HANDS OFF ASSATA (long version).  An historic talk given by Assata Shakur, former Black Panther and political prisoner, at the 1997 Youth Festival in Havana, Cuba. Assata Shakur was liberated from prison and has been living in exile in Cuba in the 1980s. She talks about why she was targeted in the context of the FBI's Counter-Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO). She also talks optimistically about the future of revolutionary struggle. This is one of the few opportunities she has had to tell her side of the story to the American people. 90 minutes. $20

Hands off Assata - Deepa Fernandes

"Her name is Assata Shakur. Assata “She who Struggles” Shakur “the Thankful”. They call her JoAnne Chesimard, and they want her as an accomplice to murder.

I met Assata last New Year's Eve in Havana...."

AN OPEN LETTER TO NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR WHITMAN
KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF ASSATA

http://www.iacenter.org/assata.htm

Governor Whitman:

Your grandstanding actions in seeking Assata Shakur's return by placing a $50,000 bounty on her head is an insult to all Black women and men who have devoted their lives to the freedom of Black people. In seeking her apprehension by methods that include "kidnapping," you have engaged in the kind of debased moralism that the former slave masters in this country resorted to when seeking the return of runaway Africans to slavery.

Several weeks ago, New Jersey state troopers sent Pope John Paul II a letter asking him to call for the extradition of Assata Shakur, formerly known as JoAnne Chesimard. Shakur, who was a member of the Black Panther Party, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the 1973 murder of a New Jersey state trooper. In 1979 she broke out from prison, and now lives in exile in Cuba. In an open letter addressed to the Pope, Assata tells her side of the story.

Guest:  Assata Shakur, Black Panther and Cuban exile.

Silvia Baraldini
http://www.justice-for-silvia.org/silvia.html

The U.S. denies that it punishes people for their political beliefs. But Silvia fits every definition of a political prisoner. She received an incredible 40 year "racketeering" sentence for aiding in the escape of jailed Black Panther leader, Assata Shakur. Another three years were added when she refused to testify before a grand jury investigating the Puerto Rican independence movement.

Marilyn Bucks

Marilyn Buck, long-time activist for social justice, is a political prisoner in Federal prison in Dublin, CA. From her teen involvement in anti-racist organizing in Texas, she deepened her commitment to the Black Liberation movement and opposition to the Vietnam War through SDS, Third World Newsreel, and work with the Black Panther Party. She is serving an 80 year sentence for conspiracy and aiding the escape of Assata Shakur. She is a poet, PEN award winner, and sculptor. In prison, she continues her activism, writing and studies. Let's support her, she will be remembered as the folks who stood with John Brown have been these many years.
