All Female Hip-Hop Concert To Rock Cuba  12/15/03 CubaNet: "Cuba will play host to the first all women's hip-hop concert this month, the first such event to take place on the island. The concert, titled "Proven Presence" will feature Cuban rappers Esencia, Oye Habana, Maryoris, Las positivas and Las crudas. Speaker relates Cuba to U.S. culture  11/20/03 Crimson White, Univ of Alabama: on a lecture by Yale's Robert Ferris Thompson, who has written on African survivals in the cultures of the Americas: "Thompson said he would use the word 'liberation' to describe the conglomeration of various aspects of the mambo dance as it translates into American culture. He said mambo, in contrast to all other forms of dance utilized in the early 20th century, caused men and women to dance separately and was meant to liberate men and women from each other. Thompson connected Alabama football coaching legend Paul "Bear" Bryant to the dance by noting that different aspects of football - such as the stutter step, the touchdown follies and spiking the football - can be related to the mambo. Thompson also said the origin of the high-five comes from dance. "[The high-five] is at the heart of American athletics, but the high-five is from the conga word for ecstasy," Thompson said. "When your hand is up and the hands are flayed, and if I have just made a touchdown, I am ecstatic." "

Havana’s 8th annual fine arts Biennial  11/13/03 Radio Progresso: "These days all of Havana is an immense gallery where you can observe the most surprising exhibits of contemporary art: from paintings, sculptures, engravings, and photography, to actual performances and installations. The Biennial’s motto, “Art Along with Life” is not an empty slogan, because together with the classic exhibits of paintings and sculptures in galleries and museums, the active and demanding presence of art has rushed into everyday life. How is that? You ask. At the Biennial there are shows like the one at the Museum of Fine Arts titled “From Picasso to Keith Harring,” where you can see paintings and engravings by Picasso, Modigliani, Matisse, Man Ray, Joseph Kossuth, Barbara Kruger, and May Stevens. But what the non aficionados – those who may never visit a gallery or a museum – are talking about are the performances in public places, interacting with people on the streets. For example, at the Solar de la California, a very modest rooming house in Havana to which Cuban salsa singer Issac Delgado dedicated a song, there is an exhibit by important Cuban artists, such as Mendive, Choco and Diago, and the tenants participate actively in debates, backing the show with their permanent attendance."

8TH HAVANA BIENNIAL Taking the pulse of contemporary art  11/3/03 Granma: "No media campaign, no withdrawal of finance on the part of official European foundations, or any direct threats to artists could stop it going ahead. The 8th Havana Biennial has been opened in the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, a Universal Heritage Site, with the presence of more than 100 artists and some 750 curators, dealers, gallery owners and museum directors, mostly from the United States. That was pointed out to the accredited press by Rafael Acosta, president of the Visual Arts Council, during a meeting in the Museum of Fine Arts Theater, who also explained that after the campaign unleashed by the Venezuelan reactionary press in the summer and the withdrawal of funding from Dutch and German foundations, the boycott of the Biennial took the form of direct pressure on artists, including threatening some of them with loss of funds for their projects."

Dancing With the Spirits - Rare Afro-Cuban music highlights DePaul conference  9/16/03 Centerstage, Chicago: "Led by master drummer Román Diaz, the group began with ritual a cappella singing that recounted the myths of Abakuá, a secret male society in Cuba that originates from Nigeria's Cross River region. Later, Omi Odara played complex, interlocking rhythms on four sacred drums during the masquerade procession of the ireme dancer, a spectacle rarely seen outside Cuba or Nigeria. The music of Santeria, the Afro-Cuban religion rooted in the Yoruba culture, opened the second day. Dancer Félix "Pupi" Insua performed as several of the orichas (deities representing forces of nature) including Elegua, the Trickster. As he feverishly danced around the conference room to the intense call-and-response singing and drumming of the group, Elegua urged attendees to get up and move, and in seconds virtually the entire room was grooving with the Guardian of the Crossroads."

