Calendar: Afro-Cuban Jazz Pianist Jesus "Chucho" Valdez: A Public Interview When: March 29, 2000, 6:30pm to 8:00pm Bring your children, friends, and students to participate in a free public interview program with the world-class Cuban pianist Jesus "Chucho" Valdez at the Kennedy Center in the Educational Resource Room, Terrace Level March 29, 6:30-8 p.m. This public interview program is brought to you by the Kennedy Center Education Department Performance Plus Program in collaboration with the TransAfrica Forum, and the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and the Program in African-American Culture at the National Museum of American History. The interview with Chucho Valdez is part of a year-long TransAfrica Forum project entitled Afro America in Cuba: A Cultural Exchange, a collaborative project designed to build closer relations between Afro Americans and the Cuban people through exploration and celebration of the historical and contemporary ties that unite the communities in the arts, culture, sports, and education. The public interview and audience conversation with Chucho is one among a series of programs that will be held in the United States and Cuba during 2000 to 2001. Come out, ask questions, and talk with Chucho about his pioneering work with the Cuban jazz group Irakere and his musical projects with Santeria Yoruba singers. He will be interviewed by Willard Jenkins noted jazz educator, Jazz Times journalist, and BET Television and WPFW-Pacifica radio jazz hosts. Renowned New York-based music collector, producer, educator, and Smithsonian research Associate Rene Lopez will participate in the interview. Chucho will perform a solo concert in the Kennedy Center Jazz series the
