efforts in Baghdad. But Aylwin-Foster, who four months in 2004 shared offices with Lt Gen David Petraeus, commander of the Iraqi training programmes, said the Army “seemed weighed down by bureaucracy, a stiflingly hierarchal outlook a predisposition to offensive operations, and a sense of duty that required all issues to be confronted head on”. He said US officers displayed “cultural insensitivity” that bordered on racism toward Iraqis, and that the decision to disband the Iraqi army alienated segments of the population that could have eased the transition and quashed the uprising. Petraeus, who now commands Fort Leavenworth, was unavailable for comment last night, an Army spokeswoman said. But, in a knee-jerk reaction, Col Kevin Benson, the director of the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, was quoted by The Washington Post as calling Aylwin-Foster “an insufferable British snob”."

US army in Iraq institutionally racist, claims British officer  1/12/2006 Guardian, UK: "A senior British officer has criticised the US army for its conduct in Iraq, accusing it of institutional racism, moral righteousness, misplaced optimism, and of being ill-suited to engage in counter-insurgency operations. The blistering critique, by Brigadier Nigel Aylwin-Foster, who was the second most senior officer responsible for training Iraqi security forces, reflects criticism and frustration voiced by British commanders of American military tactics. What is startling is the severity of his comments - and the decision by Military Review, a US army magazine, to publish them. American soldiers, says Brig Aylwin-Foster, were "almost unfailingly courteous and considerate". But he says "at times their cultural insensitivity, almost certainly inadvertent, arguably amounted to institutional racism". The US army, he says, is imbued with an unparalleled sense of patriotism, duty, passion and talent. "Yet it seemed weighed down by bureaucracy, a stiflingly hierarchical outlook, a predisposition to offensive operations and a sense that duty required all issues to be confronted head-on." Brig Aylwin-Foster says the American army's laudable "can-do" approach paradoxically led to another trait, namely "damaging optimism". Such an ethos, he says, "is unhelpful if it discourages junior commanders from reporting unwelcome news up the chain of command"."

Changing the Army for Counterinsurgency by Brigadier Nigel Aylwin-Foster, British Army Operations  1/12/2006 Military Review, US Army: deeply critical of US Army strategy and behavior in Iraq

'I'm a door kicker-inner,' one young Marine blurted out - to the dismay of his superiors  1/12/2006 Times, UK: "Long before the Abu Ghraib scandal, there were numerous examples of brutality and insensitivity by US troops to match tales of their courage. Sometimes it was purely a lack of local knowledge: a minor riot ensued when dogs — considered unclean in the Muslim world — were used to sniff staff entering the Oil Ministry. At other times it was the crudeness of combat troops thrown abruptly into a peacekeeping role. “I don’t know how many women I’ve seen in labour. These people s*** out kids like turds,” a National Guardsman muttered to The Times on a patrol in Baghdad. That contempt was quickly detected by the population, which was dismayed to see US forces obsessed with their own protection and doing little to halt the breakdown of law and order. Much of the damage was done early on. Battle-hardened troops launched house raids that horrified Iraqis, who jealously guard their privacy and the modesty of their women. Doors were kicked in. Money and valuables were reported stolen."

Yahoo Kills Countersurveillance Mail List  1/11/2006 Cryptome: "On January 10, 2006, Yahoo killed my TSCM-L mailing list, and they are playing games with me about it. The last time this happened was during the DNC when I posted details to the list about the really appalling bad security that was being implemented during the DNC, and numerous government employees and contractors applied pressure to Yahoo and they pulled the list.. Eventually they reactivated the list (after the DNC), but pulled it down during the RNC a few months later only a restore it a couple of days later. You will recall that the government applied pressure to you about the DNC (in)Security report and that you were able to determine that a government contractor was behind the attempt to censor the data and squelch me. The curious thing is that on January 5, 2006, I had uploaded a series file into a folder on the files section of my TSCM-L list titled bugs02a.icf, bugs02b, etc.. which I suspect really upset some government types. The files contained detailed programming instructions and data files that would be used to command an inexpensive Icom scanner or receiver to hunt down bugs. Each file contained roughly 900 to 1000 bug frequencies, and the technical parameters of various bug bands which would allow a victim of eavesdropping to purchase a scanner for a couple of hundred bugs and detect and locate the majority of illegal bugs, government bugs, spyshop bugs, and bugs used by intelligence agencies worldwide. In the file I included the frequencies of FBI bugs, DHS bugs, military bugs, CIA bugs, MI5 bugs, RCMP, and related agencies plus the "house frequencies" of all the major manufacturers of eavesdropping devices. These files would give someone who is hunting for bugs an enormous advantage over an eavesdropper. Early this morning several people sent me Email that they had tried to download the file, but that it was missing from the file area and that the folder in which it was located had also been quietly deleted... then a few hours later Yahoo quietly deleted the group altogether."

