The inauguration of the Museum of Black Civilizations and its exponents in
the countries of the African Diaspora in the new world takes place in
December 2018 in Dakar, Senegal.
The project will be an approach to Africa as motherland, showing the
particular aspects of the cultures of the different ethnic groups, for
each region of sub-Saharan Africa, counting on the proposals that support
from the anthropological, ethnographic and artistic point of view the
characteristics and specifics of each ethnic group and their artistic
expressions.
In this museum, a retrospective vision is proposed from the past and how
they emerge in the periods of European colonization, up to the present
with a relationship to the history of slave trafficking,
the thousands of Africans transported violently outside their territorial
domains until the processes of decolonization, the beginning of the
processes of independence of each town until the present day.
All the countries of the African Diaspora in the Caribbean will be
represented with their practices and religious cults, examples of their
musical instruments, their different rhythms and expressions in the
plastic arts.
Concerning the practices of the Yoruba religion through the cult of Osha
and of Ifa, in the western and central regions, the visual
corpus and the social-religious imagination that transformed the vision of
the cabildos of the black nations and passed on to the house-temples will
be presented.
Likewise, from the eastern region of Cuba, the exhibits show their
particular characteristics seen through the Afro-Haitian dances and spoken
word whose presence is evident in the practices of vodu and its variations
inserted in the eastern region of Cuba, whose imaginary form part of
traditional Cuban folk culture.
From the largest of the Antilles, artists
Manuel Mendive, Santiago Rodríguez Olazábal,
Roberto Diago, and 27 other
artists as well as
socio-cultural aspects will be represented, showing various performances
of Manuel Mendive through videos and documentaries throughout his artistic
career.
Note on images of Mendibe
The abaolorios, which are representative of the artistic work of Manuel
Mendive, are sculptural objects that represent the resguardos, which were
the small bags that were placed in the clothes of the very small children
as a protection to ward off the negative energies - protections against
the evil eye, which was accompanied by jet, coral and eyes of Santa Lucia,
small objects.
In these pieces the artist wanted to magnify its dimensions and
incorporate elements such as cowries, feathers and beads, giving these
sculptures a plastic sense that is related to the symbolic function of the
protection in its original sense and function.

Museum of Black Civilisations in Dakar to foster the ‘dialogue of cultures’ 12/10/2018 Star2: with
Video - "Both Bocoum and the museum’s lead scientist Ibrahima Thioub said the
collection, which includes megaliths dating back more than 1,700 years ago
alongside contemporary art, would both honour the past and look to the future.
It should not be “a place of nostalgia but a crucible of creativity, a factory
of self-esteem,” said Thioub, rector of Dakar’s Cheikh-Anta-Diop University."
Sprawling Museum of Black Civilizations Opens in Senegal 12/10/2018 Smithsonian: "Now
more than ever, it seems possible that the empty space could one day be taken up
by African artifacts currently held in European institutions. In late November,
French President Emmanuel Macron received a landmark report—written by French
art historian Bénédicte Savoy and the Senegalese writer Felwine
Sarr—recommending that he move forward with his plan to fully repatriate African
artworks taken without consent from their countries of origin during the
colonial era. Senegal was one of the first countries to subsequently request the
large-scale return of its looted objects."

the World 12/6/2018 OK Africa: "The museum has been several years in the
making, with leaders after Senghor putting investment into the arts on the back
burner in the face of economic and political challenges. In 2011, President
Abdoulaye Wade laid the foundation for the museum, but construction was halted
due to a political transition, adds CGTN Africa News. The project was put into
