Merida was born in Bario de Belen, Havana, Cuba and lived in the New England area for many years where she was well known as a singer, bandleader, and promoter. She led an effort over more than 30 years to keep Cuban culture alive in Boston.

She played with her group, Mambole, at many locations in the Boston area.

Funeral services

Merida Castillo passed on, Wednesday March 8, 2006. There was a gathering and a viewing from 8 AM to 12 AM, Sunday, March 12, 2006, at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home, Jamaica Plains, MA.

Her many friends and family members gathered, drums came out and musicians played rumba, accompanied by most in the crowd, as we all celebrated her life. A cousin was able to see how well loved she was and transmit her impressions back to her family in Cuba. Plans are being made for a memorial service, and we will post these here when finalized.

Sun-un re, o, o.mo. iya! (sleep well, our sister)

Contribution to help with the funeral should be made out to Luisa Castillo and sent to:

Castillo, PO Box 300575, Jamaica Plain 02130
