What Went Wrong in Ohio 5/15/2005 Black Voter Network: "On May 6th, Academy Chicago Publishers released its newest political title, WHAT WENT WRONG IN OHIO: The Conyers Report on the 2004 Presidential Election, Introduction by Gore Vidal. This is the first release in book form of Congressman John Conyers' investigation into Ohio election manipulation.
While shreds of the electoral chaos in Ohio were reported in the press, the issue soon faded from public view. WHAT WENT WRONG IN OHIO provides insights into the abuse and manipulation of electronic voting machines and the arbitrary and illegal behavior of officials, which effectively disenfranchised tens of thousands of voters."
Straw at odds with US over brutality of terror war ally 5/15/2005 Telegraph, UK: "Witnesses said that women and children were among the demonstrators shot by soldiers in Uzbekistan, a former Soviet republic which has become crucial for America's attempt to keep control in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, who faces criticism for British support of Uzbekistan's dictatorial regime, condemned its record.
He said the situation was "very serious" and there had been a "clear abuse" of human rights.
Mr Straw's remarks were in contrast to the near silence in Washington where the brutal crackdown in Uzbekistan has posed an acute dilemma."

'El' Jazeera 5/13/2005 Alternet: "To balance the anti-Chavez local press and pro-American CNN, Venezuela is launching a South American Al Jazeera. With journalistic heavyweights and a non-corporate vibe, the channel arrives on the scene as a number of Latin American nations are leaning politically left."

S.Africa's ANC seeks Aristide return to Haiti 5/13/2005 Reuters: "South Africa's ruling ANC party intensified its campaign on Friday for the return to Haiti of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide as part of a drive to restore order and end bloodshed in the Caribbean country.
Aristide was forced to leave Haiti 14 months ago in the face of an armed rebellion and pressure from Washington and Paris, and now lives in exile in South Africa.
He says his expulsion amounted to a coup and failed to bring peace to his country of 8 million people, the poorest country in the Americas.
"The constitutional order must be restored, which should include the creation of conditions for the return of all exiles, including President Aristide, and the organisation of free, peaceful and fair democratic elections," the African National Congress (ANC) said in its weekly newsletter.
In a scathing commentary on events in Haiti, the ANC urged the United Nations to work with regional groups like the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to end what it said was the persecution of members of Aristide's Lavalas party, illegal arrests and summary executions.
"Urgent steps need to be taken to end the brutalisation of Haiti's population and open the way for a meaningful national dialogue towards the restoration of the country's constitutional order," the ANC said."

Teaching Race in Venezuela 5/13/2005 Venezuela Analysis: "At the International Afro-Descendent Conference hosted by Venezuela last weekend, Humberto Brown of the Global Afro-Latino and Caribbean Initiative (USA) stated that “Afro Descendents cannot talk about democracy in countries in which racism exists.” The conference was hosted by The Afro-Venezuelan Network and the Ministry of Information and Communication May 6-8 in Caracas. The aim of the conference was to ensure that in the process of creating Latin American unity, the inclusion of historically oppressed sectors (composed mainly of indigenous and Afro-descendent groups) is not overlooked. Participating in discussions were panelists from Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Colombia, among others, as well as a delegation from the US-based Trans-Africa Forum."
What the CIA Could Learn from Venezuela: The Luis Posada Carriles Case 5/13/2005 Venezuela Analysis: "Luis Posada Carriles is a fugitive from justice in Venezuela and an international terrorist, so defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and therefore cannot be granted political asylum under U.S. law."

Black Caucus Conservatives Attempt to Clone Themselves 5/12/2005 Black Commentator: "Corporate funding and influence have succeeded in placing the most rightwing members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in key positions that empower them to recruit and fund other business- and Republican-friendly Black candidates. Unless independent mechanisms are created to finance progressive CBC incumbents – and nurture challengers to the corporate contributions-rich members – the rightwing faction will replicate itself, and the Caucus will lose all but ceremonial value to Black America."
Black Radical Congress to meet in Atlanta 5/12/2005 Black Commentator: "These are only a few of the issues we will address. How to fight militarism, neo-liberalism, AIDS, Black conservatism and homophobia, as well as building coalitions in pursuit of reparations, peace and sexual equality, will also be tackled. Atlanta on Juneteenth weekend is the place to be. We look forward to seeing you. Check details and updates for the Congress 2005 program at www.blackradicalcongress.org."

