A defeat for voters' rights 1/9/2005 Boston Globe: "Ironically, despite their attempts at a revote in Washington, Republicans framed the contest as a conspiracy theory interfering with the business of Congress. Furthermore, Kenneth Blackwell, Ohio's secretary of state, functioned as both the head of Ohio's election activity and co-chaired the Bush/Cheney '04 Ohio efforts. Republicans ignored the obvious conflict of interest. One senator said of election reform, "It's a shame we're wasting our time on this today." What is shameful is that any official sworn to uphold and defend our Constitution was brushing aside voters' rights as inconsequential. One hundred percent of our voters should have complete confidence in the process and outcome, yet we failed them in both 2000 and 2004."

Black Caucus members led debate on disputed Ohio votes 1/7/2005 Black America Web: "During his floor speech, Patrick Tiberi, R-Ohio, said that even the head of the election board in Franklin County, Ohio, “who is an African-American,” he said, supported the election results and those who are challenging the results, “Are beating a dead horse.”
But, Bob Fitrakis, the Ohio law professor and author who was one of the plaintiffs who filed the legal challenge to the Ohio results, said in Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell and Franklin County Election Board Chairman William Anthony were used by Republican operatives to hurt their own people."
Venezuelan government to hand over
90,000 homes this year 1/7/2005 Granma: "Venezuela’s Ministry of Housing and Habitat has promised to hand over 90,000 houses in 2005 as part of an official plan to reactivate uncompleted projects and develop new ones.
Housing Minister Julio Montes, quoted this Thursday by the Venpres news agency, stated that they hope to complete 49,000 homes and build a further 40,000."

Democrats interrupt electoral vote count, force debate on Ohio elections 1/6/2005 AP: "Democratic leaders distanced themselves from the effort, which many in the party worried would make them look like sore losers. Bush won Ohio by 118,000 votes and carried the national contest by 3.3 million votes, and Kerry himself -- meeting with troops in the Middle East -- did not support the challenge.
Even so, Boxer, Tubbs Jones and several other Democrats, including many black lawmakers, tried using the sessions to underscore the missing voting machines, unusually long lines and other problems that plagued some Ohio districts, many in minority neighborhoods, on Nov. 2.
"If they were willing to stand in polls for countless hours in the rain, as many did in Ohio, than I can surely stand up for them here in the halls of Congress," Tubbs Jones said."

Dangers of questioning government actions 1/6/2005 Chicago Tribune: "I have a confession to make: I still think Gary Webb had it mostly right.
I think he got the treatment that always comes to those who dare question aloud the bona fides of the establishment: First he got misrepresented--his suggestion that the CIA tolerated the contras' cocaine trading became an allegation that the agency itself was involved in the drug trade. Then he was ridiculed as a conspiracy-monger--joked one commentator, Howard Kurtz of The Washington Post, "Oliver Stone, check your voice mail." In the end, Webb was rendered untouchable.
I know that I risk being marked down as something of a nut for saying I think Webb was fundamentally right. As my friend and former Commentary page columnist Salim Muwakkil said in one of his pieces on this issue: "To connect the CIA with crack--a drug with race-specific overtones--is considered a mere variation of the old theme of black genocide and is thus deemed irrational in mainstream discourse.""
An Open Letter to Hugo Chavez - On the Detention of Rodrigo Granda 1/6/2005 Counterpunch: "In light of these considerations, we were surprised to learn that the security forces DISIP have been actively involved in the detention of Rodrigo Granda (better known as Ricardo González), member of the international relations team of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC. According to what one has been able to establish by reliable sources, Granda was detained in Caracas this past December 13 and taken to DISIP barracks. Hours later he was transported to Colombia in the trunk of a car, where he was "officially" "captured." No judicial or administrative process was taken into account, in a clear violation of applicable Venezuelan and international laws.
One should recall, President Chavez, that Granda has been received by high state representatives and important political and social organizations throughout the world, as part of his diplomatic activity in the search for a politically negotiated solution to the Colombian conflict."
Democrats Force Debate on Ohio Election Problems 1/6/2005 IHT: "With both houses under Republican control, the move, only the second of its kind since 1877, did not threaten Bush's victory over Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts. Indeed, some Democrats opposed it and the White House spokesman likened it to a pursuit of "conspiracy theories."
But its rarity underscored a lingering sensitivity to election irregularities like those that overshadowed the 2000 election. Democrats complained this time that Ohio election officials, headed by a Republican who led the Bush campaign in the state, had provided too few voting machines in some Democratic precincts and allowed other irregularities."
Congress Certifies Bush's Win After Protest 1/6/2005 Reuters: "The rare objection to vote certification, the first filed in decades, forced the House and Senate to halt their joint session, usually a routine and ceremonial affair. Each chamber then debated the objection, and rejected it, the Senate by a 74-1 vote, the House 267-31. The state-by-state certification was completed a few hours later."

