Call for proposals on "African Religious Influences"

Traveling to Cuba

Casa del Caribe

XX Festival Del Caribe
July 3rd Thru 9th 2000
Santiago De Cuba
"Dedicated to Africa"

An annual event.  The focus in 2000 is on Africa.   According to Marazul, they are handling the travel for 45 groups from the US!

The University of Colorado Department of Ethnic Studies, one of many groups attending, is organizing a roundtable there.

See especially the official festival site with the schedule:
www.cult.cu/ccaribe/fiestafgo/fgo.html (Español)
www.cult.cu/eng/ccaribe/fiestafgo/fgo.html (English)

See also the contemporaneous workshop in Santiago from 7/3 to 7/7 on the Maceo brothers, Jose and Antonio, the famed general who led the Mambi army in what is commonly thought of as the war of liberation against Spain.  In fact this was one of the hemisphere's greatest slave revolts, as the Mambi army is estimated to have been up to 92% of African descent.

        AFRICAN ATLANTIC RESEARCH TEAM
            announces
NORTH AMERICAN PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS ON
"African Religious Influences in Our Americas"
                at the
            XX FESTIVAL DEL CARIBE

Proposals are now being considered for scholarly roundtables at the XX Festival del Caribe (An Annual Educational and Cultural Event) July 3-9, 2000, Santiago de Cuba.

Casa del Caribe of Santiago de Cuba has authorized the African Atlantic Research Team (AART) to invite North American scholars, activists, researchers, educators and other interested professionals to submit research papers for this historic event. We are particularly interested in presentations developed from author's research as well as papers that consider salient theoretical issues on the topic "Religious Traditions of Africans in the Atlantic Diaspora. '

Roundtables will be tailored toward exploring and challenging the existing theoretical issues and literature about religious traditions of Africans in the Atlantic Diaspora. Special consideration will be given to papers that are: based on the authors' research; that engage current theoretical issues; and that review literature related to African religious traditions and their descendants in the Americas.

Papers that link issues of gender and religious traditions also will be given particular consideration. Some suggested topics are:

    * African descendants and New World/American religious traditions
    * Contact of religious traditions in the Americas (e.g., Asian,
        Middle Eastern, African, European)
    * Transforming Carnival: sacred content in public discourse