The veneer of fraternity 5/12/2005 Guardian, UK: "Tony Blair is not the first British prime minister to embrace a US president's mendacity, but he could well be the last."
Washington loses control of the OAS 5/12/2005 ISN: "Washington’s hold on the OAS began to falter after its support of the anti-Chavez coup. In 2003, the alliance’s General Assembly refused to seat Washington's candidate Rafael Martinez on the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights, leaving the Commission without a member from the US for the first time in its history. Even more severe resistance to Washington’s desires came in 2004 when an OAS observer mission refused to condemn the vote in a referendum to recall Chavez, which he won by a comfortable margin. Washington’s losses in the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and in its efforts to eliminate the Chavez regime were preludes to its loss of control of the OAS in the election for secretary general. Opposition to Washington in the alliance was triggered by the Chavez affair, but it reflects far deeper shifts in the balance of power in the hemisphere that spell declining influence for the US over the long term, signaled at present by the rise of Brazil as a regional power center in South America and the bid by Venezuela to become a “small major power” committed to building a mixed cooperativist-capitalist economy and diminishing Washington’s power in Latin America and the Caribbean."
Case Reopened against Mayor Says Venezuela’s Supreme Court 5/12/2005 Venezuela Analysis: "On April 12, 2002 several hours after a military junta arrested Chávez and appointed business-leader Pedro Carmona “interim President,” an angry mob of the new government’s supporters surrounded the Cuban embassy, located in the municipality of Baruta. The mob demanded that embassy officials hand over Chávez’s Vice-President Diosdado Cabello who was thought to have sought refuge in the embassy. When Cuban officials declined, the mob destroyed cars parked outside the building, and cut off all electricity and water running into it. Capriles, then as now mayor of Baruta, was present and did not prevent the violence, providing the basis for subsequent charges against him two years later.
Footage was later made public that showed Capriles inside the embassy demanding that Cuban embassador Germán Sánchez allow him to search the premises for fugitive government functionaries.
State prosecutors had sought Capriles’ conviction on charges of “illegitimate privation of liberty, public intimidation, violation of international principles [in the intimidation of Cuban diplomats], violation of private property on the part of public officials and damage to private property.”"

The Still Unsolved Stoffel Affair: How Is Known – but Not Who or Why 5/10/2005 Debka File, Israel: "In early December, he began complaining he was not paid and was concerned about the way Iraqi officials handled finances. According to the Washington Post account, he returned home for Thanksgiving and petitioned Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa) and Rep. Tim Murphy (r-Pa) for help. Santorum sent a letter to the Pentagon asking for the matter to be examined. Days before he was killed, Stoffel returned to Iraq.
Later, his colleagues said they were unsure whether the two Americans died as victims of random violence or because Stoffel’s complaints about withheld payment would have laid bare possible corruption in high places in Baghdad."

CREOLE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN 5/9/2005 Indymedia: "The present paper envisages the Afro-Caribbean Ethnia of San Andres in a developmental process. Once this aspect explicated and clarified, the most relevant cultural aspects are illustrated. The family, the possession of the land, gastronomy, religion, public administration and party politics, music and dancing, and the oral tradition are some of the main characteristics which will be taken into consideration, amongst others. One of the most important manifestations of any culture is language. In this case, the Afro-Caribbean people of San Andres and Old Providence coexist with the presence of several languages. Three of these languages are spoken and/or understood by the Creole people. Two of these languages come from a European heritage, the other is the product of cultural syncretism within African, Caribbean, and Anglo-Saxon elements in the context of a culture with an Afro-Caribbean air. Some central aspects of the Caribbean Creole language, with an English based lexicon, in the environment of the Archipelago of San Andres and Old Providence."

Most of them belong to communities of Colombians of African descent living in the Bojaya region, on the Pacific coast, according to the officials."
Putin Defends His 'Democracy' 5/8/2005 CBS 60 Minutes: "On the eve of a meeting with President Bush in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin responds to criticism of democracy in Russia, raising questions about the U.S. 2000 election and President Bush’s decision to go to war in Iraq.
In an exclusive interview to be broadcast on 60 Minutes Sunday, Correspondent Mike Wallace repeats criticism from the Bush White House about recent changes Putin has instituted in Russia. Putin tells Wallace he should question his own country's democratic ways before looking for problems with Russia's."