Jackson: Dems need to get ‘backbone’ and fight voter fraud 1/5/2005 Black America Today: "Jesse Jackson can complain, grand stand, whine, stamp his feet all he wants," Blackwell spokesman Carlo LoParo said. "It's not going to change the results of Ohio's election or how voters cast their ballots on Nov. 2."
Challengers are go (Keith Olbermann) 1/5/2005 MSNBC: "Nothing is in writing and daybreak is a long way away, but it appeared all but certain in early evening Wednesday that House Democrats had secured the support of up to half a dozen Senators to formally challenge the Electoral College slate from Ohio, when the votes are opened before a joint session of Congress tomorrow."
Tuesday 1/4/2005
Save Our Votes MARCH ON WASHINGTON 1/4/2005 51 Capital March: "Join us on January 4th for an historic continuation of the Selma to Montgomery march for voting rights.
Join us to protest the massive vote fraud and voter suppression that occurred in the November 2004 elections."

Conyers to object to Ohio vote count, certification 1/4/2005 Black America Web: "We're not going to roll over and surrender when we know there have been countless voting irregularities in Ohio," Conyers told BlackAmericaWeb.com.
"This is the second time that George W. Bush had a one-state victory that is hugely controversial," said Conyers. "We are asking for careful consideration by the House and Senate. Voting is the key to a Democratic system."
Senators should object to Ohio vote 1/4/2005 Chicago Sun Times: by Jesse Jackson
Will John Kerry Report for Duty? 1/4/2005 Consortium News: "Early in Campaign 2004, Sen. John Kerry challenged George W. Bush’s operatives to “bring it on,” fully expecting that they would try to smear his patriotism despite his Vietnam War medals. In accepting the Democratic nomination, Kerry again highlighted his national service by snapping off a salute with the words: “Reporting for duty.”"
Monday 1/3/2005
Ten preliminary reasons why the Bush vote does not compute, and why Congress must investigate rather than certify the Electoral College (Part One of Two) 1/3/2005 Columbus Free Press: "By examining a very wide range of sworn testimonies from voters, polling officials and others close to the administration of the Nov. 2 election; by statistical analysis of the certified vote by mathematicians, election experts and independent research teams who have conducted detailed studies of the results in Ohio, New Mexico, Florida and elsewhere; from experts who studied the voting machines, tabulators and other electronic equipment on which a fair vote count has depended; and from a team of attorneys and others who have challenged the Ohio results; the freepress.org investigative team has compiled a portrait of an election whose true outcome must be investigated further by the Congress, the media and all Americans -- because it was almost certainly not an honest victory for George W. Bush.
Crucial flaws in the national vote count, most importantly in Ohio, New Mexico and Florida, indicate John Kerry was most likely the actual winner on November 2, as reported in national exit polls. At very least, the widespread tampering with how the election was conducted, and how Ohio's votes were counted and re-counted, has compromised this nation's historic commitment to free and fair elections."

Is There One Senator Who Will Stand Up for Black Voters? Democrat Senators on the Hot Seat...Again 1/3/2005 Counterpunch: "Perhaps the most powerful moment in Michael Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9-11" was the stony silence in the hall of the joint session of Congress as a line of African- American and other non-white representatives stood up and pleaded for just one senator to issue an official challenge to the Florida electoral college delegation and its vote in favor of candidate George Bush.
This Thursday, we are destined to have a repeat of that dramatic event."
Missing in Action - The Media and the Ohio Recount 1/3/2005 Counterpunch
Most provisional votes rejected 1/3/2005 Democrat Capitol, FL: "Two-thirds of all provisional ballots submitted in the general election were rejected, according to a Tallahassee Democrat analysis of reports provided by the state's 67 county supervisors of elections. Most ballots were thrown out because the voter was not registered in that county."
