Xiomara Alfaro

Beginning with her stint as a singer and dancer with Katherine Dunham’s touring troupe, Xiomara Alfaro has made a name for herself as a consummate musician. She sang in the chorus that backed Celia Cruz and Olga Guillot at the Flamingo in Las Vegas and also appeared in films most notably ‘Mambo’, with Italian actress Sylvana Mangano. She has recorded over 28 records and has toured 32 countries.

A Night of Afro-Cuban Jazz at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture and History

Featuring Xiomara Alfaro

Join us tonight, Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at 7:00 PM for an exciting evening of Afro-Cuban Jazz. Learn something about the music and its history with free reprints from Latin Beat Magazine and discussion with the performers. The music for the evening features the legendary Xiomara Alfaro.

Join us as this legendary vocalist and her husband pianist Rafael Benitez explain and demonstrate the evolution of Afro-Cuban Jazz. Woody Williams joins them on Drums with Neil Starkey on Acoustic Bass and Hassan Ortiz on Tumbadora (Jicamo).

This program is free and open to the public!

The Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture and History is a special Library of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.
