New Book: Daysi Rubiera Desafío al silencio [Challenging Silence]  10/12/2010 Repeating Silence: "Casa de las Américas presents “Mujeres en Línea,” a book presentation and discussion of Daysi Rubiera’s Desafío al silencio [Challenging Silence]. This book collects testimonies of battered women and their life stories, revealing the individual trajectories that led them to silence and breaking the silence about violence in the home. The panel discussion includes the participation of the author, Dr. Clotilde Proveyer (Professor at the University of Havana), poet Georgina Herrera, psychologist and editor of Social Sciences, Silvia Gutiérrez, and several of the interviewed women included in the book."

Chucho's Steps  9/26/2010 All About Jazz: "The odyssey of pianist Chucho Valdés has been well documented from his early days in Cuba playing in his father Bebo's Sabor de Cuba Orchestra to the founding of Irakere and on to new pastures as he infused fresh blood into Latin music and jazz. Valdez has never been fettered; his ideas are constantly evolving, finding avenues that give his music broad scope. He filters the narrowest of nooks and fills them with his majestic vision. He is truly a giant who has extended the boundaries of jazz with a presence that locks into the larger context as a pianist, a band leader and composer. Valdés versatility shines resplendently on this CD. His compositions use a wide canvas on which he splashes a whirl of colors that spin headily or mark open spaces with deep daubs. The whole comes into sharp focus in his approach to the piano. Brimming with ideas that seem to swoop out with every touch of the keys, he can open a flood gate or lay back and play a temperate and soulful refrain."

Miami drummer to get national award  9/22/2010 Miami Herald: "Ezequiel Torres has made a life of celebrating his ancestors. And now the master Afro-Cuban drummer and artisan is one of nine artists to be celebrated across the United States, all recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship Award. It is the nation's highest honor for folk and traditional artists."

Desi Arnaz, The Hottest guy in Havana  9/21/2010 Cuba Now: "Desiderio Arnaz, the mayor of Santiago de Cuba in 1925, forbade the conga tune in that year’s carnival, but he was faced with the dirty trick of fate after his son, named after him, made that rhythm famous in the United States one decade later."

Optimism Is No Sheer Folly  9/21/2010 Cuba Now: "After some time with the bands Sonido Contemporáneo and Síntesis, Menéndez, still unsatisfied, decided to create his own project. He wanted to fuse everything, to create a sound delta of stylistic convergence, one never before attempted: jazz, rock, son, traditional trova, the new song, funk, blues and even Cuban dancing music like bolero and danzón. And thus Mezcla came to light in 1985. The rest... a career with almost a dozen records, packed theatres, European and North American tours. Carlos Santana, who keeps the complete collection of the group, said that Mezcla, was “the cleanest and freshest water he ever tasted.”

Among the film's many treats is Garcia playing the bongos with Cachao."

PRESECIA CHINA EN EL SINCRETISMO RELIGIOSO AFROCUBANO  9/20/2010 Ministerio Shango Eyeife: publicado en febrero, 2009 - "Hacia la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, Cuba fue escenario de una notable presencia de chinos que al ser incorporados a los campos de faenas junto a los negros africanos crearon entre sí un fuerte intercambio cultural-religioso que les permitió comparar y asociar los elementos comunes de sus creencias, dando lugar a un fenómeno antropológico conocido por sincretismo cultural. El culto espiritual que los chinos de la Cuba colonial rendían a sus antepasados los emparentaban a las creencias escatológicas que los negros africanos sustentaban sobre la “otra vida”. Desde los albores de IFA en el Nuevo Mundo, los chinos han tenido su propia tierra, la Filaní o tierra de los babalawos chinos, de donde proceden los famosos awoses el Chino El Tanke y el Chino Poey, que ineludiblemente son nombrados por los babaláwos cubanos, en un rápido pase de lista a sus muertos ancestrales o rito llamado moyugba. Uno de los grandes fundadores del sacerdocio adivinatorio de IFA en nuestra Isla, Remigio Herrera, sepultado en 1905, llevaba el curioso nombre religioso de Adechina."

