MultiArts Projects & Productions Announces
Spring 1998 U.S. Tour of
Cuba's Legendary Los Muñequitos de Matanzas

"...spectacular sensual dancing and some of the most complex drumming to be heard
in this hemisphere..." (The New York Times)

"The Reigning Regents of Rumba" (San Francisco Chronicle)

Return to the US for 16-City Tour
March 13 - April 28, 1998

Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Cuba's leading rumba practitioners, return to the U.S. in March and April for a national tour touching sixteen cities in eight weeks. The tour has been produced by New York City's MultiArts Projects & Productions (MAPP). Beginning with an engagement at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, IL, March 13-15, the tour continues through April 28 with performances and residency activities in Columbus, OH; Ann Arbor, MI; Glassboro, NJ; New York, NY; Cambridge, MA; Hanover, NH; Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco & Arcata, CA; Scottsdale and Tucson, AZ; Houston and Dallas, TX; and Seattle, WA.

These engagements mark the group’s fourth U.S. tour in their 46-year history. Performances, workshops and lecture-demonstrations are scheduled at universities, art centers and festivals throughout the country. A complete schedule of performances follows this release.

Los Muñequitos de Matanzas are among the highest regarded practitioners of rumba and the unequivocal masters of Afro-Cuban ritual music in the world. This legendary ensemble of drummers, singers and dancers was founded in 1952 in Matanzas, Cuba, a city whose streets seem to breathe African religion and culture. More than 40 years later, the musicians and dancers of Los Muñequitos are recognized by Cubans and throughout the world as members of the most vital ensemble to sustain and popularize the African roots of Cuban culture.

Los Muñequitos' new program, Kalenda, is filled with explosive rhythms and captivating dance, continuing the excitement begun six years ago with their debut U.S. tour. Kalenda celebrates many aspects of African and Afro-Cuban folklore, religious rituals and rhythms. The rumba of the Muñequitos is a contemporary art; the religious traditions in their repertoire tie the past to the present and the future. Their performances allow audiences to witness the vibrant culture of the African Diaspora intrinsic to Cuba's living legacy.

In addition to their tremendously successful U.S. tours, Los Muñequitos has toured extensively in Canada, Brazil and Great Britain. In 1995 the group made its historic first visit to Puerto Rico where thousands turned out for their performances. The ensemble has released six CDs on Qbadisc. Their latest CD (for release in March), Los Muñequitos de Matanzas Live in New York, was recorded at Symphony Space in 1992 during their first U.S. tour.

From a Muñequitos fan to AfroCubaWeb

I learned of the performance in Scottsdale last Saturday from your website, ordered the tickets by phone,
and drove 800 miles from Pueblo Colorado for the performance. I have seen many things in my 44 years,
great jazz performnaces, great cuban musicians, but I have never been witness to anything quite like this! I have been a fan of the Munequitos for several years and I can tell you that the CD's and Videos are but the tip of the iceberg compared to being there. Israel Berriel Gonzalez held the audience spellbound for 45 minutes with one offering after another and
the percussion and dance were so captivating that you hardly realized that several hours had passed when it was over. The crowd in Scottdale was more of the symphony going "society" type and I was concerned that they would not understand nor appreciate what they were about to witness, however the performance was so powerful that it transcended all the barriers that we are so quick to place between ourselves and other cultures here in the US.

There is a new member of the group who I believe is the son of Vivian Ramos, about 7 or so years old and already learning to be a master Rumbero. During the 800 mile return trip I still had visions of the performance and Israel Berriel Gonzalez ringing in my head. Before I knew it I was home. It is thanks to your website that I was able to be there, living here I would never have known.  Thanks.

Sincerely;
JC
Colorado
