He came to participate in the Jazz Plaza Festival, and in a double capacity: for a concert for two pianos with another great, Chucho Valdés, and as a member of the Latin Jazz SGAE Prize jury."

Up a rickety staircase in the Santo Suárez section is the hip-hop producer Pablo Herrera's home-recording studio. A Mambo King in His Twilight  11/28/2004 NYT: "Mr. Ensley, who turned 70 last week, has amassed in his East Tremont apartment an extraordinary collection of the mambo music that was performed at the Palladium and just about every other important Latin club in New York during mambo's heyday and in the decades since. The items, which include thousands of audiotapes plus videotapes and other material, fill two closets and line a whole side of the living room, while Latin music posters cover most of the walls. In this shrine to mambo, in fact, about the only hint that Mr. Ensley cares about anything else are the photos of his 26-year-old daughter, Onkeea. For years, Mr. Ensley has received many inquiries about his collection and, for the last few months, he has been negotiating their transfer to the Raices Latin Music Collection, a 16,000-item archive of Afro-Caribbean music based in the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in East Harlem. In April, Raices received a grant from the Ford Foundation to obtain and preserve the tapes."

Artist finds plenty of room in Castro's Cuba - Fuster defends revolution, but says he's free to criticize policies  10/6/2004 MSNBC: "Fuster is foremost an artist who is dedicated to his creations, a vast array of artwork from ceramics evoking the nation’s African roots, as represented in the Santeria religion, to whimsical paintings drawn from ordinary life in Cuba: commuters crowded inside creaky, smoke-belching buses, the ubiquitous dominoes games in backyards and street corners." This article fails to mention that Cuban art can legally be purchased by US citizens.

Cuban Percussionist Changuito Prepares Book On Congas  10/6/2004 Prensa Latina: "One of the most famous percussionists worldwide, Cuban musician Jose Luis Quintana (Changuito), is preparing a book with 103 basics for playing congas, he stated for Cuban weekly magazine Bohemia. Changuito, as pianist, director and compositor Felipe Dulzaides dubbed him in 1964, has deserved many awards, including the Five Star Award for his kettledrum method, granted by the US Warner Bros Studios, for which he worked in five educational videos. He is also one of the stars featured in "La rumba soy yo", Grammy award winner in 2001 to best folkloric production, not including the different nominations -accompanied or solo- for Latin Grammy."

Born in 1944 in Havana to a militant dock worker and a trade-unionist seamstress, Morejón was the first Afro-Cuban to graduate from Havana University, where she majored in French, and the first black woman poet to publish widely and be accepted as a professional writer, critic and translator."

The showing was held at the Audio Visual Room of the National Library, St Vincent Street, Port of Spain, but the venue proved too small for the crowd that turned up to view the film and the members of the committee were at a loss over what to do. Although the security officer continued to plead with officials of the committee to stop people from entering the library, they were still allowed in even though there was simply no accommodation. Many people were sitting on the window sills, in the aisles, on the floor before the stage and crowded at the back entrance, creating a hazard should any emergency have taken place."

Hip-hop not getting bad rap in Cuba - Some surprised by government's support of counterculture artists  7/10/2004 Dallas Morning News: "Take the case of Rodolfo Rensoli, 38, organizer of the first Cuban rap festival in 1995. His festival became an annual event. He continued promoting it until 2000, thinking the music could help change Cuban society. But the following year, he said, he was forced out by inept people who had more conservative views. "There are a lot of people who don't understand people like me," said Mr. Rensoli, founding member of a popular rap group, Grupo Uno."

