Rumba in October, 10/04top

Catherine Evleshin, widely recognized performer and teacher of Cuban dance and culture, will offer a four  week special workshop in la rumba, the quintessential Creole dance and music that distinguishes Cuban dancers.  La rumba developed in Cuba in centuries past, and today informs popular and theatrical expressions far beyond Cuba's borders.

Two forms of la rumba cubana will be taught with live percussion featuring Cuban master drumer and rumbero Ysidro Valor, seen in Portland performing with Omo Ire earlier this year.  Yambu or the rumba de cajon, named for the box drums that accompany the dance, represents the tender respect of long-time couples, while displaying an elegant earthiness with undulating isolations.  El guaguanco is the faster rumba showing the chase and flirtation of would-be lovers. Also, early mimetic rumbas and related creole and popular forms such as the conga/comparsa and mozambique  will be presented.

No partner needed.  Women bring a full skirt.  All levels will be challenged.  Videos from Cuba will show a variety of authentic styles.  Todos cubanos se invitan gratis.

Classes will be held at Center Space, 420 SE Sixth Ave. (near Stark) Fridays 6:30-8 pm October 8-29.  $9 per class or $30 for the four-week session.  Info: call (971)207-0324
