Dear Promoters, Dear Friends, Maraca & Otra Vision is one of the few top-level Cuban bands based in Cuba who has been extensively touring in the United States from 1998, bringing with great impact their magnificent afro-Cuban music almost everywhere there in clubs, jazz and world music festivals at the highest level, and culminating with their Grammy Nomination last February for "Best salsa Album of the Year". I have been personally managing the band and booking Maraca's tours since 1999 ; especially regarding US tours, I work many months before not only on booking, but particularly on visas and immigration matters in coordination with San Fransisco-based lawyer Bill Martinez, the best lawyer in this field. For Maraca's next US tour scheduled for August and September 2003, I started to work on it in November 2002, and M. Martinez started to fill the papers for Maraca's visas last December 2002 that is to say 9 months before the beginning of the tour. In these difficult times due to the international crisis, and especially in the middle of tense relationships between the USA and Cuba, M. Martinez managed to get the approval notice (I-129) of the US State Department in Washington on February 4th. Until last year, the approval notice from Washington was the most "difficult" and the most important authorization so that Cuban musicians could be delivered their visas at the US Interest Section (USIS) in Havana - once the USIS got the original I-129, visas then would be delivered there few days after its reception . Unfortunately, visas are still pending for the band, despite the notice of approval for their tour given to the USIS in February 2003 ; at that point, the band still hasn't got thru security clearances. We've been getting the invariable answer from 6 months from the USIS in Havana : "Unfortunately, we can not provide you with an estimate as to when the administrative processing will be complete (...)." They offered no additional details on why this is so delayed. Bill Martinez has been working intensively with several Congressional offices, seeking supports and answers, but they were all being told the same thing also by the State Department: "be patient...you know, how it is with Cuba", as if this was news to us. For those of you who we've been working together for a long time without any difficulties and with great results, you may understand better the situation and our feelings toward it. Because we are now at deadlock, and we're experimenting on of the worst difficult moment of Maraca's professional career, after investing a lot of money in non refundable plane tickets, immigration and visas costs which have been paid long time in advanced in order to secure the US tour. We can't apologize, since we think we have done everything necessary and even much more to get all the bureaucracy done on time, but we are aware of the fact that you will also be suffering from this situation and the lack of response of the US administration. Some of you have already anticipated proposing to re-schedule Maraca's tour later in September/October 2003 - if the visas are issued, the validity should be the same as authorized by the US State Department, it is to say until October 6th , but we would understand if you don't have this possibility and if you shall cancel without rescheduling Maraca's show . Please fell free to give your opinion or suggestion on the situation at my e-mails maraca@wanadoo.fr and maraca@cubarte.cult.cu. And please, don't forget Cuban music and the marvelous people in Cuba ; we all need something from each other to become better and stronger, fighting against ignorance and obscurantism which are surprisingly very topical subjects in our greatest technological and communication era.

May 1998 For Immediate Release
MARACA Ahí Namá and Yambú Productions are proud to announce that Cuba's most prominent flautist, composer and arranger, Orlando "MARACA" Valle, will be touring the United States in August, and September 1998 [and again in 1999!]. Maraca began his professional career in 1987, with a trip to Panama, in the band of vocalist Bobby Carcassés. That same year, he became a member of Nueva Visión, the group led by the late Emiliano Salvador. And, in 1988, Maraca joined Chucho Vales' Irakere, with whom he spent six years as a flautist, keyboardist, composer and arranger. While performing with Irakere at the most notable jazz festivals and clubs throughout the world, Maraca gained the international recognition necessary to launch his solo career. In 1996, Maraca formed his own band, Otra Visión, with whom he recorded the album, HAVANA CALLING. The album was released October of that year in the United States. Havana Calling was regarded as one of the top ten recordings of 1996, and was praised by Latin music and jazz critics in the United States and Europe. In April of 1998, Ahí Namá and Maraca celebrated the release of Maraca's latest recording, SONANDO, featuring 1998 Grammy Award winners, David Sánchez, Compay Segundo, Barbarito Torres. Accompanied with his band, Otra Visión this versatile composer and arranger incorporates diverse, Cuban elements (i.e. descarga, guaracha, pregón son, and jazz fusion, to name a few) in this recording. Maraca has definitely succeeded in liberating the Cuban flute from the traditional charanga format, while elevating jazzy rhythms and Latin Styles to new, creative heights. We invite you to experience the sultry, tropical rhythms of today's Cuba. |
