Anti-War Movement: No Racist War

Anti-War News
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2002, NATIONAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON DC with a joint action in San Francisco 9/30/02 International Action Center: "On Saturday, October 26, 2002 -- the first anniversary of the signing of the so-called Patriot Act -- anti-war, civil rights, labor, student and other forces are joining together to launch a massive international mobilization in opposition to a new war against the people of Iraq. Mass marches and rallies will be held in Washington DC and San Francisco in the U.S., and in many other countries.
As the Bush administration violates international law it has been systematically engaged in a campaign of division and repression in the United States including a wholesale assault on the Bill of Rights, institutionalization of racial profiling, and aggregation of near dictatorial powers to the Executive branch."
Thousands march on Cheney's house to protest a war with Iraq 9/29/02 AP
'This war is wrong and we won't stand for it' 9/29/02 Independent, UK: "Eye witness: Up to 350,000 people marched in London yesterday against military action in Iraq. And they were not the 'usual suspects'"
The peace movement lives 9/27/02 Working for Change: "The only reason -- the only reason -- that Congressional Democrats this week started speaking out, in more than their previously token numbers, against an invasion is because they have been deluged with phone calls, faxes, and e-mails expressing the public's opposition. Polls show widespread doubt; Congressional office intake valves, a measure of the people passionate enough to contact their public officials, has been running more than 90% against invasion. And volume has been high."