Soldier lifts lid on Camp Delta 5/8/2005 Observer: "In an exclusive interview, Saar told The Observer that prisoners were physically assaulted by 'snatch squads' and subjected to sexual interrogation techniques and that the Geneva Conventions were deliberately ignored by the US military.
He also said that soldiers staged fake interrogations to impress visiting administration and military officials. Saar believes that the great majority of prisoners at Guantánamo have no terrorist links and little worthwhile intelligence information has emerged from the base despite its prominent role in America's war on terror."
British memo indicates Bush made intelligence fit Iraq policy 5/8/2005 Reuters: "The newly disclosed memo, which was first reported by the Sunday Times of London, hasn't been disavowed by the British government. A spokesman for the British Embassy in Washington referred queries to another official, who didn't return calls for comment on Thursday.
A former senior U.S. official called it "an absolutely accurate description of what transpired" during the senior British intelligence officer's visit to Washington. He spoke on condition of anonymity."
Captured Al-Qaeda kingpin is case of ‘mistaken identity’ 5/8/2005 Times of London: "THE capture of a supposed Al-Qaeda kingpin by Pakistani agents last week was hailed by President George W Bush as “a critical victory in the war on terror”. According to European intelligence experts, however, Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not the terrorists’ third in command, as claimed, but a middle-ranker derided by one source as “among the flotsam and jetsam” of the organisation."

Bad, Bad Janice Brown is Back 5/5/2005 Black Commentator: "“Mad” is exactly the right word to describe Janice Rogers Brown – in every sense of the term. She is a rightwing nut case, the end product of the litmus test that Republicans give to potential Black high bench nominees: they must be even crazier than their white GOP counterparts."
Pentagon Analyst Charged With Disclosing Military Secrets 5/5/2005 NYT: "Federal agents arrested a Pentagon analyst on Wednesday, accusing him of illegally disclosing highly classified information about possible attacks on American forces in Iraq to two employees of a pro-Israel lobbying group."
The Pope put Bush in power and covered up sex scandals 5/5/2005 Progreso Weekly: "As the world became aware of pedophilia in the priesthood, Ratzinger took command of the Vatican’s counter offensive, a course that interfered with justice for the victims of priests’ abuse and also with U.S. politics. How to direct the public away from the fact that hundreds of priests have taken advantage of kids in their parishes? In the 2004 elections, the Church weighed in on the side of George W. Bush and other candidates who opposed abortion and gay marriage, issues most likely to divert attention away from the scandal.
On August 11, 2004, less than three months before the elections, Ratzinger sent a directive to U.S. Bishops. “The Church teaches that abortion or euthanasia is a grave sin,” citing previous Church doctrine, he warned Catholics. “In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law or vote for it.” Christians have a “grave obligation of conscience not to cooperate formally in practices which, even if permitted by civil legislation, are contrary to God’s law. Indeed, from the moral standpoint, it is never licit to cooperate formally in evil...This cooperation can never be justified…"
Defense Analyst Charged With Sharing Secrets 5/5/2005 Washington Post: "A Defense Department policy analyst has been charged with disclosing classified information two years ago related to potential attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq, the Justice Department announced yesterday.
Lawrence Franklin, 58, made the unauthorized disclosure to two pro-Israeli lobbyists while having lunch at a restaurant in Arlington in 2003, according to court documents and law enforcement sources. Franklin also gave classified information to a foreign official and unidentified members of the media, and 83 classified documents dating back three decades were found in a search of his West Virginia home, the documents stated.
Court documents did not identify to whom Franklin gave information at the lunch, but law enforcement sources said it was two top officials with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, one of Washington's most influential lobbying organizations. The officials, Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman, recently left their jobs amid what sources have said is a long-running FBI probe into whether they passed classified U.S. data to the government of Israel. It remains unclear whether any classified information reached Israel."

Italian agent Calipari: A target of opportunity for US assassins
Not the first Italian target of US covert 'silencers' 5/2/2005 On line Journal: published 3/22 - "High-level European intelligence sources report that the 51-year old slain Italian SISMI military intelligence agent, Dr. Nicola Calipari, killed by U.S. sharpshooters while accompanying the freed Italian hostage—Il Manifesto journalist Giuliana Sgrena—to Baghdad International Airport, was a prized target of opportunity for American assassins because of his knowledge about past Republican White House ties to Saddam Hussein's nuclear program.
Calipari was also reportedly privy to information about illegal U.S. covert operations in Iraq from his sources within the bloc of Iraqi resistance fighters led by former Republican Guards. Moreover, European intelligence sources report that Calipari was not the first Italian intelligence agent with expertise on Iraq to be killed by U.S. covert "wet affairs" operatives."
