Ricardo Lemvo
and Makina Loca

Ricardo Lemvo was born in the Congo and grew up listening to the Cuban greats -- Orquesta Aragón, Arsenio Rodríguez, Sonora Matancera and Abelardo Barroso. After moving to LA, he founded Makina Loca in 1990 to create a new blend of Cuban and Congo music.  This blend has a long and respectable tradition behind it, as it occured before at a different level in the Congo where they were blended in the 50's by musicians such as Franco, Dr. Nico, Tabu Ley, and others. Stupendous music and it's very popular in Cuba.  Recently, he has entered into a relationship with a booking agent, Ritmo Artists.

Bio from the Liner Notes to Mambo Yo Yo

I was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire. My roots reach all the way to San Salvador in northern Angola where my grandfathers, Don João Matantu N'lemvo and Andrada Andrè, were born...

Although exposed to Cuban music since childhood, my formal introduction took place during one of the school breaks. My cousin, Hetman Ne-Kongo, had a huge record collection. I spent hours listening to Orquesta Aragón, Arsenio Rodríguez, Sonora Matancera and Abelardo Barroso.

At the time, I did not understand the lyrics, but the rhythms, the melody, and the spirit of the music touched me deeply. Whenever I heard Barroso and Ignacio Piñeiro, I felt a strong connection. In their songs I heard the drums and the voices of Africa. I was overcome by emotion when I realized that this was the music that my enslaved ancestors took with them to the Americas...

In college, I began collecting Cuban records and met many French-speaking Africans who shared my passion for Cuban music. Most were "purists" who did not like the salsa from New York, unless it was Johnny Pacheco. To many African aficionados of Cuban music, Pacheco was a god because he played the son montuno and charanga style that is revered throughout the continent. The influence of Cuban music in Africa is immeasurable. When Cuban music traveled back to Africa  it was instantly recognized and embraced...

In 1990, I formed Makina Loca in order to combine the two schools of music I adore: Congolese rumba and Cuban son montuno. This idea was not new. The foundation had been laid by the founding fathers of Congolese rumba-Grand Kallè & African Jazz, Tabu Ley, Dr Nico Kasanda, and Franco's T.P. OK Jazz. In the 1950's and 1960's, Congolese bands were performing Cuban songs in phonetic Spanish as well as adapting the arrangements to fit Congolese languages. This is how Congolese rumba and soukous came to be...

With Makina Loca my goal has been to expand Kallè and Franco's ideas by africanizing the soul of Cuban music-son montuno. The introduction of Congolese guitar, and singing in Kikongo, Lingala, and Spanish has enabled me to create a mosaic of sounds.

Through my songs, I hope to share my Congolese heritage with others. With Mambo Yo Yo I have continued to develop the idea of synchronizing the sounds of my Congolese roots with those of Cuba's African diaspora...

[AfroCubaWeb's Note: the Mayombe in the Cuban religious term Palo Monte Mayombe stems from the Mayombe forest, a large forest on the border of Angola and the Congo, where people come from many miles to pay homage to certain trees.]
