Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC)

ICAIC is under  new management and we await details.

ICAIC was headed up by Alfredo Guevera, of the old guard.  He once proclaimed Cuba's cultural heritage to stem from Rome, which perhaps explains why there were so few AfroCuban film directors working under him.  Fidel Castro actually set him straight on that occasion.  (For more on Fidel's role in these matters in Cuba, see Race & Identity in Cuba.)

Towards the beginning of ICAIC, a number of films on AfroCuban history were made, such as the Last Supper, in a series colloquially known as negrometrages.  However, they always had to do with the distant past, the 19th and 18th century, not with today's Cuba.   There has long been a serious underepresentation of the AfroCuban point of view and presence in Cuban media and this has only recently begun to be corrected thanks to younger ministers such as Minister of Culture Abel Prieto and others.