HOW ABRAMOFF FUNDED THE ANTI-GAY AGENDA  1/11/2006 Doug Ireland: "Abramoff did more than hire anti-gay luminaries as Rev. Lou Sheldon (head of the Traditional Values Coalition) and Ralph Reed (former head of the Christian Coalition) with money from Abramoff’s clients and front groups to lobby for special interests. Abramoff also funded an anti-gay group close to the lobbyist’s best buddy and biggest water-carrier, Rep. Tom Delay (right) -- the U.S. Family Network -- with laundered money that has been traced to Russian oil interests."

The Impeachment of George W. Bush  1/11/2006 The Nation: "Finally, it has started. People have begun to speak of impeaching President George W. Bush--not in hushed whispers but openly, in newspapers, on the Internet, in ordinary conversations and even in Congress. As a former member of Congress who sat on the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon, I believe they are right to do so."

topThe Soon-to-be-Indicted Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio's Connection To Electoral Fraud  1/10/2006 Brad Blog: "There's been a great deal of speculation over the last several days, particularly in the light of Jack Abramoff's recent guilty pleas, concerning the connection of Congressman Bob Ney (R-OH) to Election Fraud in Ohio, vis a vis his stewardship and authoring of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) back in 2001 and 2002. The heavy-handed tactics he has taken since, in order to keep the flawed act from being changed in any way over the years, along with going to great lengths to keep the nation's eyes off of massive electile dysfunction in Ohio and elsewhere since 2004, may finally get the attention it all properly deserves. Both Abramoff and his partner Michael Scanlon have directly informed prosecutors of Ney's alleged wrong-doing in regard to money and gifts given to Ney in apparent exchange for support on various legislation and even personal business deals. Ney, who chairs the important U.S. House Administration Committee, has been fingered, and now subpoenaed, for accepting illegal trips, gratuities and other apparent quid pro quo deals with Abramoff's former firms, partners, friends and groups who had paid both him and Scanlon as lobbyists. His direct connection to the HAVA Election Reform bill passed in the wake of the 2000 Florida Election Debacle, and his various extraordinary efforts to specifically block amendments to the bill and to smokescreen attempted investigations into his home state's conduct during the 2004 Election Debacle, has been less widely reported. Until now. While Common Cause quietly reported in December of 2004 that Diebold -- the much-beleagured-of-late American Voting Machine company -- paid as much as $275,000 to Abramoff's firm, Greenberg Traurig for lobbying work, The BRAD BLOG has now found additional details that begin to shed new light on Ney's personal connections to Diebold lobbyists. Such personal connections include those with Ney's former chief of staff turned lobbyist, David DiStefano, who has been working on behalf of Diebold, Inc. and at least one other Voting Machine Company as a registered lobbyist in the House going back to at least 2001. One of DiStefano's online bios crows about his having "an insider’s edge to hard-to-reach political officials." That "insider's edge" has proven to have been a very worthwhile investment for the Voting Machine Companies who'd purchased access into Ney's political office. Congressional lobbying records reveal that Diebold, Inc. has paid at least $180,000 to DiStefano and eventually his partner, Roy C. Coffee, to lobby for the "Help America Vote Act" and other "Election Reform Issues" in Congress since 2003. Another Electronic Voting Machine Company, AccuPoll, Inc., also paid DiStefano some $70,000 to lobby for HAVA on their behalf in 2002, although that relationship was apparently terminated once the legislation was passed by Congress. The connections of DiStefano and Coffee don't stop at Congress, however. Both lobbyists now work out of the new Washington office of the Texas-based law firm of Lock, Liddell & Sapp LLP -- the firm of George W. Bush's White House Counsel Harriet Miers. And Coffee, himself, had previously worked as a senior aide to then-Governor Bush back in Texas."
