Do we stop work on the
documentary project "Sisters of Heart" due to the new Blockade? 11/2/2017

In my career as an artist in the audiovisual world, I have had to face
very difficult situations during the production of my 13 films:
misunderstandings, economic difficulties, technological problems, health
issues, family responsibilities. In short, LIFE AND ITS WEB. The usual
things that happens to many people. But this case now, it's different.

Since 2015, even before the death of my mother and before starting the
work of "Dialogue with my grandmother", I decided to
tell the story of The Oblate Sisters
of Providence. My mother (Olga América Casamayor Armas) was a student
at one of her schools in Cuba. Her photo, with the uniform of the Night
School in the 40s, is the main inspiration for this work.
As I have explained on other occasions, this is a documentary that wants
to demonstrate the connections between Afro-Cuban and Afro-American
families for the education of their girls since the 19th century. We have
to work in Cuba and in the United States. So, what will happen now that it
is almost impossible for Cubans to travel to the United States? I do not
have the health, nor the economic resources to take the risk and the
adventure of going to Colombia or another country for the possible
obtaining of a visa.
Do we stop this project? Do we forget
it? No way. Then what do we do?
We will look for alternative methods, they will appear. I'm going to
create a network with young filmmakers, cameramen and friends who can
continue this beautiful and necessary work in the USA. I need photos and
documents from the 19th century in Baltimore (founding site of Las
Oblatas). And in the case of interviews, I have very clear VOICES that
should not be missing and I am very clear about the design of the
information that could be provided. I fully trust the professionalism of
those who participate. The other friends only have to continue
SUPPORTING this artistic project
with the resources that are necessary. Cinema is expensive.
But what do we do right now in Havana?
First, I'm not worried, I do not feel it's the end. I know you will not
forget me. And I need to be focused on directing this research that is
very complex and spread out across many places.
In the month of November we will photograph the documents recently found
in the National Library and the Archives of the Archdiocese of Havana.

We already have 2 musical themes for the documentary. Professor Magaly
Rolando, musical director of Vocal Baobab, takes the first steps with "El
Sembrador", a very popular song in the Cuban Catholic Church. The second
theme is from my inspiration, a song for the credits of the documentary, a
presentation that is evocative of the trip from Cuba to Baltimore to
consecrate oneself to God and the education of black girls: A musical poem
with the rhythm of a DANZON.
To the extent that we can get more resources we can do the review of what
we have filmed in parallel. We have to transfer the materials and that
process has to be paid. There is a lot of work ahead. So, dear friends, do
we stop the documentary "Sisters of Heart"? No way.
We already have the first information about Santiago de Cuba! Thanks to
the Office of the Curator of the City of Santiago de Cuba. The Oblate
school in that beautiful province is the only one that bore the name of
the founder of the Order: Mother Mary Lange Academy. We will go to
Santiago de Cuba in January of 2018.

Corazón” por el nuevo bloqueo? 2/11/2017

En mi carrera como artista del mundo audiovisual, he tenido que enfrentar
situaciones muy difíciles durante la producción de mis 13 materiales :
Incomprensiones, dificultades económicas , problemas tecnológicos, de
salud, responsabilidades familiares. En fin, LA VIDA Y SUS MATICES. Lo
común que le pasa a muchas personas . Pero este caso de ahora, es
diferente.

Desde el año 2015, aún antes del fallecimiento de mi mamá y antes de
iniciar los trabajos de “Diálogo con mi abuela”, me propuse
contar la historia de Las Hermanas
Oblatas de la Providencia . Mi mamá (Olga América Casamayor Armas) fue
alumna de una de sus escuelas en Cuba. Su foto, con el uniforme de la
Escuela Nocturna en los años 40, es la inspiración principal para este
trabajo.
Como he explicado en otras ocasiones, este es un documental que quiere
demostrar las conexiones entre las familias afrocubanas y afroamericanas
por la educación de sus niñas desde el siglo XIX. Hay que trabajar en Cuba
y en Estados Unidos. Entonces, ¿qué pasará ahora que para los cubanos
resulta casi imposible viajar a Estados Unidos ? Yo no tengo ni la salud,
ni los recursos económicos para tomar el riesgo y la aventura de ir a
Colombia u otro país para la posible obtención de una visa.
¿Detenemos este proyecto? ¿Lo olvidamos? De ninguna manera. Entonces, qué
hacemos?
Bueno, buscaremos y aparecerán formas alternativas . Voy a hacer una red
con cineastas jóvenes, camarógrafos y amigos y amigas que puedan continuar
este hermoso y necesario trabajo en USA. Yo necesito fotos y documentos
del siglo XIX en Baltimore (sitio de fundación de Las Oblatas). Y en el
caso de las entrevistas , tengo muy clara LAS VOCES que no deben faltar y
tengo muy claro el diseño de la información que podrían aportar. Yo confío
plenamente en la profesionalidad de los que participen. Los otros amigos y
amigas sólo tienen que seguir APOYANDO
los recursos que son necesarios para estos movimientos artísticos. El cine
es caro. Pero, ¿qué hacemos ahora mismo en La Habana? Primero, no estoy
preocupada, no siento que es el fin. Sé que no me van a olvidar. Y yo
necesito estar concentrada dirigiendo esta investigación que es muy
compleja y dispersa en muchos lugares.
En el mes de noviembre vamos a fotografiar los documentos encontrados
recientemente en la Biblioteca Nacional y Archivos del Arzobispado de La
Habana .
Ya tenemos 2 temas musicales para el documental. La profesora Magaly
Rolando, directora musical de Vocal Baobab da los primeros pasos con “El
Sembrador”, canto muy popular en La Iglesia Católica Cubana. El segundo
tema es de mi inspiración, una canción para los créditos del documental,
una presentación que es la evocación del viaje de Cuba a Baltimore para
consagrarse a Dios y a la educación de las niñas negras : Un poema musical
con el ritmo de un DANZON.
En la medida que podamos conseguir más recursos podremos
hacer-paralelamente –la revisión de lo que hemos filmado. Hay que
transferir los materiales y ese proceso hay que pagarlo. Hay mucho trabajo
por delante. Entonces, queridos amigos y amigas ¿Se para el documental
“Hermanas de Corazón”? De ninguna manera.
¡Ya tenemos las primeras informaciones sobre Santiago de Cuba! Gracias a
la Oficina del Conservador de La Ciudad de Santiago de Cuba! La escuela de
Las Oblatas en esa hermosa provincia es la única que llevó el nombre de la
fundadora de la Orden: Mother Mary Lange Academy . En Santiago de Cuba
estaremos en enero del 2018.
