Omar Sosa

Hip Hop Jazz composer Omar Sosa hails from Cuba and lives in Northern California since 1995.

From his label:

"There's an invigorating new jazz sound coming from Cuba, a music of great virtuosity and innovation drawing on a wide range of musical tradition - from Latin jazz to straight-ahead to European classical music. One of the leading ambassadors of this new Cuban sound is Omar Sosa.

The marriage of jazz and Cuban music - New World cousins related by African ancestry - has given birth to some of the most intoxicating music of the past 50 years. In New York in the late '40s, Dizzy Gillespie and the fabled Cuban conguero Chano Pozo created a bracing new music merging Cuban polyrhythms with modern jazz harmony and improvisation. In Havana, a decade later, the legendary bassist-composer Isreal "Cachao" Lopez fused mambo and jazz in  late-night jam sessions that fueled Latin jazz and salsa. Today, young Cuban players are making remarkable music drawing on an even wider range of sounds - secular and sacred AfroCuban forms, bebop, classical music, pop tunes, modal and free jazz.

The original, free-flowing Omar Sosa comes to us from this vein. His impressionistic music encompasses cha-cha grooves and Monkish phrases, Yoruba chants, hip-hop beats and rhapsodic melodies. The award-winning Cuban composer and pianist brings the economy of Thelonius Monk and the melodic richness of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea to the rhythmic power of AfroCuban music.

Since his arrival in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1995, Omar Sosa has invigorated the local Latin jazz scene with his explosive, adventurous playing. The next year Omar made his U.S. recording debut with "Omar Omar" (OTA1001), a stunning album marked by unorthodox technique, rhythmic energy and harmonic daring. In 1997 Omar released "Free Roots" (OTA1003), featuring 14 musicians, including Cuban percussionist Jesus Diaz, drummer Elliot Kavee, and rapper Will Power. In it Sosa reveals more of his musical imagination which, though grounded in his AfroCuban experience, is eclectic, mysterious, wryly humorous, and wonderfully improvisational. "Free Roots" was greeted with widespread critical acclaim, and was selected by Paris music critic Remy Kolpa Kopoul as #1 Album on the Year in France.

Also during 1997, Omar began his ongoing collaboration with noted Bay Area percussionist and educator John Santos. They released a live duo recording entitled "Nfumbe" (OTA1004) in conjunction with their appearance at the San Francisco Jazz Festival. Omar has performed recently with his quartet at the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Stanford Jazz Festival, the Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Also in 1998 Omar enjoyed two successful tour of France.

Omar's latest CD "Spirit Of The Roots" (OTA1005) features over 30 musicians, including Cuban percussionists Pancho Quinto and Orestes Vilato. In this new CD Omar combines his musical roots in Cuban popular music and Yoruba spiritual practice with jazz, hip-hop and music from the black folkloric tradition of Esmeraldas on the north coast of Ecuador. It is a passionate, playful and original work.

"SPIRIT OF THE ROOTS, the second CD in Omar Sosa's Roots Trilogy, fuses the Afro musical traditions of Cuba, Ecuador and North America. He is part of a new generation of Latin musicians who are exploring Latin jazz beyond its traditional cubop-centrisms.

On several tracks Sosa introduces Afro-Ecuadorian percussive instruments, chorus, and rhythms. Indeed many Afro-American rhythms remain to be explored in Latin jazz. "It's my head" begins as an African cut. Ecuadorian, Cuban, and Hip-Hop vocalists exchange brief commentaries before Sosa goes into one of his percussive piano solos. Although there is use of vocal chants and phrases, rather than dominate the music, these only add to the rhythmic pulse."

"Sosa's pianisms evoke distant echoes of McCoy Tyner's power, Keith Jarrett's improvisational flights of fancy, and Thelonious Monk's angular harmonies, transforming the piano into 88 well-tuned drums".
-Village Voice (Eugene Holley), February 18, 2004

"Sosa's syncretic worldview is a welcome mix of the sacred and the secular,

offering an aural representation of our sepia-toned, syncopated

citizenship".