Figueroa  9/11/2010 Jiribilla: "A 11 años de la desaparición física de Belkis Ayón, el libro NKAME, se presentó en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana. El proyecto, surgido poco tiempo después del deceso de la gran grabadora cubana, estuvo dirigido por la que fuera además su amiga y colaboradora Cristina Vives y su hermana Katia Ayón como Estate. Hoy, 300 páginas recogen la obra y la vida de Belkis Ayón. Ensayos a cargo de José Veigas, David Mateo, Lázara Menéndez y la propia Cristina Vives, manuscritos, así como casi la totalidad de su obra —245 piezas recopiladas cuidadosamente a lo largo de estos años y en diversas latitudes—, se pusieron en manos de los investigadores, especialistas y críticos nacionales e internacionales con el fin de elaborar el catálogo que se nos ofrece."

Wynton Marsalis-led NY jazz band to travel to Cuba  9/9/2010 AP: "New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is traveling to Cuba next month for a series of concerts in Havana with bandleader Wynton Marsalis. The trip will be the first for the jazz band. The ensemble will perform several concerts from Oct. 5 to 9. Later in the month Jazz at Lincoln Center will produce the Afro-Cuban Jazz Celebration, featuring concerts in New York City."

I am not aware of any other articles she has written. The article also contains historic photographs of the old "Clave y Guaguancó" by Mário García Joya, "Mayito," who also had a distinguished career in Cuban cinema and now lives in Los Angeles. Some of them we have seen before in a book by Olavo Alén Rodríguez, but others are new, such as this one of Agustín "el Bongocero" Gutiérrez."

It was Nick Gold’s original idea for the Buena Vista Social Club, a star collaboration between Malian and Cuban musicians. Thirteen years ago, a story of lost passports meant that the African musicians never arrived in Havana but, nevertheless other recordings were made."

From Jewish Roots in Brooklyn, a Sizzling Salsa Star  8/13/2010 NYT: "He [Larry Harlow] enrolled at Brooklyn College but eventually took off for Havana, where he attended music classes by day and hung out in clubs and dance halls at night. During that sojourn in the late 1950s, “I became salsified, totally absorbed into the Latin culture,” he said. “The music wasn’t called salsa yet, but I became an Afro-Cuban nut, just studying the history and the old photographs and going to see Beny Moré, Orquesta Riverside and all those people in person.” Returning to New York just as Fidel Castro came to power, he resumed playing as a sideman until forming his own orchestra, which had a distinctively brassy sound that paired trumpets and trombones with his percussive piano."

Cuban-Kongo societies of affliction, in Havana collectively referred to as “Palo,” stake their claim to influence others in and through these entities."

Yoruba por Flamenco estreno de la Compañía Flamenca ECOS  7/1/2010 Cuba Escena: "La Compañía Flamenca ECOS, que dirige el primer bailarín y coreógrafo Danny Villalonga, estrenará Yoruba por Flamenco hoy jueves 1ero. de julio a las 7:00 PM en la Sala Teatro del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. La dirección artística es de la primera bailarina Ana Rosa Meneses y la dirección musical del cantaor Miguel Chávez, ambos han invitado a artistas del Conjunto Folclórico Nacional de Cuba para mostrar los puntos de comunión existentes entre estas dos culturas… Yoruba por Flamenco pretende mostrar la afinidad existente entre la música flamenca y la yoruba. Ayón, a lithographer, explored Afro-Cuban religion. Her worked combined the myth of Sikan and the traditions of the Abakuá, a men’s secret society. She committed suicide at the age of 32. Mendive, who also emerged from the revolutionary road, has received numerous awards for his work. He has participated in many group and solo art exhibitions in Cuba and Europe. Almoguea is known for painting brightly coloured, politically probing works from his government-owned potato stand. A self-taught photographer, Peña explores the problems of racial and social minorities in his art. His works are part of private collections in Cuba, Italy, the United States, Switzerland, Belgium and Argentina, among other countries. In all, 26 artists will participate in the exhibition, which will show about 80 works. They include the internationally acclaimed artists Joe Bedía, Yoan Capote, Carlos Garaicoa, Armando Mariño, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Elio Rodríguez, Douglas Pérez and Roberto Diago. “The City is proud to be part of such an event that will bring the Cuban touch to our doorstep, and that our citizens will be able to share this wonderful and unique experience,” it said."

