Raúl Domínguez Valdés (Kimbo)Kimbo is an AfroCuban community leader in Barrio Marina, a largely AfroCuban neighborhood in Matanzas, Cuba. In that role, he establishes relationships, working with people in his community to help them solve their daily life problems, connecting them with government agencies if appropriate. He has also started a yearly carnival cultural festival, focusing on the rhumba music and dance and dress in Matanzas. A major part of his community organizing involves issues of racism, on which he works closely with the Red Barrial Afrodescendiente in Havana.
La Marina in Matanzas is one of the neighborhoods that is richest in
AfroCuban cuture in all of Cuba. Many members of the
famed rumba group
Muñequitos de Matanzas and
the equally famous folkloric group
Afro-Cuba de Matanzas live there and
the Muñequitos rehearse there. |