Accompanying Omar will be Gustavo Ovalles (percussion) and Martha Galarraga (vocals), both members of Omar's current touring and recording ensemble.

We are also pleased to announce that Omar Sosa has received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation in New York to support the development and production of "From Our Mother", Omar's work for symphony orchestra and folkloric ensemble, scheduled for debut in early 2003 with the Oakland East Bay Symphony under the direction of conductor Michael Morgan. The new grant comes in association with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Omar's ongoing sponsor of the work.

In January 2002 Omar will tour in France with percussionist Gustavo Ovalles in a series of Duo performances. Paris concerts include two nights at the Musée Dapper, January 25 and 26. Full schedule to follow in our next newsletter, or check www.melodia.com. Omar's next recording project will be released worldwide on March 12, 2002. Entitled "Sentir", Omar continues his genre-expanding fusion of traditional voices and rhythms from Cuba, Morocco and Venezuela together with contemporary jazz harmonies and spoken word. Omar brings together the guembri, a traditional stringed instrument from the Gnawa culture of North Africa, with bata drums, Afro-Venezuelan percussion instruments, and singing from all three cultures. Featured on the CD are Moroccan vocalist and multi-instrumentalist El Houssaine Kili, Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles and Yoruba (Cuban) vocalist Martha Galarraga. The result is a World Jazz sound infused throughout with a sense of freedom and spontaneity.

Omar's first tour in the United States with his Septet is scheduled for April 2 to May 8, 2002. Venues interested in presenting the band can contact OTA Records at 510-339-3389 or email music@melodia.com.

Dear Friends,

We are happy to announce the release the Omar Sosa's newest CD, entitled "Bembon". Like his CDs "Free Roots" and "Spirit Of The Roots", this new large-ensemble recording is an amazing fusion of Cuban, jazz, spoken word, and world music elements. Omar's is a World Jazz vision, gracefully weaving a tapestry of musical threads from Afro-Ecuadorian, Afro-Cuban and Afro-American traditions. His subtle mixture of rhythms, harmonies, voices, and instruments is an exploration of Latin jazz beyond its traditional Cubop expressions. Omar Sosa is a year 2000 mix of Thelonious Monk back from the beyond and Eddie Palmieri in the full-blown and innocent spirit of his youth. "Bembon" will be in stores in the United States, France, and Japan on March 14, 2000.

Omar begins his Spring and Summer tour schedule in the San Francisco Bay Area. Coming up in March is Omar's San Francisco Solo Piano Concert Debut:

Saturday, March 25 Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Forum  701 Mission, San Francisco Tickets: 415-978-2787

Also in March, Omar joins Bay Area percussionist John Santos for three of their special Duo concerts:

Friday, March 17 Noe Valley Ministry San Francisco

Saturday, March 18 La Pena Cultural Center Berkeley

Sunday, March 19 Fuel 44 San Jose

Omar's new CD "Bembon" was recorded and mixed in Quito, Ecuador during the summer of 1999. It features musical themes from the Esmeraldas region of Ecuador, the Lucumi culture of Cuba, and from black American R&B and hip-hop forms. For the first time, Omar uses a classical string quartet to unite these elements. "Bembon" features contributions from Cuban percussion masters Orestes Vilato and Pancho Quinto, and from Ecuador's Papa Roncon. Also featured from Omar's core quintet are drummer Elliot Kavee, bassist Geoff Brennan, saxophonist Sheldon Brown, and the spoken word artistry of Will Power.

Omar will return to the San Francisco area in May to celebrate the release of "Bembon" with three Rrecord Release Parties:

Friday, May 19 Kuumbwa Jazz Center Santa Cruz

Saturday, May 20 Great American Music Hall San Francisco

Sunday, May 21 La Pena Cultural Center Berkeley

"Bembon" is a word commonly used in the Afro-cultures of the Americas to describe a person with thick lips. With courage and affection, Omar takes the term as the title of his new CD to symbolize the common African roots of black music and culture in the Americas.  Throughout this new recording we hear Omar's genius as an arranger and his extraordinary inspiration at the piano.