Van van ofrecerá 70 conciertos en Estados Unidos  11/28/2009 Granma: "Juan Formell y los Van Van, la orquesta de salsa más importante de Cuba en cuatro décadas, realizará 70 conciertos a lo largo y ancho de Estados Unidos en los próximos meses. Juan Formell y los Van VanLa extensa gira se planeó en tres etapas desde el 2010 y podría extenderse hasta el 2011, dijo Formell durante una conferencia de prensa el viernes tras la presentación de un documental sobre la historia del grupo. Incluso se pretende que “una o dos” de las presentaciones de los populares Van Van sean en Miami, donde reside buen número de emigrados cubanos, pero también extremistas que a finales de los 90 intentaron sabotear conciertos de la agrupación y agredieron a sus integrantes. “Miami ha cambiado mucho de hace 10 años para aquí”, comentó el músico para quien la situación es más “favorable” para programar un concierto sin que haya “tanta agresividad”."

Legendary Cuban Group Plays SF  11/23/2009 KTVU: "Founded by Pineiro in 1927, Septeto Nacional would become the standard bearer for son as the prolific songwriter penned numerous hits for the group, drawing invitations to play internationally including the Ibero American Fair in Seville, Spain, and the 1933 World Exposition in Chicago. By then, Septeto Nacional had earned such fans as composer George Gershwin who became friends with Pineiro during a visit to Cuba and even quoted one of the bandleader’s songs in his “Cuban Overture.” The Septeto Nacional`s turn-over in musicians was so fast that one scarcely knew who to expect on stage when the group performed live. Pineiro actually left his own septet for financial reasons with Lazaro Herrera taking his place. Septeto Nacional only managed to stay afloat for another two years, finally disbanding in 1937. However, the popularity of the band would lead to future reformations that by the late 1950s would become permanent."

Cuban Musical Pioneers Celebrate an Island’s Soul  11/23/2009 NYT: "There’s no antiquarian dust on Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro, the Cuban band that got started in 1927 and performed on Thursday night at S.O.B.’s on its first American tour in 76 years. The septet was a pioneer of the Cuban son (a dance style; son means sound), which is a foundation of modern salsa in this hemisphere and of Congolese soukous in Africa. The Septeto, which has replaced all its musicians through the years — Piñeiro died in 1969 — still plays the Piñeiro repertory. Its Cuban son, and its rumbas and boleros, are music of transparency, tensile strength and phantom drive. Piñeiro’s innovation was to add trumpet to the guitars, percussion and voices of previous son groups, bringing songs an ever-changing countermelody and prefiguring salsa’s horn sections. Piñeiro may well have named salsa music with his 1928 song “Échale Salsita” (meaning “Throw a little sauce on it”), which started the septet’s first set at S.O.B.’s."

"He created a genre called rumba son that added the clave (a two-bar rhythmic pattern that anchors Afro-Cuban rhythm) to the son. In doing that, he brought in the elements of Africa that drew from his own roots in the Santeria Abakua religion."

After 76 years, a return engagement for Cuba's Septeto Nacional  11/4/2009 NY Daily News: "Cuba’s Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro, a revered 83-year-old son ensemble that last played in the U.S. at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933, is making a grand return to the Bronx on Saturday. “It means a lot to go to the U.S. to make our contribution to Cuba’s traditional music,” bongo player and producer Frank (El Matador) Oropesa, who joined the Septeto 15 years ago, said from ­Havana last week. Oropesa, 49, is part of the fourth generation of musicians who have kept the Septeto going for more than 80 years, drawing on the repertoire of more than 600 themes from their founder, Cuban son master Ignacio Piñeiro, who died in 1968. “We retain the same anthological songs that became a symbol of those times, like ‘Échale Salsita,’ ‘Bardo,’ ‘Esas No Son Cubanas’ ... and we are going there to surrender all our energy for Cuban music,” Oropesa added. After Saturday’s concert at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, the seven musicians, a dancer and a sound technician will travel to San Juan, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Diego."

Cuban musicians get U.S. encore  11/3/2009 MS NBC: "Cuban diva Omara Portuondo will heat up the stage at the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards during a rare U.S. appearance this Thursday. Dubbed the queen of Cuban vocals, Portuondo will be presenting an award during the televised show and her latest CD, "Gracias," has been nominated in the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category."
