Punch cards may hurt blacks 10/17/2004 Columbus Dispatch, OH: "In areas with the highest population of blacks, the rate of ballots with no votes counted for president was about 5 percent, the analysis shows. For the rest of Ohio precincts it was less than 2 percent.
The disparity is even more glaring if you hone in on the parts of Ohio that had the highest 10 percent of uncounted ballots. The odds of a predominantly white precinct making that list were 2 out of 33. But for predominantly black precincts, it was 2 out of 3."
Army's desert OPFOR on the way to Iraq - Deployment of elite training regiment could have bad long-term implications for the Army 10/17/2004 Intel Dump: "...deploying the OPFOR is like eating your seed corn. This unit is responsible for training other units and raising their level of expertise and combat readiness. The 11th ACR is being replaced by a National Guard unit. That's like replacing the Dodgers with a high school baseball team. Sure, they can both play baseball and wear the uniform — but one is a whole lot more proficient and experienced at its job. The OPFOR has a reputation as a tough enemy, and that's a good thing because it forces units training at the NTC to become better themselves. By replacing this unit with National Guard troops, the Army has hurt its ability to produce good units for Iraq in the future."

Kerry Attacker Protected Rev. Moon 10/15/2004 Consortium News: "Carlton Sherwood, who has produced an anti-John Kerry video that will be aired across the United States before the Nov. 2 elections, wrote a book in the 1980s denouncing federal investigators who tried to crack down on Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s illicit financial operations."

Will U.S. Elections Pass the 'Global Test'? 10/15/2004 GOP USA: "Next month, the United States will have the distinction of having joined the elite club of countries like Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka whose elections are scrutinized and critiqued by international election monitors. It is a national disgrace that is openly advocated by leftist activists and a group of congressional Democrats."
U.S. Congress alert on electoral fraud 10/15/2004 Granma: "A report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released yesterday, stated that the Justice Department has not established procedures to document electoral irregularities or voter intimidation."
Block the Vote - By Paul Krugman 10/15/2004 NYT: "And officials appear to be doing their best to make voting difficult for those blacks who do manage to register. Florida law requires local election officials to provide polling places where voters can cast early ballots. Duval County is providing only one such location, when other counties with similar voting populations are providing multiple sites. And in Duval and other counties the early voting sites are miles away from precincts with black majorities."
Florida National Guard troops may deploy at airport terminals statewide again 10/15/2004 Sun Sentinel, FL
Terror Threat Complicates Election Plans in Region 10/15/2004 Washington Post: "Civil liberties groups and minority organizations across the nation have also expressed concern that a higher police presence at voting places could stifle turnout.
In 2000, black voters in Florida complained that police checkpoints scared some from casting ballots in the very close election. The charges brought back echoes from the nation's civil rights history, when government power was used throughout the South to turn away black voters.
"There's no question that if you were to put police officers and sheriff's deputies at the polling places, it would have an intimidating effect," said Laughlin McDonald, director of the American Civil Liberties Union voting rights project. "There are thousands of precincts around the United States. We can't make them armed guardhouses." ...In Fairfax, officials say they have implemented a secure instant message system that can broadcast text messages to thousands of pagers and cell phones. Poll workers who do not have personal cell phones will be given one, county officials said, and workers at polling places where cellular signals are weak will be given pagers.
State election officials in Virginia and Maryland said they will have the capability to move personnel and data to backup locations if their offices are unusable."

Florida: Bus Tour to Encourage Blacks to Vote 10/14/2004 AP: "Democrats say there has been an effort to discourage blacks from voting, and they've planned a four-day bus tour across Florida to encourage black voting and assure people that they're fighting to eliminate problems at the polls."

set for a new fiasco 10/14/2004 NY Daily News: "On Tuesday, a routine test of a small portion of Palm Beach County's new electronic touch screen voting machines - the ones that replaced the old punch card system - had to be canceled when the computer system crashed. They'll try a new test tomorrow.
And this week, a group of labor unions and civic groups filed a federal voting rights lawsuit. It charges Jeb Bush's handpicked secretary of state, Glenda Hood, and other election officials with illegally rejecting new voter registration applications from thousands of black and Hispanic voters."
Burglars left plenty in political break-in - Most loot untouched at Democratic office 10/14/2004 Toledo Blaze: "One of the computers belonged to office manager Barbara Koonce, who was responsible for names and addresses of hundreds of party members, volunteers, and candidates, a master schedule for all candidates' events, and financial information.
It also included a list of registered Democrats - information that had been analyzed as part of the Democrats' campaign strategy, Ms. Koonce said.
"So for example, if I wanted to target African-American voters in Ward 10 now, I no longer have that list," she said."

Palestine: Of settler crimes and media silence 10/13/2004 Al Jazeera: "Unable to walk since a vicious attack on 29 September by Jewish colonists, she says physical assaults on schoolchildren and the volunteers who escort them have all increased in the past two weeks… "Dozens of volunteers from Amnesty International, CPT, Operation Dove, as well as numerous parents, and of course Palestinian schoolchildren, have all been assaulted this week alone.

Indymedia Seizure Hits Two Nations 10/13/2004 AntiWar: "Federal prosecutors in both Switzerland and Italy have confirmed they are investigating Indymedia, and the Italian prosecutor reportedly said there are suspicions the network may "support terrorism," says Indymedia.
A representative for the network in the United States said the group still has received no official explanation for the shutdown. "But apparently this morning the Swiss said they had never asked the FBI to seize the servers, just that they were looking at the photos [of undercover police]," David Meieran of Indymedia Pittsburgh told IPS."

Their own private Florida 10/12/2004 Talking Points: "Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.
Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.
The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at democrats. Thee focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.
The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations."

Howard's double win cheers war leaders 10/11/2004 Independent, UK: "An Australian government is close to having complete legislative control for the first time in more than two decades today, after voters delivered a positive verdict on John Howard's support for the war in Iraq. The result means that troops from Australia, a leading member of George Bush's "coalition of the willing", will remain in Iraq for the foreseeable future."