Rise Up...Dump Bush 9/7/02 Counterpunch: "We must start acting like self-governing adults who reject rule by the oil industry, military contractors, and other corporate profiteers. George W. Bush and his administration (many of them fellow Vietnam-era draft dodgers) blundered into a new quagmire in Afghanistan. Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories exploded into a raging inferno of deadly violence. The conflict between Pakistan and India over Kashmir threatens to follow suit, perhaps escalating into nuclear war. Much of Latin America--including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezuela--balances on the brink of economic meltdown, political coups and chaos, primarily caused by corporate globalization policies hatched in Washington that exploit their resources. Our environment shows more signs of severe damage with every cycle of the seasons and cascading problems of pollution, drought, fire and flooding."
Situation Deteriorating Rapidly in Afghanistan 9/6/02 Stratfor: from 8/28 - "Recent reports indicate the Taliban and al Qaeda are regrouping in preparation for a major escalation of fighting in Afghanistan. Moreover, STRATFOR has received intelligence that resistance to U.S. forces in Afghanistan has spread well beyond these groups, threatening a steep increase in fighting over the coming months… Sources in Russian and Indian intelligence separately estimate the U.S. military has suffered between 300 and 400 killed in Afghanistan, with an unknown number wounded. The Pentagon says substantially fewer than 100 have been killed. Although foreign estimates may be inflated, there is no way to independently confirm U.S. claims either."
Tinman Protesters Harassed in Nashville 8/26/02 IndyMedia: "Cops threaten to arrest protesters who were standing on a public sidewalk outside hotel where Dick Cheney was attending private fundraiser for GOP. Cops tried to move them a block out of sight. Protesters refused." And won the right to protest, allegedly part of the Constitution since the Americans went up against the British.
Ore. Protest Surprised White House 8/23/02 AP: "More than 1,000 people turned out to scream anti-Bush slogans, tag buildings with graffiti and challenge police at barricades around the hotel where the president held a fundraiser for Sen. Gordon Smith.
Among other issues, the protesters said they were upset with Bush's plan to relax environmental standards for logging, a possible war with Iraq, the U.S. stand on the Palestinian question and what they called rampant government corruption.
The group blocked buildings, and Republican donors trying to get to the hotel were taunted and jostled. Many had to be escorted in by police, who later used pepper spray and rubber bullets on the crowd. Six people were arrested."
Hip-Hop Fridays: Davey D's Exclusive Interview With Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney 8/18/02 Black Electorate
Kissinger joins protests at Bush plan to attack Iraq 8/17/02 Independent, UK: "The names who have come forward this week to express scepticism or outright opposition to a military invasion could not be more high-profile: Henry Kissinger, the primary architect of American foreign and security policy during the second half of the Cold War, who is considered something of a Delphic oracle by many Americans; Brent Scowcroft, who served as national security adviser to George Bush Snr and is still close to the whole Bush family; and Lawrence Eagleburger, another veteran from the Reagan-Bush era who briefly served as Secretary of State after the 1991 Gulf War."
Congresswoman MckInney Freedom Ride!!! 8/16/02 Black World Today: "I spoke first, and was able to say to Gephardt that the Democratic non-response to this veteran lawmaker's re-election campaign is seen as cowardly and disloyal by the American people. I pointed out that McKinney has opened up an entirely new voting bloc in the Arab-American population, that her organizational skills are awesome. I believe McKinney is the link between Black and White progressives and that lack of Democratic support shows lack of vision and lack of loyalty by the party. I told Gephardt that people have no reason to be Democrats because the Democrats do not support their own, as evidenced by how they are dealing with Congresswoman McKinney. Further, the lack of response on the Democratic party is seen as racially biased, and that if they have any hopes for 2004, they must support the Congresswoman now."
Pax Christi urges civil disobedience if U.S. escalates war on Iraq 8/16/02 National Catholic Reporter: "The civil disobedience pledge was sponsored by eight national peace groups. In addition to Pax Christi USA they include the American Friends Service Committee, Education for Peace in Iraq Center, Episcopal Peace Fellowship, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Lutheran Peace Fellowship, National Network to End the War against Iraq, and Voices in the Wilderness. The petition, which was circulated for signatures at the assembly, indicates willingness “to join with others to engage in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience at U.S. federal facilities in order to prevent or halt the death and destruction that U.S. military action causes the people of Iraq.”
Congresswoman McKinney under attack: please help 8/10/02 AfroCubaWeb: "Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, a Georgia African American Democrat, has been the most outspoken person in Congress against the war on terrorism, attacks on our civil rights, the corporate robbery of the government and the plight of the Palestinians."
Bush, Sharon and US defense contractors sued 7/21/02 Arab News, Saudi Arabia: "A Washington-based human rights group filed a lawsuit this week against Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, President George Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell and United States defense contractors as well as some Christian and Jewish organizations that are financially supporting the development of an illegal settlements in the Palestinian Occupied Territories."
Campaigners begin legal battle to shut down Camp X-Ray 7/10/02 Independent, UK
CNN chief accuses Israel of terror 6/18/02 Guardian: "Ted Turner, the billionaire founder of CNN, accuses Israel today of engaging in "terrorism" against the Palestinians, in comments that threaten to lead to a further decline in the news network's already poor relations with the Jewish state.
"Aren't the Israelis and the Palestinians both terrorising each other?" says Turner, who is vice-chairman of AOL Time Warner, which owns CNN, in an exclusive interview with the Guardian."
Peace activists say support for cause growing after Sept. 11 6/16/02 AP: "I was talking with a colleague in Vermont a few weeks ago," Lynch said. "She said there were 12 new peace groups in her area that had just popped up out of nowhere that didn't exist six months ago. These were just people who got together and felt like they needed to do something."
US artists damn 'war without limit' 6/14/02 Guardian: "Clark Kissinger, another of the organisers, said they had been heartened by the number of people wanting to sign.
Mr Kissinger, one of the organisers of the first anti-Vietnam war marches on Washington in 1965, said he was receiving about 60 emails a day from people who wanted to add their name to the list."
Harboring Terrorists: Our Own List Is Long 6/13/02 Black World Today
Mr Bush's titanic war on terror will eventually sink beneath the waves 6/12/02 Independent: ". But not a single citizen from Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan has been accused of plotting the atrocities of 11 September. The suicide-hijackers came principally from Saudi Arabia, with one from Egypt and another from Lebanon. The men whom the Moroccans have arrested – all supposedly linked to al-Qa'ida – are all Saudis.
Yet Saudis – who comprised the vast majority of the September killers – are going to have no problems entering the US under the new security rules."
Rally Opposes War, Defends Civil Liberties 6/11/02 Black World Today: "Originally planned for across the street in Washington Square Park, the rain led rally-goers to a standing-room-only crowd inside. The rally was part of a nationwide kickoff, organized by the Not In Our Name Project, of activists taking a "pledge of resistance" against war and the erosion of civil liberties." See Not in our name.
NATIONAL PEACE RALLY - MAY 26 6/6/02 McDill Peace Rally: "Our march and rally did not only do the obvious with our call for peace and an end to the war, we also recognized that in the final analysis the nature of the system we are struggling with is expressed most constantly here within the U.S.
This was seen as the significance of the presence of Ian Harvey on the platform, a symbol of the closed society that won't tolerate an example of a school teacher who is actively standing up for peace.
This is also the significance of Vernon Bellacourt, a representative of the American Indian Movement, the first victim of an unending terror within what is now known as the U.S. of America."
Civil Disobedience at the U.S. Central Command 6/6/02 Strike The Root: "The overreaction by the Tampa police to this small, peaceful demonstration and nonviolent, unresisting civil disobedience is a sign of the disintegration of our civil liberties in the past few months. This paramilitary organization tried vainly to intimidate us and control our ability to speak out at this rally."
University of California Faculty Support Divestment from Israel 6/5/02 Aztlan: "Faculty members from the University of California system have come forward in support of a campaign to divest from Israel. The divestment campaign is spearheaded by the UC Berkeley chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). The campaign gained momentum recently because of the Israeli massacres in Jenin and Bethlehem and the group's April 9th National Day of Action and Divestment in which the SJP occupied a UC Berkeley building. During this action 79 activists were arrested including 41students. Thus far 143 UC professors have signed the University of California Faculty Petition for Divestment from Israel, which can be found at http://www.ucdivest.org."
Top Democrat Slams DOJ Terror Guidelines 5/31/02 Common Dreams: "The administration's continued defiance of constitutional safeguards seems to have no end in sight," Conyers said in a written statement. "This decision decimates the Fourth Amendment."
Is truth a victim? 5/17/02 BBC: Funny how these interviews of Dan Rather talking about the patriotism madness in the US media only appear in the UK: "It's been coined "Milatainment" - entertainment programmes about the military, which include the shows Military Diaries, American Fighter Pilot and Profiles from the Front Line."
Feature / U.S. Jews opposing Israel are increasingly vocal 5/17/02 Haaretz, Israel: "On the fringes of the pro-Israel solidarity marches, the fund-raising events in support of Israel's military efforts, and American Jews' solidarity missions to Israel, several U.S.-Jewish groups have started to make their voices heard. Far from echoing the line that America's Jewish communities have been espousing, these new voices are critical of Israeli operations in the territories, and are calling for an end to the occupation and respect for Palestinian rights."
108 Rabbis-to-Be Sign in Sympathy With Palestinians 5/16/02 NY Observer: "Ms. Weintraub said she felt physically threatened. Then one of the men surrounding her recognized the dynamics of the confrontation—which was being taped, after all—and said, "We’re empowering her." And the group backed away.
For the rabbinical students, that was the revelation of the rally. Rather than being intimidated by displays of right-wing solidarity, they felt galvanized. They came back to New York with a strong sense that they had done the right thing, and that they have a voice in their community. There had been 50 rabbinical students at the Washington rally. Ten days later, they sent off their letter calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state, and a recognition of Palestinian suffering, to the heads of Jewish organizations, and it was signed by 108 people. That list includes a quarter of the rabbinical students at the Jewish Theological Seminary (though none from the Orthodox Yeshiva University). "
Tipping Toward Hate 5/15/02 Village Voice: Battles are raging on campuses across the US: "criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic because other countries do things that are far worse and nobody complains. Besides, he adds, when individual Israeli soldiers commit questionable acts, they are tried and punished. As a state, he insists, "Israel doesn't commit human rights abuses. Any you can name, I can justify. Anything they do in the West Bank is purely for self-defense."