Además he sido acompañado por grandes orquestas en Cuba, como el conjunto Casino. Adoro la música de Matamoros, Pacho Alonso, que constituyen mis ídolos. CONVERSACIÓN CON EL CIMARRÓN  7/8/2004 Jiribilla: "Este mulato tiene una muy humilde proyección y enseguida adelanta su dulce sencillez. Madelaine, al igual que otros muchos religiosos de las provincias orientales, trabaja a partir de referentes de la santería, el vodú y las diversas vertientes del espiritismo. Él, al decir de por allá, es un muy buen muertero… La Casa del Caribe, que a esta altura ha organizado veinticuatro ediciones del Festival, es, a mi juicio, la única institución cultural donde se le ha propiciado un espacio de respeto y tolerancia a las más significativas religiones populares de la zona oriental del país. En razón de ello en cada celebración de La fiesta del fuego, sesiona diariamente un taller abierto al público, donde hacen sus ritos los más respetados religiosos de allí. Quienes hayan tenido la oportunidad de asistir, habrán advertido, con independencia de que sea creyente o no, de que se trata de prácticas de ostensible seriedad, sin parentesco alguno con los simulacros con ánimo de lucro comercial que pueden con frecuencia confundir a los incautos."

LA HAZAÑA DE LA PERSISTENCIA  7/8/2004 Jiribilla: "Intelectuales, artistas populares y personalidades de la cultura de 21 países animaron la fiesta desarrollada en Santiago de Cuba del 3 al 9 de julio, conmemorado el bicentenario de la República Independiente de Haití. En el 2005, la Fiesta del Fuego se dedica a Venezuela. Solidaridad: palabra clave… La también llamada Fiesta del Fuego rindió homenaje a los 200 años de la proclamación de la República Independiente de Haití. Por esa nación habló el pintor James Alain Augustin, quien expresó: "Este es el único país donde he visto como se respeta y se quiere a la cultura de mi país. Quiero dar las gracias"."

The ideas of Marcus Mosiah Garvey were of great interest to the later to be formed Rasta movement in Jamaica, therefore he was a predecessor to the Rastas. Artists from 23 countries at Fire Festival  7/6/2004 Cuba Now: "Around 500 representatives from 23 countries, including Canada and the United States, will participate in the 24th Fire Festival, to take place in Santiago de Cuba, July 3 through 9. The program includes a traditional colloquium, The Caribbean that Binds Us, this time focused on the Haitian Revolution and its repercussion in the country and abroad, as well as workshops to deal with topics related to Franco-Haitian culture. Moreover, a bust of Haitian independence hero Toussaint Louverture will be inaugurated."

Next generation after Buena Vista Social Club  7/6/2004 Cuba Now: "The man who put the Grammy Award winning project Buena Vista Social Club artists together, calling them one by one, Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, will launch a new experimental album titled The Next Generation."

INAUGURAN HOY EN CUBA COLOQUIO INTERNACIONAL NICOLÁS GUILLÉN  7/5/2004 Jiribilla: "El IV Coloquio Internacional de Música y Poesía Nicolás Guillén se inaugurará hoy en el Aula Magna de la Universidad de La Habana con la participación de investigadores de la cultura caribeña y latinoamericana de Francia, Canadá, España y Grecia."

Mostrarán folklor del Caribe en desfile inaugural de Fiesta del Fuego  7/5/2004 Jiribilla: "Decenas de agrupaciones y solistas procedentes del Caribe y otras regiones, mostrarán el folklor de sus pueblos durante el Desfile Inaugural del XXIV Festival del Caribe, que se celebra hoy en las principales calles de esta urbe. Entre los participantes se hallan Kondjema (folklórica) y Ced Ride (musical), de Curazao, Danza Hawaiana (folklórica), Roxana Lara (concertista de piano), Rosa Nivia Moguell (folklorista), de México, y Danza Aruba (folklórica), de Aruba. También desfilarán el dúo de guitarras Mandrágora, de Brasil y Danza Trass (folklórica), de Martinica, entre otros. La mayor cantidad de participantes (casi 500 en representación de 80 agrupaciones cubanas) proceden de esta isla, entre ellas, 25 agrupaciones musicales (tríos, septetos, orquestas, dúos y cuartetos), seis grupos vocales, igual número de espectáculos infantiles y ocho grupos portadores de la cultura africana en Cuba."

So it's understandable that Celia: My Life, the singer's as-told-to autobiography with writer Ana Cristina Reymundo, doesn't fulfill all the expectations one might have for the authorized story of the legendary "Queen of Salsa," who died of cancer a year ago at age 78. What the anecdote-laden, first-person account lacks in sophisticated historical perspective is outweighed by how effectively it reflects the singer's exuberant spirit."
