Film shoot news, Sisters of the Heart

The documentary project, "Sisters of the Heart", is moving forward slowly
but with beautiful experiences for the investigation stage. During this
hot Cuban summer I dedicated myself to visit Matanzas and Camaguey
Provinces, two places where the Oblates opened their school for Black
girls. To our great surprise we were able to talk with some students,
Black and mixed race Cuban women who remembered the quality of the
education they received. Yes they were Catholic schools, but the principal
goal was to prepare them for professional lives.
You can't imagine the reaction of these Black Cuban mothers and grand
mothers when they heard that someone was working on their story. One
announced, " I've been thinking that I was going to die without telling
the story of this beautiful chapter in my childhood and adolescence." It
must be remembered that the Oblate Sisters of Providence opened in Cuba
the only very important option for social advancement of the Black society
in Cuba. Because of this, Black Cuban social clubs and groups supported
their work as their daughters attended these prestigious schools.
The voices of these women can teach us about that Cuban society. The life
and aspirations of AfroCubans before the Triumph of the Revolution of 1959
is basic to the film project. For example, we are discovering in this
investigation/ study that the principal body of the Oblate Sisters were
Black as were some teachers and instructors in their own schools. But they
accepted white children who were in need of protection and education.
However, there were white families that didn't want their daughters mixing
with large numbers of Blacks in the Oblate schools even though they knew
the quality and prestige of those tireless educators . Many anecdotes,
memories, tears and joy are in the voices of these Afro-Cuban women. But
we have to hurry to capture these images these conversations because their
ages range from 75-80 and 90.

We have already opened the investigation in Matanzas and Camaguey; in both
places we have to go back and deepen our research before filming. We need
to search in newspapers, magazines and in the archives of the churches. It
is the only way that data can appear, information, interesting anecdotes
that can enrich this audiovisual product. Why so much work? Because this
story, these voices have been ignored, forgotten and there is no guide, no
book that marks the meaning of the investigation. This has happened not
only with THE OBLATES, this has happened in general with the life,
evolution, and struggle of blacks in CUBA. This story of THE OBLATES we
are investigating: history of the buildings of the schools, characters
that promoted the opening of these schools, location of photos and other
important documents. And something that can not be missing: THE CONTEXT OF
THIS CUBAN RACIST REPUBLIC OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
I am working with several researchers whose job is to search, search
newspapers, magazines for some news, sometimes they have to stop due to
the high degree of contamination of the original materials (in Cuba we
worked with newspapers and magazines from the early 1900s, no
digitization) . A GREAT OBSTACLE: THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CUBA does not
have the archives of THE CATHOLIC CHURCH in CUBA available to be
consulted. This makes things even more difficult, but my visit to the
CONVENT OF THE OBLATES in BALTIMORE in May, 2017, was the main impetus for
the project and thanks to the collaboration and the generosity of many
people I could be the whole month there with the access to their files.
The music, the songs with their suggestive lyrics are part of the
narrative in my projects. It is something that inspires me and decides in
many cases the essences and the rhythm of the information. Little by
little I started to call in the VOCAL GROUP BAOBAB
to introduce them to the theme. In my visit to Camaguey, I was
able to talk with EBENEZER SAMA with whom I already worked very
successfully on the main theme of my documentary
REEMBARQUE. Recently, in LA HABANA, I had a meeting with TONY AVILA,
an excellent singer and author of MATANZAS, although there is no
commitment yet established. I am only presenting the theme of SISTERS OF
HEART to these musicians to know their interest, sensitivity and
disposition. I am going to do the same thing with the singer, composer and
poet GERARDO ALFONSO.
There is a lot of work to do and I am at the forefront, directing and
planning and evaluating all the details that can serve for the
documentary, something that is interesting, educational and never boring.
BUT ALSO, I do not forget some important details that have to be planned
from now on to return to BALTIMORE, to link to the historians of BALTIMORE
who are going to narrate the passages of the life of MOTHER MARY LANGE. I
am also depending on the organization of that visit that should be between
the months of April and May, 2018.
