Homage in Cuba to Trinidadian Artist Patricia Bishop  8/30/2012 Norman Girvan: "In a recent press conference, Trinidadian ambassador to Cuba Jennifer Jones invited the Cuban people to participate in the homage-paying gala for Bishop, who became an icon of her country’s cultural area, Pl news agency reported. Patricia Bishop was granted numerous distinctions for her work as musical director, musicologist, fashion designer, historian and civil rights activists. She was the first musician to have achieved a combination of a steel band with a symphonic orchestra."

Acutely focusing on Ifá, Martin Holbraad takes the reader inside consultations, initiations, and lively public debates to show how Ifá practitioners see truth as something to be not so much represented, as transformed. Bringing his findings to bear on the discipline of anthropology itself, he recasts the very idea of truth as a matter not only of epistemological divergence but also of ontological difference—the question of truth, he argues, is not simply about how things may appear differently to people, but also about the different ways of imagining what those things are."

El Cimarrón de Alberto Lescay, a 15 años de su nacimiento  8/25/2012 Cubarte: "La proyección del documental Homenaje al Cimarrón, que se realizó en el Festival de la Cultura en Digital constituyó un tributo al quince aniversario del emplazamiento de este monumento al cimarrón en el Cobre de Santiago de Cuba. Este documental fue realizado por el director Roberto Román y fue estrenado en la reciente Fiesta del Fuego. La Casa del Alba acogió al relevante escultor Alberto Lescay, autor del mencionado monumento, y al doctor Fernando Martínez Heredia, Premio Nacional de Ciencias Sociales, quien realizó una intervención a propósito de la significación cultural de la realización y emplazamiento de la pieza."

‘Thanks for Putting Up with Me’ - Rogelio Martínez Furé  8/25/2012 Havana Times: "When asked about his poetry, he clarified that he had poor sight and had needed to learn works by heart. He then became silent again. He took out a pen, began moving his head, approached the microphone and began the verses that were accompanied with soft taps on the table. For moments he would sing in a low voice in an African language. With the help of his pen he carried his rhythm through African codes."

Estuvimos cerca de cinco años trabajando y siempre salía lo otro, la peregrinación y el culto a San Lázaro, porque no se pueden separar. Durante la búsqueda, que fue reconocida y aprobada como investigación oficial de nuestro Instituto, descubrimos el desconocimiento que había en la población. Preguntábamos: “¿Por qué viene al santuario de Rincón?”. Las respuestas demostraban un desconocimiento de la historia del lugar y del origen de la peregrinación, y me dije: “Si hay tal confusión, debemos vincular la historia de Rincón con la de San Lázaro, para esclarecer”».

Mala in Cuba  7/30/2012 Havana Cultura: "When Mala— a British-Jamaican electronic artist better known as ‘Digital Mystikz’— accompanied his friend and fellow DJ Gilles Peterson to the recording of his latest Havana Cultura album, he wasn’t sure what to expect. The experience, however, allowed Mala to meet some of the Cuban capitals most promising artists—from vocalist Danay Suárez to jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca—with whom he recorded traditional Cuban rhythms. Mala returned home with a laptop full of inspiration, which he then sewed together in his own particular way. The result of this experiment is the album Mala in Cuba, which marries the sound system culture of London with the rhythmic leanings of Cuban jazz."

La división de la Habana: Territorial Conflict and Cultural Hegemony in the Followers of Oyo Lukumí Religion, 1850s–1920s  7/16/2012 Johns Hopkins: published in 2003 - "The Yoruba presence in the Americas, particularly in Brazil and Cuba, has been the topic of much research in past years. The role of the individuals who molded and guided the new directions taken by these cultural manifestations, however, continues to be virgin terrain. In particular and without doubt, women were the most important contributors to these acculturative processes. The present article examines the influence of three African women and their contribution to the evolution and survival of Lukumi religion in Cuba. In so doing, it brings to the fore other important issues that cast light on the lives of Afro-Cuban women in nineteenth-century Cuba forced to live in a Eurocentric society in which they occupied the lowest rung of the ladder. These issues highlight the hardships and impediments that in many ways all Afro-Cubans had to overcome in their struggle for power and respect--even among members of their own ethnic groups. Eventually, this struggle played an important role in the contributions made by these groups to Cuban culture and society."

Una profecía fatal  7/14/2012 Jiribilla: de Raul Ramos - "Una cuestión polémica en la vida del político negro cubano Martín Morúa Delgado fue la Enmienda que dio nombre al artículo 17 de la Ley Electoral de la República durante la primera década del pasado siglo XX. Presentada al Senado el 11 de febrero de 1910 —último año de su gestión como congresista y casualmente, el último de su existencia— tenía como supuesto objetivo evitar una lucha racial en Cuba, pero su verdadero trasfondo fue eliminar de la escena política al Partido Independiente de Color, organización surgida en agosto de 1908 bajo la dirección del veterano de la Guerra del 95 Evaristo Estenoz Corominas, como una respuesta al orden social impuesto que afectaba los derechos de los ciudadanos negros."

