Traveling to Cuba

Festival CUBA DANZON '01
Nov 2 - 25, 2001

Cuba Danzón '01 celebrates over 100 years of this popular Cuban dance, born in Matanzas of AfroCuban percussion and French "Contre-Danse" (Contradanza ) as brought over from Haiti in the late 18th century.

In the US, we have one Danzón group based in San Francisco, Orquesta la Moderna Tradicion, headed up by Roberto Borrell, a veteran of the Conjunto Foklorico Nacional.

Danzón is also the music behind the hugely popular recent CD, Buena Vista Social Club, with Ry Cooder and many musicians from Havana.  It recently won a Grammy.
