As in many countries, accurate demographics are lacking. Estimates of mestizo or mixed range from 50% to 70%, blacks from 3% to 10%, and whites from 20% to 40% while indigenous hover at around 2% to 3%. The story of Chavez revolves around the taking of power by black and mixed venezuelans to the detriment of the previous white masters. The story of the opposition to Chavez and Maduro centers on a retaking of power by white elites.