REITERA NANCY MOREJÓN JÚBILO POR LAURO DE SECCIÓN CUBA DE LASA  7/12/2012 UNEAC: "La escritora Nancy Morejón, una de las voces más destacadas de la poesía cubana contemporánea, reiteró en La Habana su agradecimiento por el Premio a la Excelencia Académica en los estudios sobre Cuba de la Asociación de Estudios Latinoamericanos (Lasa). The influences of this experience on my work will come with time, but it’s important to have the space to be able to have a dialogue. Cuban art is not unique. Even before the Revolution our art was very universal: dance, music, cinema. Ntongho Eyang Ékpè  7/8/2012 Voice of the Leopard: "In November, 2011 several Ékpè leaders from Cameroon gave a certificate of recognition to their Cuban Abakua counterparts, that stated: “This is to certify that the title of Ntongho Eyang Ékpè has been awarded to the Cuban Ékpè, for their dedication towards the preservation, research and promotion of the Ékpè culture. On this day of October 17th, 2009. Signed Sisiku Emmanuel Ojong Orok.” Ntongho Eyang Ékpè means ‘teacher of Ékpè’ in the Ejagham language of Nigeria and Cameroon."

Given his own wanderings this seems appropriate, since having been born in Italy he has lived in Malta, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, U.S.A., Cuba, Mexico, and is now based in Brazil. This collection of work from his time in Cuba and the associated text is powerful, moving, evocative and well thoughts out. This is someone who has been there within the mysterious world of Afro-Cuban religion. 100 años de la masacre de los Independientes de Color  5/18/2012 ALAI: "Contrariamente a lo que se dijo, el movimiento de los negros no fue racista sino político, ya que sus demandas, lejos de beneficiar sólo a ellos, tenían en cuenta a los sectores más desposeídos del país. Su base programática, muy avanzada para la época, incluía derechos obreros; derechos ciudadanos; nacionalismo; instrucción pública, así como tierra para los campesinos. Los Independientes de Color nunca pretendieron una república dirigida únicamente por ciudadanos negros; entre otras cosas, el acta constitucional de la Agrupación Independiente de Color decía que “la raza negra tiene derecho a intervenir en el gobierno del país, no con el fin de gobernar a nadie, sino con el propósito de que se nos gobierne bien, llevar a la práctica una era de paz moral para todos los cubanos”. Nada de imposición racista, pues, aunque, si bien es cierto, tampoco sumisión hacia los blancos, como aclararon en el periódico Previsión –órgano oficial de los Independientes de Color- del 20 de octubre de 1909: “No aspiramos a la supremacía del negro sobre el blanco, pero tampoco aceptamos, ni aceptaremos nunca la del blanco sobre el negro”."

Cuban National Folkloric Dance Company 50th anniversary  5/17/2012 Granma: ""Every time has its aesthetic… We are not a museum; we don’t do ethnographic reproductions, but rather folkloric works inspired by tradition." That is how they were born, as one of the founders and current advisor Rogelio Martínez Furé said during a press conference, "Our idea was to create a professional folkloric dance company. One which would maintain popular traditions, not doing ethnographic reproductions, since only the people create folklore, no one can imitate a bembé, a Los Hoyos conga, the chants of a street vendor." Te pongo otro ejemplo: La rosa oriental, es un tema que casi nadie lo toca y lo tenemos en el repertorio. Algunos temas de Compay Segundo son muy divulgados, pero hay otros que casi no se conocen o no se oyen, uno de ellos es Pena me da. En las agrupaciones es muy común oír Lágrimas negras, de Matamoros, pero Juramento, también de Matamoros ya casi nadie lo canta, pero nosotros sí."

This book recounts the life story of Carlos Aldama, one of the masters of the batá drum, and through that story traces the history of batá culture as it traveled from Africa to Cuba and then to the United States. For the enslaved Yoruba, batá rhythms helped sustain the religious and cultural practices of a people that had been torn from its roots. Aldama, as guardian of Afro-Cuban music and as a Santería priest, maintains the link with this tradition forged through his mentor Jesus Pérez (Oba Ilu), who was himself the connection to the preserved oral heritage of the older generation. By sharing his stories, Aldama and his student Umi Vaughan bring to light the techniques and principles of batá in all its aspects and document the tensions of maintaining a tradition between generations and worlds, old and new.