RECENTLY, SISTER JOSELLA, one of
the black Cuban nuns who still lives in Baltimore, visited her family in
LA HAVANA. And thanks to the funds we had at that time we were able to
film a meeting with her in the HAVANA NEIGHBORHOOD OF COLON, where I live
and there the people spontaneously took their children to be blessed by
SISTER JOSELLA. We have images that will be part of the documentary. These
are the things that can happen even without a complete budget planning:
spontaneous, unique things that happen or can happen; this is documentary
cinema - wide, open. I did not interview at that time, only the images are
going to talk and of course an interview that I later did with SISTER
JOSELLA. But curiosity was in the eyes of the people who had no hesitation
in surrounding her: who was this black woman with a traditional habit that
covered her whole body? Do the Oblate Sisters exist? Who are the OBLATES?
People in CUBA and AFRICAN DIASPORA need to know this fascinating story.
We will continue working with passion and patience, do not forget us. And
after the ISLAND OF CUBA recovers a little from HURACAN IRMA, the next
trip will be to SANTIAGO DE CUBA. The only place in the country where the
school that the OBLATES founded has the name of the founder of the
congregation: MOTHER MARY LANGE ACADEMY.
A great hug and my infinite appreciation to all the collaborators who are
contributing to this great dream, this new project, the last documentary
of this series that I call with much pride " Stories and Images of Our
People".

EL PROYECTO DOCUMENTAL HERMANAS DE CORAZON AVANZA LENTAMENTE PERO
CON EXPERIENCIAS MUY HERMOSAS PARA EL PROCESO DE INVESTIGACION. En este
caluroso verano de Cuba me dedique a visitar las provincias de Matanzas y
Camaguey. Dos lugares donde LAS OBLATAS abrieron sus escuelas para las
ninas negras.Y para gran sorpresa nuestra pudimos conversar con antiguas
alumnas.Mujeres cubanas negras y meztizas que recuerdan la calidad de la
ensenanza que alli recibian.Si, eran escuelas catolicas pero lo principal
era prepararse para la vida profesional.
NO pueden imaginar la alegria de estas madres y abuelas negras cubanas
cuando se enteraron de que alguien se estaba ocupando de esta historia.
Una me declaro: "pensaba que me iba a morir sin hablar de este capitulo
tan hermoso de mi infancia y adolescencia". Hay que recordar que LAS
HERMANAS OBLATAS DE LA PROVIDENCIA abrieron en CUBA una opcion unica MUY
importante dentro de la estrategia del avance en la sociedad de los negros
en cuba. Por esa razon muchas SOCIEDADES NEGRAS en CUBA apoyaron su
trabajo porque sus hijas asistian a esas escuelas de tanto prestigio. Las
voces de estas mujeres, lo que pueden contar de aquella sociedad cubana ,
la vida y las aspiraciones de los negros antes del triunfo de LA
REVOLUCION DE 1959, es fundamental para el proyecto. Por ejemplo
descubrimos en esta investigacion que el el cuerpo principal de monjas de
LAS OBLATAS , eran negras, algunas maestras e instructoras de sus propias
escuelas; pero ellas aceptaban ninas blancas que estaban necesitadas de
amparo y educacion. Sin embargo, eran las familias blancas los que no
querian que sus hijas se mezclaran con tantos negros en esas escuelas de
LAS OBLATAS aunque conocian de la calidad y el prestio de estas
incansables educadoras.
 Muchas anecdotas, recuerdos, lagrimas, alegria en estas voces de
afrocubanas pero tenemos que apurarnos en captar esas imagenes, esos
dialogos porque sus edades oscilan entre los 75-80 y 90 anos.
Ya abrimos la investigacion en Matanzas y Camaguey, en ambos lugares hay
que volver y profundizar mas antes de filmar. Hacer una labor de busqueda
en periodicos, revistas y en los archivos de las iglesias.Es de la unica
manera que pueden aparecer los datos , informaciones , anecdotas
interesantes que pueden enriquecer este producto audiovisual. Por que tanto
trabajo? Porque esta historia, estas voces han sido ignoradas, olvidadas y
no hay una guia, un libro que marque el sentido de la investigacion. ASI
ha pasado no solo con LAS OBLATAS , asi ha pasado en general con la vida,
la evolucion , lucha de los negros en CUBA. Esta historia de LAS OBLATAS
la estamos investigando: historia de los edificios de las escuelas,
personajes que promovieron la apertura de esas escuelas, localizacion de
fotos y otros documentos importantes .Y algo que no puede faltar:EL
CONTEXTO DE ESA REPUBLICA CUBANA RACISTA DEL SIGLO 20.