After Sept. 11, hip-hop raises dissenting voices 5/5/02 Boston Globe: "Some criticize the military action in Afghanistan, and others are cynical about the praise heaped upon the New York Police Department. Several songs scoff at the country's flag-waving fervor, and one accuses the government of directly sponsoring the attacks on the World Trade Center."
Seymour Says 5/1/02 Chicago Mag: New Yorker's Seymour Hersh opines on the destruction of the US constitution, Ashcroft the lunatic, the war in Afghanistan: "We've had many more casualties than they've told you about. We've had no discussion of the casualties among our special forces, where we have as many as 1,800 people operating there. And the Brits have people there, the Australians have people there, the Canadians have people there, the New Zealanders have teams there. All of them have suffered casualties that you don't know about…. "Where are the Democrats? Where are the Republicans who know better? The people that talk the most to me . . . are the dedicated military people. I've known them forever, and they're terrified. They think we've lost the war on terror."
MIT, Harvard Faculty Petition Universities’ Israel Investments 5/1/02 UC Divest: "Their proposal calls for the removal of financial support for Israel by the universities until Israel “withdraws all forces and vacates all existing settlements in the occupied territories, ends legal torture, and either allows refugees to return to their homeland or compensate them for their losses.”
To date 32 MIT faculty members and about 12 Harvard faculty members have signed the joint petition, which is modeled after a similar petition submitted to the administration of Princeton University on April 18, said Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences Nancy Kanwisher ’80. Kanwisher is coordinating the joint effort between the universities."
The Intifada reaches the ivory tower 4/25/02 UC Divestment: "The first time that the international scientific community imposed a boycott on a state was during the apartheid regime in South Africa. The second time is being considered at present, and now the boycott is directed against Israel and its policy in the territories."

