Elio
Rodriguez: Puzzled 4/1/2016 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel: "Join us next week
at 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel for the opening reception of Puzzled, Elio
Rodriguez’ first solo exhibition in New York City. The show is on view until May
9th and will coincide with his exhibition On Guard at Harvard University’s
Hutchins Center for Afro-Latin Studies and at our gallery’s booth at Context Art
New York at Pier 94, May 4-8, 2016."
EN VOZ ALTA 2/27/2016 532
Gallery Thomas Jaeckel: "We are pleased to present En Voz Alta (Aloud), an
exhibition of works by twelve Cuban-born artists: María Magdalena Campos-Pons,
Alberto Casado, Duvier del Dago, Meira Marrero & José Toirac, Liudmila & Nelson,
Yunier Hernandez, Joseph Michael Lopez, Armando Mariño, Douglas Pérez Castro,
Reynerio Tamayo, Carlos Rodríguez Cárdenas, and Elio Rodríguez – seven living in
Havana, four in the United States and one in Europe."
In Conversation: Elio Rodríguez 5/12/2015 Cuban Art News: "This month,
artist Elio Rodríguez completes a semester-long fellowship in Harvard
University’s Afro-Latin American Research Institute and Hutchins Center for
African & African American Research. In an email interview, he talks about the
experience and what comes next."
Cuban resilience shines at Harvard, heroes take flight at BU 5/5/2015 Boston
Globe: "Elio Rodríguez Valdés’s “Selva en las Paredes?/ Jungle on the Walls”
visits the same contradictions. Soft sculptures, abstracted figures made of
white leather, dance across the wall. Look closer, and you’ll see chains and
padlocks. Are they dancing now?"
At Crossroads: The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery 4/21/2015 Harvard Crimson: "The
first visible piece of artwork from the gallery’s current exhibit,
“Drapetomanía: Grupo Antillano and the Art of Afro-Cuba” is an intricate, white
leather sculpture called “Selva en las Paredes” by the Cuban artist Elio
Rodríguez Valdés. The foyer’s Entry Gallery is one of what Grant terms
“curatorial moments,” and it branches in one direction to the ensuing Ramp
Gallery and other artwork and in another towards the auxiliary ACT (Art,
Community, and Teaching) Room, which is a technology-enabled venue for community
events."
Spring Colloquium with Elio Rodriguez 12/21/2014 Afro-Latin American
Research Institute, Harvard University: On 2/11/2015, in Cambridge, MA - "My
goal is to continue to explore the complex relationships between being Cuban,
being black and, as both Cuban and a person of African descent, member of wider
diasporic communities that cannot be contained by the traditional geographic
boundaries of the nation state. How do these identities and labels evolve in
place(s) of residence that do not easily coexist with or sustain them?"
Elio Rodríguez exhibe 'Presión contenida' en Valencia 12/10/2014 Diario de
Cuba: "Elio Rodríguez (La Habana, 1966) reside actualmente en España. Entre sus
exposiciones personales recientes figuran: Corridas y venidas (2014) y

Art exhibit explores Cuba’s African heritage 5/25/2010 Repeating
Islands: "Artists participating in the show will include Belkis Ayán, Manuel
Mendive, Bernado Almoguea and René Peña. Ayón, a lithographer, explored
Afro-Cuban religion. Her worked combined the myth of Sikan and the traditions of
the Abakuá, a men’s secret society. She committed suicide at the age of 32.
Mendive, who also emerged from the revolutionary road, has received numerous
awards for his work. He has participated in many group and solo art exhibitions
in Cuba and Europe. Almoguea is known for painting brightly coloured,
politically probing works from his government-owned potato stand. A self-taught
photographer, Peña explores the problems of racial and social minorities in his
art. His works are part of private collections in Cuba, Italy, the United
States, Switzerland, Belgium and Argentina, among other countries. In all, 26
artists will participate in the exhibition, which will show about 80 works. They
include the internationally acclaimed artists Joe Bedía, Yoan Capote, Carlos
Garaicoa, Armando Mariño, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Elio Rodríguez, Douglas
Pérez and Roberto Diago. “The City is proud to be part of such an event that
will bring the Cuban touch to our doorstep, and that our citizens will be able
to share this wonderful and unique experience,” it said."
Blackness and Racism in Cuba: International Exhibitions Shows in Havana,
Pittsburgh, and Johannesburg 4/12/2010 Cuban Art Newsx: "Half a century
ago, the Cuban Revolution brought about immediate positive changes for Cubans of
African descent, as the country undertook the task of eliminating racial
discrimination at workplaces, social centers, educational institutions, and in
official policy. The government implemented concrete measures to more fully
integrate blacks into the island’s social and economic life, from which had they
had been more or less excluded since the turn of the 20th century. But lately,
debates held across the island have pointed up the contradictions in this stated
policy of equality, including the harsh realities of everyday racism and the
persistence of white dominance of official history."
