11J - 11 Julio, 2021Starting July 11, 2021, demonstrations broke out all over Cuba against the ravages of COVID, the blockade, and the poorly managed economy. It was fueled by social media and centered especially on "marginal" barrios which we prefer to call "carrier" barrios ("barrios portadores") as they carry traditional African culture: La Güinera, Centro Habana, Diez de Octubre, Cerro, and others in Havana but also across the country. In Santa Clara and Camaguey, the majority of the protestors were white. This was a victory for the US/Miami efforts since 1985 to play on their interpretation of racialized realities in the Cuban community. These efforts recently include direct US government interventions in the San Isidro movement, which had its impact on 11J but had little to do with its unfolding and certainly did not lead it. The 11J was a serious call to action for the Cuban government and for those who do not want to see a Miami victory. Yet the protestors, including a number of Black communists, were heavily repressed and many were beaten in detention. One was shot and killed. A list was kept of the missing and presumably detained and at one point the list went over 600. The total number of detained reached 1300. Like many cultures, Cuba is caught in its past, which in this case is highly colonized. There was always a strong central economic control as there was in Spain with its royal absolutism and the Catholic Inquisition. The crown actually fully supported Cuban plantations under slavery, they were not allowed to fail. Revolutions everywhere concentrate on politics, not on the deep levels of culture and psychology where patterns persist for hundreds if not thousands of years. The ideas of decentralization, personal initiative/responsibility, and communal development are all difficult for the Cuban communists, who inherited the Spanish traditions, to absorb and put to use. The Church had a tendency to glorify poverty and many of today's comrades still view making money as a sin. The Vietnamese and the Chinese communists who did not suffer through the Spanish colonial history have no such problems and have produced booming economies. Vietnam implemented its Đổi Mới ("Innovation") in 1986 after realizing that classic western communism was leading to starvation, much as is happening in Cuba today, albeit with generous assistance from the US. Vietnam and China once had emperors but these were from very different traditions than European monarchies. Blaming Cuba's very poor economic performance on the genocidal blockade is the perennial excuse, but seems only partially true. For example, there are periodic shortages of yucca, a plant that has grown in Cuba since the Arawaks brought it there from the Amazon. It is a hardy plant, does not require fertilizer, nor much water. Its periodic absence in the markets is inexcusable. Lucha tu yuca, Taino! The protests sent shock waves through the government and they are trying to grapple with the consequences. It is noteworthy that this document on a more critical solidarity received favorable internal reviews at a senior level: Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution 7/22/2021 A great many discussions are being held, some publicly. Many revolutionary comrades were part of the protests, yet like most Cubans they did not remark on the growing white supremacy in Miami. "If it is simplistic to attribute the social situation to external actors, so is ignoring the role of the sanctions and pro-interventionist agitation of a false humanitarianism." Update, 7/18/22 The hard liners prevailed and criminalized all opposition, handing out exceptionally severe prison sentences to the 11J protestors, around 8 years on average. The Soviet experience with Glasnost looms large. Likely MININT's internal analysis is that if they are not severe, there will be many more protests. There will be in any case and, in addition, the reaction to 11J seems to be one of the drivers for the current mass exodus from the island. The protestors have been framed as being US agents no different than those in the San Isidro movement, which is simply not true. This inaccurate appraisal is said to be due to the replacement of Fidel's MININT people with army officers who have little background in intelligence and counterintelligence. They seem to have forgotten that Batista's police and prisons did little to stop the Revolution. They prefer to invest in new police vehicles rather than trucks to move produce from the fields where they lie rotting, fueling popular anger. They are blind to the racial dimensions of the politics in Cuba and in the US. But they need help: however dysfunctional they are, they are nothing like what would replace them from Miami, which has a lot of practice in carrying out racially motivated massacres and targeted assassinations from Florida throughout Latin America. Much of the postings and writings on the opposition side feature white/light skinned political prisoners. Where are the Black Cubans from the majority Black neighborhoods where these protests took place? Is this because those who have internet access, who have folks abroad that can help them, are white Ibero Spanish Cubans? The image at left shows about half appear Black, this is the exception and comes from a Black Cuban source. A year on from 11J, the basic demographic facts of these demonstrations, unprecedented in the history of Cuba since the 1959 Revolution, are being subsumed in Miami where demonstrations in favor of 11J fly the banners of white supremacists Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. The Miami/Havana polarization is controlled by European thinking and culture -- Miami is largely white and a base for white supremacy across Latin America, but the island rarely calls them out for this. Havana and Miami are locked in the classic millennia-old European good vs. evil war. They would do well to look into the words of the famous Iyanifa, Sophie Bọ́sẹ̀dé Olúwọlé: "Ènìyàn kan ò lè gba ire, kó má gba ibi; Tibi tire la dá ilé ayé." This is to say that good and evil are intertwined and are equally forceful entities. Or they could consult their Chinese comrades many of whom are well versed in the Dao, they say the same. So do the Incas and many others. Just one example is the demonization of people getting funding from USAID/NED. These could be tracked and publicized, but demonized? Every Black group in Colombia gets funds from USAID/NED. Did that prevent them from supporting Francia Marquez? Former Minister of Culture Abel Prieto is another example of demonizing tendencies, amply reciprocated from the Miami side. Prieto specializes in attacking voices on the left for not toeing the line while ignoring how racialized this conflict has become. He and his comrades need to understand that so long as they refuse to take this racialization seriously, they will continue to lose ground.
There are those in the US solidarity movement who are in denial of many of
these realities on the ground, they accept the Cuban elite's demonization.

