That is why it is fundamentally a cry for peace with social justice. Colombia's Beloved 'Doña Tuta' Is Shot Dead  6/8/2022 teleSUR: "Doña Tuta was the vindication of the rights of the San Juan's Black and Indigenous communities, which live overwhelmed by the intensity and degradation of the armed conflict," the Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission (ICHPC) stated. "She received accusations, threats, and stigmas due to her forceful voice demanding respect for the peoples' lifes and territories. She was herself the voice promoting humanitarian agreements... She was the target of judicial set-ups due to to her community role. She managed to save hundreds of lives."

These bases and troops are concentrated on the border with Venezuela, which is considered a political enemy, and in areas where North American and European commercial interests lie. US military personnel guarding gold and copper mines, oil refineries, and other locations of economic interest have become part of Colombia’s national landscape. Less prominent but equally influential is the secretive role of military and police funding and training offered by European countries like the United Kingdom to subdue the local population. After last year’s three-month national strike in which dozens were killed, it was revealed that the UK military had been advising Colombia’s police. Though the details are classified, it is not far-fetched to deduce that they were there to help protect UK business interests."

U.S. General Laura Richardson, head of the U.S. Southern Command, met with Colombian General Luis Navarro in March. She sought assurance that a Petro victory would not lead to the dismantling of seven U.S. Air Force bases in Colombia. Navarro indicated military leaders and most congresspersons would oppose such a step. The Southern Command issued a press release confirming that “Colombia is a staunch security partner.” U.S. Ambassador Phillip Goldberg’s comment on electoral fraud, delivered to an interviewer in mid-May, had destabilizing potential. He mentioned the “real risk posed by the eventual interference in the elections by the Russians, Venezuelans, or Cubans.” Goldberg’s excessive zeal for U.S. interests had been on display in Bolivia. As ambassador there in 2008, he immersed himself in an unsuccessful coup attempt against President Evo Morales – and was expelled."

He alleges that Colombia's current authorities rushed the departure of Usuga, widely known as Otoniel, to avoid embarrassing revelations ahead of the election. In addition, Colombian intelligence detected a Venezuelan spy posing as a soccer coach to photograph Colombian Army and Police facilities. Jeiker Valencia Sánchez, alias El Gato, was arrested and deported on April 7, the PanAm Post news site reported. This Venezuelan spy entered the country in 2018."

Las cajas negras del ‘software’ electoral en Colombia  5/15/2022 El Pais: "Karisma, una fundación experta en seguridad digital y derechos sociales, ha hecho una veeduría al software de escrutinio desde 2018. Francia Márquez acusa a Estados Unidos de intervenir en las elecciones en Colombia  5/13/2022 Infobae: "La candidata a la Vicepresidencia de Colombia por el movimiento de izquierda Pacto Histórico, Francia Márquez Mina, acusó al embajador de Estados Unidos en Colombia, Philip Goldberg, de interferir en las elecciones presidenciales del país con acusaciones presuntamente infundadas contra su campaña, liderada por Gustavo Petro. “Vimos una declaración del embajador del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos del presidente Biden, decir que tenían una información sobre una posible financiación e intervención del Gobierno de Rusia y Venezuela en las elecciones de Colombia. Aunque no mencionó al Pacto Histórico, aunque no mencionó a Gustavo Petro, es obvio que se estaban refiriendo a nuestra candidatura y a nuestra apuesta política”, aseguró la lideresa social."

“No es suficiente con no ser racista, hay que ser antiracista”: Edna Liliana Valencia presenta su primer libro ‘El racismo y yo’ en la Filbo 2022  4/28/2022 Leamos: "Recalcó que su libro está inspirado en mujeres y niñas afrocolombianas, pero no está solo dirigido hacia ellas. “Es un libro para todas las personas, yo espero que lo lea mucha gente blanco mestiza y que puedan ponerse en los zapatos de la experiencia de vida de una mujer racializada ... que entiendan que no es suficiente con no ser racista, hay que ser antiracista y ser conscientes de cómo se combate. ¡Obviamente, en Colombia sí existe el racismo!  4/11/2022 El Tiempo: "Los flagelos del racismo y la discriminación se pueden combatir, y la mejor vía para lograrlo es con el reconocimiento de la existencia de estos. Adicionalmente, se debe brindar educación multicultural y de ética ciudadana, abordar y no aceptar la doble moral existente, propiciar una atmósfera de aceptación de las diferencias y fortalecer y hacer cumplir la legislación actual contra el racismo. Recordemos que una sociedad consciente puede señalar, repudiar, hacer control de estos actos irrespetuosos y empezar a practicar la sanción social para todos los racistas."

