ABOUT FACE  1/2/2005 Aviation Week & Space Technology: "The White House Office of Management and Budget is telling the Pentagon to slash its 2006 budget plan by $10 billion and prepare for another $10-billion cut each year for the duration of the future years' defense plan, sending military officials scrambling to comply with the last-minute financial demand."

Pipes Favors Concentration Camps By Juan Cole  1/2/2005 Axis of Logic: "That the Revisionist-Zionist extremist Daniel Pipes has fond visions of rounding up Muslim Americans and putting them in concentration camps isn't a big surprise. That a mainstream American newspaper would publish this David-Dukeian evil is. Of course, this is also a man that President Bush appointed to a temporary vacancy at the United States Institute of Peace, after the Senate understandably balked at a regular appointment for him. Pipes's little project requires him to attempt to justify the internment of American citizens (of Japanese ancestry) during World War II, a violation on several grounds of the Bill of Rights. I hope Asian-Americans realize that a key wing of the Republican Party, i.e. the Neoconservatives, wishes them ill. If the American yahoos ever start putting people in concentration camps, I think we may be assured that they won't stop with the Muslims or the Asians, and Mr. Pipes will come to have reason to regret his imprudence and, frankly, his demonic implication."

topUS Muslims Fingerprinted at Border  1/1/2005 Arab News: "US Muslim organizations are calling for an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into an incident at the Canadian border where American Muslim citizens were singled out for special security checks based on their attendance at an Islamic conference. They were held until they agreed to be fingerprinted. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the incident was a disturbing example of religious profiling that would have a chilling effect on the constitutional rights of American Muslims, particularly the right to the free exercise of religion, freedom of speech, peaceful assembly, and the right to be “secure in their persons; against unreasonable searches.”"

Did We Bounce An Election?  1/1/2005 Columbus Free Press: "The canvass report (available as a pdf from the Secretary of State's website http://www.sos.state.nm.us/Election/cntyindx04.html) is the official record of the election results. It is certified by the state Canvassing Board (consisting of Governor Bill Richardson, Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron and Supreme Court Chief Justice Patricia Maes) and is used as the basis for determining who will represent the people of New Mexico in public offices and, in a presidential election, which slate of electors will be chosen for the Electoral College. With so much at stake, one would expect the canvass report to be a lot cleaner than my checkbook. That is not the case. Much has been made of New Mexico's dubious honor of leading the nation in undervote percentage. I recently wrote an article pointing out the alarming number of phantom votes lurking in the New Mexico canvass report. Just what are undervotes and phantom votes and what do they tell us about our election process?"

topFormer Congressman Peter Deutsch to Assist Constitutional Challenge of Electors on Behalf of ReDefeatBush, DoNotConcede Coalition, Others  12/31/2004 ReDefeat Bush: "The Committee to ReDefeat the President, a federal PAC better known by the name of its popular ReDefeatBush.com Web site, has secured the assistance of Peter Deutsch, who will conclude his tenure as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives at noon on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005. Deutsch will help ReDefeatBush and other organizations that are working on a Constitutional Challenge to the electoral votes of Florida, Ohio and potentially other states. Preparations are underway for a public forum on Wednesday afternoon at the Capitol at which Deutch will publicly question some of the key witnesses to activities that may have surpassed the boundaries of normal partisanship and crossed over into illegal activity in Florida. In his preparation Deutsch has the assistance of Wayne Madsen, an experienced analyst and investigator who previously worked for the National Security Agency. For the benefit of Members of Congress considering supporting the challenge Deutsch will be publicly questioning Bev Harris of Black Box Voting, who witnessed the unlawful disposal of original voter registreys that are required to be archived under Florida law. He will also question Clint Curtis, the Florida whistleblower who has testified that he was asked by Congressman Tom Feeney's to create the software necessary to modify the results of electronic voting machines."

