Estrenan documental El mundo mágico de Mendive  5/12/2015 ACN: "El documental El mundo mágico de Mendive, de la realizadora uruguaya Juanamaría Cordones-Cook, de la Universidad de Missouri, Estados Unidos, fue estrenado hoy en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, de esta capital. La poetisa y ensayista Nancy Morejón, Premio Nacional de Literatura, al presentar el audiovisual destacó que la cineasta atrapa en 40 minutos la cosmogonía en constate desarrollo y enriquecimiento de Manuel Mendive, uno de los artistas imprescindibles en la Cuba de hoy."

Things that Cannot Be Seen Any Other Way: The Art of Manuel Mendive  9/2/2013 California African American Museum, Los Angeles: "This exhibition is a newly-produced, career-spanning overview, while emphasizing the artist’s mature work. Whereas cubism and surrealism had been common among his predecessors, Mendive instead incorporates visual elements rooted in Lukumi/Yoruba visual traditions into his painting. The exhibition and publication trace Mendive’s drawing, painting, sculpture, and performances from the early 1960s to the present, giving special focus to discrete themes common across his work, including religion, nationalism, and memory. Mendive’s most significant work, which forms the central conceptual and physical focus of the project, are his 1960s and 1970s series “Yoruba Mythology” and “Middle Passage,” and his performances in the late 1980s, such as “La Vida.”"

Cuban art currently on show in Los Angeles  6/6/2013 Havana Cultura: "The California African American Museum of Art—in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Florida International University, and Fundación Amistad— currently hosts a retrospective exhibition covering over 50 years of Cuban visual artist Manuel Mendive's career. The show includes visual and performance work displaying Lukumi and Yoruba influences and tackling religious and political subject matter. The museum is also the venue of a second Cuban-themed exhibition entitled Afrodescendientes: photographer Roberto Chile in Guanabacoa. At the crossroads of photojournalism and artistic photography, the exhibit features the work that Cuban photographer and documentalist Roberto Chile carried out in the Island's easternmost province of Guanabacoa, whose population is largely composed of Afro-Cubans."

Manuel Mendive’s 100 bare-naked ladies ‘Las Cabezas’  7/1/2012 Cuba Absolutely: "Perhaps it was not quite 100 bare naked ladies but the parade down Prado of naked bodies painted by artist Manuel Mendive was a great way to kick off Havana’s 11th Art Biennale which has sought to integrate the art with the streets…and there is nothing like naked flesh to bring out the crowds in Havana…"

Manuel Mendive expone “La foresta mágica” en la Galería Estudio ARTIZAR  4/25/2012 Revista de Arte: "La obra de Manuel Mendive (La Habana, 1944) se muestra estos días en Estudio Artizar. Carlos Pinto, director de la Galería comenta que la exposición “La foresta mágica” es uno de los trabajos más personales y coherentes de los últimos años del artista cubano, que tras años de colaboración con la galería renueva este compromiso con una muestra cargada de espiritualidad y comunión, que convierte el espacio que ocupa en una jungla habitada por dioses y animales, hombres y espíritus. Con motivo de la edición del catálogo de “La foresta mágica”, con textos de Andrés Isaac Santana y Darys J. Vázquez."

Manuel Mendive en México: el color de mi piel  2/4/2008 Cubarte: "Por primera vez uno de los grandes de la pintura cubana contemporánea, el maestro Manuel Mendive, presenta una exposición de su obra en diversos géneros, en la ciudad mexicana de Yucatán. “El color blanco, azul, verde y el color de mi piel”, es el título de esta muestra, cuyo máximo protagonista lo es el diálogo del artista con la naturaleza, como discurso visual de la armonía y de la luz, que se ha inaugurado en el Museo Regional de Antropología Palacio Cantón."

Mendive: Deities define his art  3/6/2005 Miami Herald: "In the art world, Manuel Mendive is considered the leading contemporary Afro-Cuban artist, his magic realist canvases, sculptures and performance pieces inspired by his mystical beliefs in the santería religion. In South Florida, where Mendive´s one-man show Feeding the Spirit, the Light, the Ancestors, Olodumare, the most beautiful thing opened Friday at Gary Nader Fine Art in Coral Gables, the painter´s name also evokes a key moment in Cuban-exile history. Almost 17 years ago, an angry exile protesting an auction of artwork by Cuban painters living on the island bought Mendive´s painting The Peacock for $500 -- then publicly burned it."

Recorrido de Manuel Mendive por países de Africa  9/9/2003 AfroCubaWeb: "Continuando el recorrido por Nigeria, Mendive permaneció en la ciudad de Osogbo, en la cual tuvo lugar el Festival de Osun, uno de los eventos religiosos y culturales más significativos e importantes de Nigeria. Mendive y los cubanos babaoloshas e iyaoloshas que lo acompañaron en el recorrido, conocieron de cerca la emoción de visitar el templo de Osun, y contemplar cientos de miles de personas, bellamente ataviados para rendir homenaje a la deidad en la floresta que rodea el río Osun, donde se le hacían ofrendas a la orisha y se podía apreciar muchas personas agrupadas cantando y danzando al compás del ritmo de diversos instrumentos de percusión. En Osogbo la ciudad se llenó de vehículos con banderolas y mensajes alusivos al Festival de Osun. Ese día se reunieron en torno a Osun, africanos, afroamericanos y afrocaribeños, hermanados por la cultura y por la tradición de la cultura yoruba presente en el Nuevo Mundo. Posteriormente, Manuel Mendive realizó una acción performática que constituyó la entrega de una pintura suya al río Osun, en cuya obra se representaba a Osun y a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de Cuba. También en Osogbo asistió al festejo de Shangó, presidido por el Oní Shango Sangodare, destacado artista de Osogbo, el cual propició la visita de Mendive a los templos más importantes que se encuentran en esta ciudad. En Ilé-Ifé, la ciudad sagrada de los yorubas, acompañado por el Director de Patrimonio de Nigeria, Eluyemi Omotoso, el artista visitó los templos de Oduduwa y de Obatalá. Mendive se propone contribuir a la restauración del templo de Obatalá y realizar un mural."

Afro-Cuban artist displays a splashing show for Lam  12/28/2002 South African Broadcasting Corp: "Afro-Cuban artist Manuel Mendive has painted the faces and torsos of 80 Cuban dancers for a performance at a sculpture exhibition at Cuba's Museum of Fine Arts commemorating the centennial of the birth of Afro-Cuban artist Wilfredo Lam. Many of the 80 dancers, who performed in honour of the exhibition wore masks studded with sea shells and carried fish and pails of sea water as they danced to African rhythms at the Havana waterfront sea-wall, the Malecon." - the page features a link to Mendive's page on AfroCubaWeb.

Cuba: Artist captivates with color  12/28/2002 AP: "Even among the salsa musicians and Santeria practitioners roaming around Havana's colonial Plaza de la Catedral, Manuel Mendive stands out. Emerging from the 18th-century cathedral in his typical African boubou robe of linen, his gray dreadlocks swept back in a ponytail, the 57-year-old sculptor and painter is as recognizable here as is his work. Many call him the island's foremost living artist. Art lovers in Cuba and abroad are fascinated with his brightly colored sculptures and paintings, nearly all dedicated to Santeria, the Afro-Cuban belief system blending Roman Catholic saints and Yoruba deities." Continuing the media's shabby understanding of Santeria which has everything to do with Orishas and precious little to do with "saints."