Cuando le dije que su actitud y la forma como estaba planteando las cosas era racista, me mandó a terapia. A mi compañero Víctor Hugo Moreno, que le habló de la misma forma, le respondió distinto. Es que, siendo mujer, y negra, hay más soberbia y más desprecio. Fue muy fuerte”, recuerda Francia."

Inédita crisis en Colombia por sospechas de fraude electoral y solicitudes de recuento  3/23/2022 RFI: "La MOE señaló irregularidades y fallas en el trascurso de la votación y el preconteo, un resultado rápido que solo tiene valor informativo. “Una vez se finaliza la jornada de votación, se empieza a hacer el conteo de votos y se empieza a transmitir. Indigenous activists’ deaths highlight surging Colombia conflict  2/4/2022 Al Jazeera: "The Indigenous Guard – or Kiwe Thegnas in the Nasa Yuwe language – is a grassroots network of Indigenous men, women and children who volunteer to defend their ancestral territories. It originated in Colombia’s violence-ridden Cauca province and began to operate as an organised force in 2001, during a peak in armed conflict. Without weapons of their own, members of the guard have confronted a wide variety of armed groups in Colombia, from the now-defunct leftist FARC rebels to right-wing paramilitaries and the Colombian army. Members of the guard carry a baton decorated with a red-and-green ribbon that symbolises the power they have been granted by the community. They hold weekend schools for youth, teaching them not only about traditional Nasa customs, but most importantly about how to protect themselves and their land from violence and environmental damage. Guard members say their main threat today comes from groups of dissident FARC rebels who disagree with a 2016 peace deal that saw the group demobilise, bringing an end to decades of fighting, and have since picked up arms again."

Primicia: embajador de Estados Unidos se reunió con el candidato presidencial Rodolfo Hernández  1/15/2022 Semana: "El candidato le pidió al embajador de Estados Unidos la necesidad de revisar el enfoque en la lucha antidrogas y le planteó incluso la posibilidad de estudiar de manera profunda la opción de la legalización. Hernández le dijo a Goldberg que Estados Unidos, el mundo y Colombia llevan más de 50 años luchando contra las drogas, con un énfasis militar, y hasta ahora solo ha habido más crimen, más consumo y más cultivos."

Palenque, from which Silva’s record label took its name, holds an invaluable place in Latin America as the first town established by enslaved Africans who fought their way out of Cartagena. In Palenque, Silva met with the musicians of Sexteto Tabalá, a local group of farmers who mixed Palenquero (a language combining African Bantu, Spanish, and Portuguese words) and son Cubano (a Cuban style of music made up of both Spanish and African rhythms.) Despite having no experience in recording or producing, Silva felt compelled to record Sexteto Tabalá. The Tragic Assassination of Colombia’s Sports Hero Patrón, Lover of Football and his Afro-Colombian Community  8/23/2020 Orinoco Tribune: "On August 11, Patrón went into the hills to chop wood with about two dozen other people from his community. In that region, one of his friends told us, “there is a custom to cut wood at certain times of the year; the wood is cut and sawed and then brought down the Baudó River to Puerto Meluk or Puerto Pizarro.” On that day, Patrón and the others were confronted by armed members of the paramilitary groups that terrorized the area. The armed men interrogated Patrón and his friends, and then released them all except Patrón. “Minutes later,” Patrón’s friend told us, the group Patrón had been with “heard shots, and they knew that they [the men] had assassinated Patrón. They waited for the assassins to leave, went back, and found him dead with his face in the earth.” Patrón’s body was brought back to his community in Alto Baudó, where it was washed and dressed in white sheets; rituals of burial rooted in Afro-Colombian traditions were then performed. When his mother, sisters, cousins, and son tried to come for the ceremony, they were prevented by the same paramilitary groups (who did this within sight of the army and the police). Eventually, only his mother, his son, and one sister were able to get through to attend the ceremony."

The crew rapidly switches between Spanish and another language – but it is not English, the international language of hip-hop. There are 68 indigenous languages in the country, and many of them are under threat of going extinct from “pressure to assimilate” or Colombia’s long-running internal conflict with drug cartels and paramilitary forces. Palenquero traces its linguistic roots to the Bantu language family native to sub-Saharan Africa, and includes influence from several romance languages as well.