At least 20,000 decry Bush's Mideast policy, Israeli actions 4/21/02 San Francisco Chronicle: "In one of the largest Bay Area protests in recent years, at least 20, 000 people marched through San Francisco yesterday in opposition to U.S. policy in the Mideast, transforming 2 miles of city streets into a sea of red, green, black and white Palestinian flags."
Tens of thousands gather in Washington for largest pro-Palestinian protest in US 4/21/02 Yahoo: "Waving signs equating Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and wearing the traditional Arab headdress, or keffiyah, crowds massed on the Ellipse in front of the White House to voice their disapproval of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and US Middle East policy.
Police estimated that around 50,000 people took part in the peaceful protest although organizers, a coalition pro-Palestinian pressure groups, put the figure at 100,000."
Protesters March Peacefully in D.C. 4/20/02 AP: "The various groups converged for a concluding rally near the Capitol and support for the Palestinians' cause was the main theme of the day. Authorities do not provide official crowd figures for demonstrations in Washington, but Police Chief Charles Ramsey gave a rough estimate of 35,000 to 50,000."

Following Bush’s remarks, Wolff said he opposes the war because it will make a difficult situation worse.

Activists Mobilize To Prevent Africa From Being The Next Target In Bush's War Against Terrorism 12/21/01 The Black World Today: "However, most people don't realize that this same Sharon, also operating as defense minister of Israel, a year earlier had visited then-apartheid South Africa and conspired with the racist state against the best interests of the African national liberation struggle in southern Africa. While there, in company of his hosts, Sharon paid a side visit to South Africa's border with Namibia where he spent a great deal of time hobnobbing with South African military forces deployed there. He conferred with them about ways to better defend their position against the "terrorists" who were attacking the racist regime from the then-South West Africa territory under Pretoria's harsh colonial rule. The "terrorists" that Sharon was concerned about were members of the People's Liberation of Namibia (PLAN), the military wing of SWAPO, the South West Africa People's Organization - officially recognized by the United Nations as the "sole representatives of the people of Namibia." SWAPO and PLAN, along with FAPLA (the Peoples Armed Forces of Angola) and the Cuban Internationalist Forces sent to Angola by President Fidel Castro, had join forces to defend the Angolans and Namibians in their resistance against the brutal military force of Africa's most formidable nation state…. All those wanting to learn more about mobilizing to stop the Bush regime from targeting Somalia, Libya, Sudan, or any other African country to submit to the dictates of U.S. and European Union globalization, as well as forcing the U.S. to end its dishonest, one-sided policy regarding Israel over the Palestinians, or co-opting Afghan national interests into kowtowing to western political or economic interests, are encouraged to attend Friday's historic program. We also had a number of independent documentary video-makers there. The tough news is that we were completely iced out by the mainstream media. People in other U.S. cities are experiencing similar marginalization, and the question arises to what extent this is a function of the current patriotic hysteria, concerns for market share, and fear of finding themselves attacked for giving coverage to those targeted by Ashcroft and Lynn Cheney or of losing access, or to what extent it is a function of more direct Administration intervention with the news media."