The mozambique made its debut on the July 6, 1963 on the "Ritmos de Juventud" (Youth Rhythms) TV program with Pedro Izquierdo (Pello el Afrokán) at its head. Dressed in an impeccable white drill suit and a white coney fur cap, he was surrounded by dancers demonstrating the new dance and a set with five drummers sounding like a piano."

Son de Cuba to perform at fund-raising event  9/10/03 Smoky Mountain News, NC: “Music in the Mountains Fest” takes on an international flavor this year with headliner Son de Cuba, an Afro-Cuban dance band founded in 1999 by Cuban native Joe Rothenberg-Lapaz… Son de Cuba is making a name for itself by performing at festivals and clubs throughout Western North Carolina over the past four years, including appearances at the Orange Peel in Asheville and Founders Hall in Charlotte. They’re scheduled to appear as a headliner at Asheville’s “Fiesta Latina” on Oct. 4. Other upcoming dates include Davidson’s “Concert on the Green” series on Sept. 14 and the 13th Annual Latin Music Festival of Charlotte on Oct. 5."

Recorrido de Manuel Mendive por países de Africa  9/9/03 AfroCubaWeb: "Continuando el recorrido por Nigeria, Mendive permaneció en la ciudad de Osogbo, en la cual tuvo lugar el Festival de Osun, uno de los eventos religiosos y culturales más significativos e importantes de Nigeria. Mendive y los cubanos babaoloshas e iyaoloshas que lo acompañaron en el recorrido, conocieron de cerca la emoción de visitar el templo de Osun, y contemplar cientos de miles de personas, bellamente ataviados para rendir homenaje a la deidad en la floresta que rodea el río Osun, donde se le hacían ofrendas a la orisha y se podía apreciar muchas personas agrupadas cantando y danzando al compás del ritmo de diversos instrumentos de percusión. En Osogbo la ciudad se llenó de vehículos con banderolas y mensajes alusivos al Festival de Osun. Ese día se reunieron en torno a Osun, africanos, afroamericanos y afrocaribeños, hermanados por la cultura y por la tradición de la cultura yoruba presente en el Nuevo Mundo. Posteriormente, Manuel Mendive realizó una acción performática que constituyó la entrega de una pintura suya al río Osun, en cuya obra se representaba a Osun y a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de Cuba. También en Osogbo asistió al festejo de Shangó, presidido por el Oní Shango Sangodare, destacado artista de Osogbo, el cual propició la visita de Mendive a los templos más importantes que se encuentran en esta ciudad. En Ilé-Ifé, la ciudad sagrada de los yorubas, acompañado por el Director de Patrimonio de Nigeria, Eluyemi Omotoso, el artista visitó los templos de Oduduwa y de Obatalá. A prestigious meeting promoting Third World art  9/9/03 Granma: "At a press conference, Acosta announced that 150 projects by artists from 47 countries will be on show from November 1-December 15, along with work by eight Cuban guest artists and the group Enema y el Departamento de Intervenciones Públicas. He explained that the Biennial, whose theme this year is Art and Life, is taking place "even though European foundations that have traditionally helped us have withdrawn, pressurized by anti-Cuban campaigns and measures generated by the European Union." Hilda María Rodríguez, director of the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center that is organizing and sponsoring the event, spoke mainly on the subject of selecting submissions, pointing out the seriousness and rigor that curators always use, even visiting other countries to view work. Hip Hop in Havana  9/9/03 Radio Progresso: "In spite of the August heat in the Cuban capital, rap fans were all over the 9th annual Havana 2003 Hip Hop Festival. The event was held in several of the city’s theaters with the participation of 60 groups – 40 locals and 20 from abroad. The Unites States, Colombia, Canada, Mexico, Italy, United Kingdom and Switzerland were the invited countries. Speaking of local groups, there are so many that some critics claim that there are 400 of them, and others say that Cuban hip hop groups number more than 1,000. Some are known internationally, like Orishas, and others are very popular locally, like Free Holes Negros, Eddy K – who is well known for his theme song written for a popular weekly TV program, “The Other Geography”.