topNo holiday for vote thieves  12/29/2004 Black Commentator: "The dean of the Congressional Black Caucus is confident that at least a few U.S. senators will join House members on Jan. 6 to question the fairness of the Nov. 2 election. John Conyers Jr., the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, told Salon.com he doesn’t believe the Senate will repeat its performance of four years ago, when Black lawmakers sought in vain for one senatorial objection to “official misconduct, deliberate fraud and an attempt to suppress voter turnout by unlawful means” in Florida, as Congressman Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., put it at the time. “No, I think the Senate is going to go along with an inquiry this time,” said Conyers. “I don't think they would embarrass themselves to let this happen two times in a row … I just don't think the Senate would get caught in that position.” Conyers is careful not to name names, claiming he hasn’t spoken directly to a single senator, but adding, “There are Republicans who support what I'm doing who haven't been willing to come forward.”"

topOhio GOP election officials ducking subpoenas as Kerry enters stolen vote fray  12/28/2004 Columbus Free Press

Conyers's stinging condemnation of a voting firm over "cheat sheets"  12/28/2004 Raw Story: "In the letter, displayed below and on the following pages, Conyers makes note of these "cheat sheets" which the company's president admitted to. He asserts that the sheets—which allow local officials to ignore actual ballots in the recount—"is an invitation to completely ignore the purpose of the recount law." "

topOhio Official Refuses Interview Over Vote  12/27/2004 AP: "Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell has requested a protective order to prevent him from being interviewed as part of an unusual court challenge of the presidential vote. Blackwell, in a court filing, says he's not required to be interviewed by lawyers as a high-ranking public official, and accused the voters challenging the results of ``frivolous conduct'' and abusive and unnecessary requests of elections officials around the state."

Kerry Preparing Grounds to Unconcede Election Challenge likely on Jan 6th  12/27/2004 Break For News

State lawmakers look to prevent future recounts  12/27/2004 Chillicothe Gazette, OH: "Lawmakers and Secretary of State Ken Blackwell are considering restrictions on who can ask for a recount. They also may seek a price increase. The proposals likely will be part of a broader election reform bill. Blackwell calls the $10 cost per precinct a "basement bargain price" that has been unchanged since 1956, likely because a candidate has never requested a statewide recount in Ohio."

Grand Lake Theater Marquee  12/27/2004 Fotolog: "We salute Congressman Conyers for leading a Congressional inquiry on the election fraud"

Conspiracies theorized, or conspiracies invoked?  12/27/2004 MSNBC, Keith Olbermann: "I would caution the media not to read more into what the Kerry-Edwards campaign has said," Mr. Hoffheimer advised us by e-mail, "than what you hear in the plain meaning of our comments. There are many conspiracy theorists opining these days. There are many allegations of fraud. But this presidential election is over. The Bush-Cheney ticket has won. The Kerry-Edwards campaign has found no conspiracy and no fraud in Ohio, though there have been many irregularities that cry out to be fixed for future elections. Senator Kerry and we in Ohio intend to fix them. When all of the problems in Ohio are added together, however bad they are, they do not add up to a victory for Kerry-Edwards. Senator Kerry's fully-informed and extremely careful assessment the day after the election and before he conceded remains accurate today, notwithstanding all the details we have since learned."

Critics are hypocrites, says Putin  12/27/2004 Sydney Morning Herald: "Do you think that the electoral system in the United States is without flaws?" Mr Putin said on Thursday. "Need I remind you of how their elections were held in the United States?"

Doing the Right Thing  12/27/2004 Znet: "Jesse Jackson and the Green Party are both on the progressive side of the political spectrum, but it's still quite something to see them, along with many other groups, coming together to try to get to the bottom of the voter disenfranchisement/election machine fraud/voter suppression scandal that continues to grow despite a near-whiteout by the corporate media."

"There is one safeguard known generally to the wise, which is an advantage and security to all, but especially to Democracies as against despots: suspicion." -- Demosthenes