THE WAR CONSPIRACY - Peter Dale Scott 11/15/01 Guerrilla News Network: First aired in September, remains topical: "The Taliban should not be identified with bin Laden. But the press is tending to do that. It's a colossal misunderstanding. And there are elements in the Taliban, just as there are elements in Pakistan who want to get rid of bin Laden. One of the Taliban leaders said that Afghanistan should give over bin Laden to be tried in an Islamic court in another country. They don't want to give him up to U.S. justice which, I think, in the Middle East context, is understandable. But they would give him up to an Islamic court. And we should be leaping at that opportunity. It's being suppressed because it runs against the agenda of having a bigger CIA and bigger U.S. military operation in the Middle East."
Anti-war students strategize 11/12/01 Contra Costa Times: "Bracing for the possibility of a protracted war in Afghanistan, students from dozens of colleges along the West Coast met at UC Berkeley over the weekend to plot a long-term anti-war strategy.
In two days of workshops, panel discussions and plenary sessions, some 180 delegates to the West Coast Conference for Campus-based Antiwar Coalitions resolved to try to make their anti-war movement more broadbased by reaching outside the university environment.
They voted to form a committee of representatives from each campus anti-war coalition to coordinate future actions. They also debated whether their movement should target globalization, consumerism, capitalism and racism in its anti-war message or focus on the point of broader consensus: stopping the war.
In all, about 600 students attended the conference, said Snehal Shingavi, a UC Berkeley student who was a master of ceremonies at Sunday's plenary session. More than 60 campuses, including one in Mexico, sent a maximum of five delegates to the conference. Delegates were picked by anti-war activists on their respective campuses."

Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox rabbis from some of the area's most prominent synagogues, as well as the heads of the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and the Jewish Community Relations Council, gathered to criticize the protest by the Episcopal bishops and some of the subsequent comments by other Christian leaders."
More Christian leaders voice concern over Israeli actions 11/2/01 Boston Globe: "Christian leaders from around Massachusetts yesterday added their voices to those of three Episcopal bishops calling for greater concern for Palestinian rights, as Jewish leaders decried the Tuesday protest by the bishops outside the Israeli consulate in Boston as unfairly one-sided."
Op-Ed Echo Chamber: Little space for dissent to the military line 11/2/01 FAIR: When the full extent of the US crimes committed in this war become known, we can point to this as one of the guilty mechanisms.
ANALYSIS OF U.S. ANTIWAR STRUGGLE 11/1/01 IndyMedia: "Yet, in such inhospitable soil, a mass antiwar movement is growing in our country faster than Jack’s Beanstalk. What such a movement may or may not accomplish is the subject of this article, moving from the particular of a peace rally in a semi-rural region of New York State to the general prospects for U.S. peace forces…. Noting that the right-wing defined the rally as being “pro-Taliban,” one of the speakers said that “Such a designation contains a certain historical irony. During the 1980s, when the United States was massively intervening in the Afghan civil war, albeit clandestinely, many on the left warned that this would result in the overthrow of Afghanistan’s first progressive government and its replacement by a backward, right-wing fundamentalist element. This of course is what happened, resulting in the ascension to power of the ultra-conservative Taliban. At the time, our critics labeled opponents of the Taliban as communists. Now they label us Talabandistas as well as 'commies' for opposing this second U.S. intervention in Afghanistan. Then we were told to ‘go back to Russia.’ Now we have been told to ‘go back to Afghanistan.’ Historical accuracy has never been the far-right’s strong point.”

Police photograph peace vigil crowd
, Worcester
Telegraph, Worcester MA, 10/11 - on orders from the FBI. Worcester Peace Works,
which organized the vigil, responded with some interesting tactics: 1) attempted to
get police ID, 2) publicized the J Edgar like event in the media and 3)
wrote a letter to the police "asking for an apology and demanding that
Worcester Peace Works be supplied with a list of groups that local, state
or federal agencies have photographed or put under surveillance in
Worcester since Sept. 11. It asks to be provided with a list of all agency
personnel who have been provided with Worcester police photos, files and
reports on Worcester Peace Works and for return of all photos, negatives
and files of vigil participants. And it asks for police protocols on an
officer's obligation to identify himself or herself when asked, and for a
copy of the policy on the circumstances under which groups engaged in
free-speech activities are to be photographed by the Worcester Police
Department." This elicited evasional behavior from said police department
almost worthy of Bin Ladin himself.