ESTOY trabajando con varios investigadores cuya labor es buscar, buscar en
periodicos, revistas alguna noticia; a veces hay que parar por el
alto grado de contaminacion de los materiales (en
cuba trabajamos con la prensa y revistas del principio del siglo veinte,
no hay digitalizacion). UN GRAN OBSTACULO: EL ARCHIVO NACIONAL DE CUBA no
tiene los archivos de LA
IGLESIA CATOLICA en CUBA disponibles para ser consultados. Esto hace las
cosas mas dificiles aun, pero mi visita al CONVENTO DE LAS OBLATAS en el
mes de mayo, 2017 en BALTIMORE, fue el impulso principal para el proyecto y
gracias a la colaboracion y la generosidad de muchas personas pude estar
el mes entero con la posibilidad de acceso a sus archivos.
La musica, las canciones con sus letras sugerentes son parte de la
narracion en mis proyectos. Es algo que me inspira y decide en muchos
casos las esencias y el ritmo de la informacion. Poco a poco he comenzado
a convocar al GRUPO VOCAL BAOBAB para introducirlos en el tema. En la
visita a Camaguey pude conversar con EBENEZER SAMA con quien ya trabaje
con mucho exito en el tema principal de mi documental
REEMBARQUE.
Recientemente , en LA HABANA, tuve un encuentro con TONY AVILA, excelente
cantante y autor de MATANZAS aunque no existe ningun compromiso
establecido todavia. Solo estoy presentando el tema de HERMANAS DE CORAZON
a estos musicos para conocer su interes, sensibilidad y disposicion. Lo
mismo pienso hacer con el cantante, compositor y poeta GERARDO ALFONSO.
Hay mucho trabajo por hacer y yo estoy al frente, dirigiendo y
planificando y evaluando todos los detalles que pueden servir para el
documental, algo que sea interesante, educativo y nunca aburrido. PERO
ADEMAS, no olvido algunos detalles importantes que hay que planificar
desde ahora para volver a BALTIMORE, para vincularme a los historiadores
de BALTIMORE que van a narrar los pasajes de la vida de MOTHER MARY LANGE;
estoy pendiente tambien a la organizacion de esa visita que debe ser entre
los meses de abril y mayo, 2018.
RECIENTEMENTE, SISTER JOSELLA, una de las monjas negras cubanas que
todavia vive en Baltimore, visito a su familia en LA HABANA. Y gracias a
los fondos que teniamos en ese momento pudimos filmar un encuentro con
ella en el BARRIO HABANERO DE COLON, donde yo vivo y alli las personas
espontaneamente llevaron a sus hijos para que fueran bendecidos por
SISTER JOSELLA. Tenemos imagenes que seran parte del documental. Estas son
las cosas que pueden ocurrir aun sin una planificacion total de un
presupuesto, cosas espontanes, unicas que pasan o pueden pasar; asi es el
cine documental, amplio, abierto. NO hice entrevistas en ese momento solo
las imagenes van a hablar y por supuesto una entrevista que posteriormente
le hice a SISTER JOSELLA. Pero la curiosidad estaba en la mirada de la
gente que no tuvo reparo en rodearla: quien era esta mujer negra de habito
tradicional que cubria todo su cuerpo? EXISTEN monjas negras? Quienes son LAS
OBLATAS? La gente en CUBA y en la DIASPORA AFRICANA necesita conocer esta
fascinante historia.
Seguiremos trabajando con pasion y paciencia, no nos olviden. Y despues
que LA ISLA DE CUBA se recupere un poco del HURACAN IRMA, el proximo viaje
sera a SANTIAGO DE CUBA. El unico lugar del pais donde la escuela que
fundaron las OBLATAS llevo el nonbre de la fundadora de la congregacion :
MOTHER MARY LANGE ACADEMY.

ULTIMO DOCUMENTAL DE ESTA SERIE QUE LLAMO CON MUCHO ORGULLO "HISTORIAS E
