Celia CruzCelia Cruz

You can read it here: Celia got her start with the communist party back in the 30's! Course, she's strayed a little from her roots since then...

"The Partido Socialista de Cuba, founded in 1925, was closely related to the labor movement and had a focus in its political program in favor of the masses of African descent. The Partido Socialista de Cuba, a forerunner of the present day Communist Party of Cuba, was their platform for expression and action against the discriminating institutions and called for a profound change of the neocolonial, racist pre-revolutionary Cuban society. As that political party owned a radio station called "Mil Diez" (1010), opportunities were offered to Cubans of African descent to express themselves in socio-political and cultural programs. In the field of popular dance music, important musicians of the fifties, like Celia Cruz, Sonora Matancera, and others, made their initial appearances on the airwaves of that radio station. This occurred in a period when other commercial radio stations excluded the participation of Cubans of African descent from their programs." -- Eugene Godfried, 6/00

An Afro-Latina Is Gearing Up To Take On The Role Of Celia Cruz In A New Musical And No It’s Not Amara La Negra Or Cardi B  4/5/2018 Mitu: "Azucar will get another shot in the limelight this year. A new theatrical production of a Celia Cruz musical is further proof that the world just cannot get enough of the Guarachera legend’s musical presence. Even despite the string of musicals that have been made in her honor and the fifteen years that have followed her death."

New Celia Cruz Musical Reclaims Story of the Great Cuban Singer  4/3/2018 Billboard: "Omer Pardillo-Cid, Celia Cruz’s former manager and the executor of her estate, was unimpressed with the way the late Cuban icon had been presented in productions based on her life, particularly a 2015 bio-series produced in Colombia and broadcast on Telemundo, which he says took considerable liberties with the facts. Now, Pardillo, who describes Cruz as “a black woman, who was poor, who left Cuba and conquered the world,” is bringing the beloved singer’s official story to the stage."

Celia Cruz and the flag  12/1/2015 On Cuba: "When the flag touched the stage, Celia stopped singing. She embraced the flag and covered it with kisses."

A high note for Celia Cruz's memory  5/20/2005 Chicago Tribune

Smithsonian Hails Salsa Queen - Retrospective Traces Celia Cruz's Life From Havana to Stardom  5/18/2005 Washington Post

Celia Cruz Removed From U.S. Blacklist  9/23/2004 AP: "Salsa queen Celia Cruz was removed from a U.S. list of suspected communists in 1965 after she performed and raised money for groups trying to overthrow Cuban President Fidel Castro, according to newly released immigration documents. U.S. officials suspected in the 1950s that Cruz, who died last year of a brain tumor, supported Castro's communist government. She was refused a visa at least twice starting in 1952 because U.S. law at the time forbade entry to foreigners affiliated with communists… "The record indicates that in July 1960 she fled as a defector from the Communist regime of Cuba," according to an Oct. 28, 1965, immigration service memorandum. "Since that time she has actively cooperated with anti-Communist, anti-Castro organizations through artistic performances and by campaigning for funds for those organizations." "

Remembering Celia  8/26/2004 San Bernardino Sun: "The high-energy performances of the late Cuban entertainer Celia Cruz influenced and inspired music lovers from the four corners of the Earth. Cruz, who died last year, built a legacy around her exciting rhythms and heart-pumping, feel-good tunes. On Saturday, much of Cruz's body of work will be celebrated in "A Tribute to the Late Celia Cruz" at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. The show will feature Cruz's former West Coast band, Bayalo, and a 10-piece orchestra."

Celia: My Life, by Celia Cruz, with Ana Cristina  7/4/2004 Orlando Sentinel: "An icon of almost unimaginable importance among Hispanics, Celia Cruz is a daunting subject for a memoir. So it's understandable that Celia: My Life, the singer's as-told-to autobiography with writer Ana Cristina Reymundo, doesn't fulfill all the expectations one might have for the authorized story of the legendary "Queen of Salsa," who died of cancer a year ago at age 78. What the anecdote-laden, first-person account lacks in sophisticated historical perspective is outweighed by how effectively it reflects the singer's exuberant spirit."

Remembering Celia Cruz, Latin's Tireless Advocate  7/27/2003 Reuters

Personal Voices: Remembering Celia Cruz  7/25/2003 Alternet: "Cruz had a way of bridging the many gaps that exist between Latins of different socio-economic classes and ethnic backgrounds. Despite the progress that Latin countries have experienced over the past years, the divisions between rich and poor, between the elites and the masses, still remain solidly entrenched in society. There's very little – if any at all – common ground between the haves and the have-nots. But in my experience, Celia Cruz was one of them."

Cuban singer became Miami icon  7/19/2003 Financial Times: "Celia Cruz will be remem-bered for her powerful voice, sophisticated timing, extravagant costumes, and her trademark cry of "Azúcar!" (Spanish for sugar), writes Richard Lapper. But the death on Wednesday of the 77-year-old Cuban singer has also highlighted the rift that divides Cuban-Americans from their homeland."

Letter to the press, 12/7/02

Celia Cruz
