Lydia CabreraLydia Cabrera is a legendary Cuban ethnographer and author on AfroCuban religions. She left behind an extensive bibliography, mostly published in Miami by Coleccion Chichereku en el Exilio. Unfortunately few of her works have been translated into English. Lydia did extensive work in Matanzas, including the small towns south of the city of Matanzas itself, places such as Perico and Union de Reyes. Her works are much prized both in Cuba and in the US as she presents us with a great deal of material from knowledgeable elders in the African traditions of Cuba. The Sacred Language of the Abakuá 8/1/2015 Cross River Cultural Heritage: "Cuban ethnographer and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899 Havana — 1991 USA), compiled a 530 page dictionary of Abakuá language, originally published as La lengua sagrada de los Náñigos (Miami: Ediciones Universales, Colección del Chickerekú en el exile, 1988). We are translating this work as The Sacred Language of the Abakuá, with translation and annotation by Patricia González (Director, Smith College), Victor Manfredi (Consultant, Boston University), and Ivor Miller (Consultant, University of Calabar, Nigeria)… This project is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities." |
El Monte, that Book by Lydia Cabrera 2/23/2019 Havana Times: "From the
paragraphs at the very beginning, you can see the overwhelming tenacity in the
belief of spirits living in the mountains, like in forests in ancestral Africa,
powerful spirits whose kindness and hostility pull the strings of human fate.
So, any mountain space is considered sacred because of the invisible, and
sometimes visible, presence of spirits and deities, “Saints are in the mountains
more than in the heavens.” And, Lydia Cabrera explains this perception with
knowledge and love, her book revealing one of the most deeply-rooted aspects of
our customs and traditions: that the back country not be seen as such, which
wouldn’t make it very different from any other natural environment, but rather
as a source of habits, mystery, charm and magic…"
Exhibit provides a deep dive into Afro-Cuban religions and folklore 10/21/2018 University
of Miami: "To this day, the most comprehensive study of Afro-Cuban religions and
customs in the world remains the oeuvre of Lydia Cabrera. Writer, ethnographer,
queer, white, upper middle class, independent thinker. All these adjectives
describe Cuban-born Cabrera, who died in Miami in 1991, but not before leaving
behind scores of books, documents, notebooks, religious artifacts, letters, and
photographs that are permanently housed as the Lydia Cabrera Papers in the
University of Miami Libraries Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC)."
Lydia Cabrera and Édouard Glissant: Trembling Thinking 9/13/2018 AS/COA: "The
new exhibition of Americas Society focuses on the ideas developed by the
prominent Caribbean thinkers Lydia Cabrera and Édouard Glissant."
‘Voice of the turtle’, Èyòngó nèwèn 8/30/2017 Cross River Culture: "The
turtle is a universal symbol of the Mgbè society, extending to the historically
related Abakuá society of Cuba, where Lydia Cabrera reported that, "many lodges
display turtle shells during celebrations or sometimes have a live turtle in
their Fambá [lodge hall] with the sign of Mokongo. These turtles wander around
all the corners of the Fambá, going out to the patio and returning to the Foekue
[inner sanctum]."
LYDIA
CABRERA IN TRANSLATION 4/20/2017 Harvard University: "Speakers: Marial
Iglesias Utset: Translating Cultures: Lydia Cabrera’s Liminal Worlds; Erwan
Dianteill: The French Translation of El Monte (2003): Genesis, Difficulties and
Reception of a Cuban Classic; Patricia González Gómez-Cásseres, and Ivor Miller:
Lydia Cabrera’s
two decades of ethnographic research among Afro-Cuban communities produced an
extraordinary body of publications on Afro Caribbean religions and folklore.
Nevertheless, her oeuvre remains relatively unknown outside the Spanish-speaking
world and very little of it has been translated."
The Masked Theatre of Cuban Abakuá 9/22/2016 AfroCubaWeb: "Presentation of
African-derived Abakua culture in Cuba with chants, dance, & percussion in
relation to a translation of Lydia Cabrera's La lengua sagrada de los Náñigos as
The Sacred Language of the Abakuá. Smith College, Northampton, MA. With Angel
Guerrero and Roman Diaz, 9/22/2016."
Wifredo Lam: the unlikely comeback of the Cuban Picasso 8/31/2016 Telegraph,
UK: "Yet Lam’s attitude to this world of ancestral belief remained highly
ambivalent. His principle informant on Afro-Cuban culture wasn’t his godmother,
the Santeria priestess, but Lydia Cabrera, an upper-class, white anthropologist.
In Haiti, he attended a voodoo trance ceremony – not as a “local” who had
observed similar rituals as a child, but as part of a group of European
intellectuals, including Breton. “A lot of people have assumed we lived in a
Santeria environment,” says Eskil Lam. “Nothing could be further from the truth.
We had the most atheist upbringing you can imagine. My father lost his faith in
any kind of religion in the late Twenties and he never deviated from that.”"
The Sacred Language of the Abakuá 8/1/2015 Cross River Cultural

Dr. Ivor Miller On Greenpeace Radio Oct.3rd 2011 10/3/2011 Cuba Calabar
Radio: "Dr. Miller discusses Afro-Cuban culture, Abakuá, Èkpé and the
environmental impact on the forests of Cross River Cultures in Nigeria and
Cameroon. Features Music by Victor Herrera, Arsenio Rodriguez, Enyenison Enkama,
Celia Cruz and music from the archives of distinguished folklorist and author
Lydia Cabrera."

There was bad blood between Lydia and the comrades with their republicanismo. In recent years, this has changed.
