Chavez: Assassination of Venezuelans Will Not Go Unpunished 9/19/2004 Prensa Latina
Strains Felt By Guard Unit on Eve Of War Duty 9/19/2004 Washington Post: ""Our morale isn't high enough for us to be away for 18 months," said Pfc. Joshua Garman, 20, who, in civilian life, works in a National Guard recruiting office. "I think a lot of guys will break down in Iraq." Asked if he is happy that he volunteered for the deployment, Garman said, "Negative. No time off? I definitely would not have volunteered."
A series of high-level decisions at the Pentagon has come together to make life tough for soldiers and commanders in this battalion and others. The decisions include the Bush administration's reluctance to sharply increase the size of the U.S. Army. Instead, the Pentagon is relying on the National Guard and Reserves, which provide 40 percent of the 140,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. Also, the top brass has concluded that more military police are needed as security deteriorates and the violent insurgency flares in ways that were not predicted by Pentagon planners."

Turkey snaps over US bombing of its bretheren 9/18/2004 Asia Times: ""I told [US Secretary of State Colin Powell] that what is being done there is harming the civilian population, that it is wrong, and that if it continues, Turkey's cooperation on issues regarding Iraq will come to a total stop." He added, "We will continue to say these things. Of course we will not stop only at words. If necessary, we will not hesitate to do what has to be done." ...The US attacks on Tal Afar, which Iraqi Turkmen groups in Turkey say have left 120 dead and over 200 injured, were launched, the US says, to root out terrorists. The US has denied the extent of the damage, saying that it avoided civilian targets and killed only terrorists it says were infiltrating the town from Syria… And Turkey has also moved away from long-time friend Israel, the US's umbilically aligned strategic partner in the Middle East. Turkey has accused Israel of "state terrorism" against Palestinians. A recent ruling party team from Turkey returned from Tel Aviv not satisfied with Israeli explanations over charges that it was interfering in northern Iraqi affairs."
Gani Adams Wants Shrines In Yorubaland As Tourist Centres 9/18/2004 Guardian News, Nigeria: "A CALL has been made by the factional leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) Gani Adams on the federal government to explore the existence of some shrines in Yorubaland with a view to turning them into tourist centres.
Speaking at a pre-event press briefing organised by the group to mark its Olokun festival holding next month.
Adams said: "Some shrines in Yorubaland are used for fraud, it is not only Okija shrines that should be raided, shrines in Yorubaland should be raided also.
He continued: "I do not believe in anything that has hidden agenda, this is to let those who think that OPC is a militant and fetish organisation know that the tale is not true."
Adams said his group, has jettisoned tribal discrimination and militancy to embrace peace which the planned festival stands for.
He added that this year's edition of Olokun Festival billed to hold at Suntan Beach in Badagry outskirts of Lagos has received financial support from the Lagos and Ogun states government.
According to the OPC leader: "Before we began Olokun festival three years ago, our participation in the annual Osun-Osogbo festival had not only shown our desire and capabilities for cultural re-orientation of the Yoruba, it also added colour to the festival." "
More on 9/11 Report: Who Paid the Hijackers? Al-Hawsawi? Mahmoud Ahmad? 9/18/2004 Peter Dale Scott: "Instead, following a previous reversal in the US media, the financial role attributed earlier to Sheikh Saeed is now given to "Mustafa al Hawsawi," the name (or pseudonym) used for the financial transactions. The Report treats Shaikh Saeed and al-Hawsawi as two people, whereas earlier they had been identified as the same.[10]
In this way the Report fails to confront the extent to which al-Qaeda may have been a by-product of past US covert operations in Afghanistan with the Pakistani ISI. This would mean that the CIA, far from being too weak, has engaged in reckless covert adventures abroad that were out of its competence and depth."

Sides Ready For Nader's Ballot Battle 9/17/2004 Tampa Tribune: "Representing Nader in Florida is Kenneth Sukhia, a George W. Bush lawyer during 2000 who was later nominated by the president for a federal judgeship.
Hood, a Republican appointed by the governor, is being represented by George Meros, who has represented the GOP on legislative issues.
Hood, who oversees the state elections division, certified Nader for the ballot and appealed a lower court ruling removing him, which allowed her to order him back on.
That doesn't mean she's taking sides, the governor maintained. ``Obviously there are partisan motives here, but that's not my concern nor Secretary Hood's concern,'' he said.
Florida Democratic Party Chairman Scott Maddox called that assessment ``heifer dust.'' "

Taliban operating in Iraq, Taylor says 9/16/2004 CBC: ""The Americans have no idea what kind of an anthill they're sitting on" he told CBC Newsworld. Taylor based his conclusions on observations he made after being kidnapped in Iraq on Sept. 7 and released five days later, near Mosul in northern Iraq. He said he was put in a taxi to Turkey.
He said he was handed from group to group that shared hostages and weapons, including one he called the Taliban, the militants who controlled Afghanistan until the U.S. drove them out.
He said the groups operated "with the full co-operation of the police." "
Far graver than Vietnam 9/16/2004 Guardian: "Most senior US military officers now believe the war on Iraq has turned into a disaster on an unprecedented scale."
Anti-Arab Propaganda Under Fire 9/16/2004 indyBay: "The U.S.-lead allegation that the present crisis in the black African nation of Sudan involves “genocide” was uniformly rejected by an all-black panel discussion cablecast Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, on C-Span. Characterizing the conflict in Sudan as a “civil war”, Akbar Muhammad, a spokesman for the Nation of Islam, asserted that the “complex...humanitarian conflict” is “not about race”. All the panelists agreed on this central point.
“It is not genocide, nor is it ethnic cleansing”, said black activist Imam Khalid Abdul-Fattah Griggs. The “humanitarian crisis” is real, but he says the war is about “unequal distribution of resources”. "
President Chavez and the referendum By James Petras 9/16/2004 Progreso Weekly
The mother of all coverups 9/16/2004 Salon: "But there is one sanctuary where the Warren Report is still stubbornly upheld and where its manifold critics can expect their own rough treatment: in the towers of the media elite… One of the great ironies of history is that while the media elite was busily trying to shore up public confidence in the Warren Report, the political elites were privately confiding among themselves that the report was a travesty, a fairy tale for mass consumption. Presidents, White House aides, intelligence officials, senators, congressmen, even foreign leaders -- they all muttered darkly among themselves that Kennedy was killed by a conspiracy, a plot that a number of them suspected had roots in the U.S. government itself. (In truth, some high media dignitaries have also quietly shared their doubts about the official version. In 1993, CBS anchorman Dan Rather, who did much along with his network to enforce the party line on Dallas, confessed to Robert Tannenbaum, the former deputy chief counsel of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, "We really blew it on the Kennedy assassination.")
