Cuba in 1968 4/29/2018 Jacobin: by Samuel Farber - "Thanks to this
apparent openness, neither the foreign guests nor many of the invited
Cuban intellectuals suspected that an important group of black Cuban
intellectuals and artists — among them Rogelio Martínez Furé, Nancy
Morejón, Sara Gómez, Pedro Pérez-Sarduy, Nicolás Guillén Landrián, and
Walterio Carbonell — had been excluded. According to the Black Cuban
author Carlos Moore, the group had been meeting to discuss the Cuban
government’s lack of action against racism, a problem that the
revolutionary leaders claimed to have solved with the abolition of racial
segregation in the early sixties. In response to a rumor that these
intellectuals had drafted a position paper on race and culture in Cuba for
the congress, Minister of Education José Llanusa Gobel called them in for
a private meeting a couple of days before the event began. After listening
to their critiques, Llanusa accused them of being “seditious” and told
them that the “revolution” would not allow them to “divide” the Cuban
people along racial lines. He explained that the very idea of their “black
manifesto” was a provocation for which they would have to recant or face
the consequences."

dancer trained in the tradition of classical European ballet. He
masterfully debunks the falsehood of another racist myth, that there can
be no middle ground in dance: whites in ballet and blacks in contemporary
modern dance or folklore. Many may not have reflected on that painful
hybridity in Cuba whose origins lie in a different way of viewing the

expression of the Afro-Cuban liturgy invoked by a majority of island

Times: "Pedro Perez Sarduy, a Cuban journalist, poet and novelist, has
been talking about Afro-Cuban aspirations on his latest speaking tour of
the United States. He gave a series of speeches in Seattle recently. I
spoke with him after he talked to a group of students at Seattle
University. Black Cubans, he said, have to make things work in Cuba.
"Black Cubans don't have anyplace to go into exile." White Cubans have
made a home for themselves in Miami, and in Spain, but where, he asks, can
black Cubans blend in? Where can a people, whose culture is part European
and part African and even a little Chinese, go and feel at home, except at
home? Sarduy said that when he first came to the United States, many
people weren't quite sure how to classify a man with dark skin who speaks
Spanish. They had a different image of who was Cuban. Of the 3 million
Cubans who live abroad, 2.5 million are of primarily Spanish descent, he

poeta, escritor y periodista cubano
Pedro Pérez Sarduy vive en Inglaterra desde 1981. Se inició en la
revista universitaria Alma Mater y fue Premio Casa de las Américas, 1966 y
Julián del Casal, 1967. Su obra en radio fue conocida a través de Radio
Rebelde y de los años en que fuera corresponsal de la BBC de Londres. Su
interés por los temas afrocubanos lo llevaron a impartir conferencias en
Universidades de Europa y Estados Unidos. Su primera novela, Las criadas
de La Habana fue presentada durante la XI Feria Internacional del Libro de
La Habana. Pérez Sarduy en su más reciente visita a Cuba y de paso por la
redacción de La Jiribilla compartió algunas opiniones, a la vez que
reconocía en ese volver a la Isla, “el placer de quien regresa a su tierra

had no particular regard for blacks, had, with the exodus of white Cubans
to America, entrusted the civil service, the military officer corps, and
much of the middle class to blacks. It was one eason I'd been convinced
the Miami Cubans were kidding themselves to dream of a triumphal return to
power. Well, in truth I saw hardly any brown-skinned or black Cubans
running anything - not as managers or ministers or maitre d's, not even as
cashiers, clerks, or hotel maids. Black Cubans are in plentiful supply, as
a stroll through the poor sections of Havana will make clear. But all the
good jobs in this socialist paradise seem to go to people we used to
describe as ''light, bright, or damned near white.'' Ask nonblack Cubans
about this phenomenon, and they'll blink as though they've just noticed it
for the first time. There's just no color problem in Cuba, they'll
insist." The brothers here were not leading you astray: there is a marked
difference between the eurotourism sector, completely dominated by whites,
and other sectors of the economy, such as medicine, biotech, and even
politics where afrocubans have reached senior positions. See the writings

In Living Memory 6/1/2001 AfroCubaWeb: "I loved my Great-gran Sabue,
my mother’s gran, a lot. She wasn’t really called Sabue, that’s what I
called her because she didn’t like Cunduna, her real name, and to call her
Great-gran didn’t seem affectionate enough to me. She said she wasn’t
called Cunduna either, but she couldn’t remember her real name. That’s
why, rather than Cunduna or Great-gran, I preferred to call her Sabue, and
she seemed to like it, and because I was the only one who called her that.
Sabue lived down by the marsh, on the outskirts of Quemado de Güines, a
small rural town in the north of Las Villas province which had big sugar
cane plantations, and we lived in the provincial capital Santa Clara."