Abel Prieto Jiménez was Minister of Culture of Cuba for two periods (1997−2012 and 2016 -2018). He is currently president of Casa de las Americas, an institution that disseminates, publishes and awards literature, arts and social sciences in the American continent. As Minister of Culture he presided over 39 departments: not one of them had a Black Cuban as department head. He is not recorded as ever saying this was a problem that needed resolving. He is on record for his extensive bullying of noted Black Cuban singer Daymé Arocena, causing her to flee the country. He accused her of being capitalist at a time when Black small business is being promoted within government structures - he failed to learn from the history of Celia Cruz's dispute with Fidel. In the 11J matter, he intervened publicly to demonize those who did not agree with his orthodox position, as below.

¿Se puede ser de izquierda y sumarse a la campaña mediática contra Cuba? En los últimos días, se ha estado moviendo una "carta abierta", supuestamente elaborada desde la izquierda, que repite todos los tópicos de la versión yanqui en torno a los hechos del 11 y el 12 de julio y al proceso donde los tribunales cubanos han venido juzgando a los responsables directos de la violencia. La única pincelada "izquierdista" del texto tiene que ver con una rápida mención al bloqueo de los EEUU contra nuestro país. Todo lo demás es una contribución vergonzosa a la imagen de Cuba que están imponiendo los medios hegemónicos y las redes sociales. Junto a nombres que no significan nada, han reunido algunas firmas de figuras valiosas del pensamiento de la emancipación. Sabemos cómo se trabajan estas declaraciones y con cuánta ligereza se obtienen algunas firmas. Pero colocarse hoy del lado del Imperio para atacar a Cuba es un acto contra natura en toda persona digna, sobre todo si cree en la posibilidad de construir un mundo alternativo al reino del dinero y la barbarie.

July 11 in Cuba: A Year Later 7/7/2022 WOLA: "The Cuban government
responded to the largely peaceful protests with repression and censorship. It is
estimated that over 1,500 people were detained and deprived of their liberty
following J11. Many of them remain in preventive detention awaiting trial. There
has been a significant lack of transparency and official reporting by the Cuban
government about the situation of those detained, with the authorities only
releasing official statements in January and in June. The office of Cuba’s
Attorney General reported that there were 790 people indicted of which 488 have
been sentenced, primarily for sedition, acts of vandalism, violent robbery and
disturbances of public order. Of those who have been sentenced, 16 are minors
between 16 and 18 years old. In total, 55 minors were accused of a crime, with
28 held in pretrial detention and only 18 having their sentence modified or

professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and the author of the book “The
Power of Race in Cuba,” is listed as a presenter in the same panel. But she said
she was added to the panel late in the process and was not aware of Santamaria’s
work with the interior ministry. Clealand said she was invited to participate by
Milagros Martinez, a professor and administrator at the University of Havana who
has co-chaired the Cuba section in the past. Clealand has stressed in media
interviews the central role of Afro-Cubans and racial inequities in the protests
last year. She said she was still undecided about how to move forward with the
panel. “This is a difficult position to be in,” Clealand said. “I think my voice
and participation are important here because of my alternative perspective on
the protests.”"

necessary, for the sake of objectivity, to triangulate the facts or critically
analyze the results of the investigation and counteract them with the evidence
provided in the testimonies of the interviewees. For example: in the case of the
arrest of Leonardo Romero , the Prosecutor's Office report states that the
camera of the Hotel Saratoga did not capture the exact moment of the events.
However, he mentioned the existence of other cameras in the Capitol and in the
Concepción Arenal school. Given these possible tests, the answer was that the

amid the pandemic, and the government was short of foreign exchange currency to

send remittances, the government abolished the 10 ten-percent tax on dollars
entirely. Today, Cubans can deposit remittances in a debit card account and can
use the card in stores that sell goods priced in dollars. There is no 10 percent
tax, no requirement that dollars be exchanged for Cuban pesos, and no exchange
fee. For now, Cubans who have dollars in cash and want to exchange them for
pesos cannot do it officially. The banks are not taking cash dollar deposits
because the government has trouble spending U.S. currency abroad due to

These Black societies survived colonialism. You hear me? Colonialism. They were
completely disbanded in the early 1960s because the Communist government said

part of the revolution. It’s counterrevolutionary to talk about Black history in
