mancdcvr pictureManolito y su Trabuco

One of the newest and most dynamic bands in Havana these days is Manolito y su Trabuco. Founded by Manolito Simonet on February 25, 1993, they have quickly become one of the favorite dance bands in the capital city, playing all the hottest night clubs.

A talented young pianist, Manolito Simonet has four albums under his belt. He has also recorded for other groups outside of Cuba, such as Irazú. Many of Manolito's compositions have been played by top Cuban bands such as Elio Revé y su Charangón and Charanga '86, and have also been used in movie soundtracks.

The eleven group members have all graduated from the National School for the Arts, and have toured internationally. Most of them, including Manolito, are former members of the progressive charanga group Orquesta Maravilla de Florida. When Manolito y su Trabuco was created, they were a charanga group consisting of three singers, with the addition of two trombones and a trumpet. The band was a big hit when they played live on Cuban radio and on the television show Mi Salsa. Now with the release of this CD, Manolito y su Trabuco will be spreading their magic throughout the world!

Manolito write-up at SOB's

Manolito, Cuba's new #1 star, heir to the legacy of Cuba's musical heroes.

Composer, arranger, virtuoso pianist Manolito is the next generation. His influences are clear -- the Cuban legends of yesterday and today, masters like Juan Formell & Los Van Van, Adalberto Alvarez, Joseito Gonzalez and Lili Martinez. A self-taught musician, he earned his stripes as a member of such groups as La Inspiracion, Lagrimas Negras, Senen Suarez, and Maravillas de Florida, then founded his own group, Manolito y su Trabuco, in 1993. It is here that Manolito honed his skills and refined his trademark sound. With his "Trabuco", Manolito combines fundamental elements of charanga and jazz bands into a powerhouse of strings and brass, uniting past and present in a flawless melding of styles. While firmly rooted in the traditional Cuban rhythms of the past, Manolito y su Trabuco create music that challenges boundaries and pushes forth into the future. Yet Manolito has resisted the easy crossover route taken by so many of his contemporaries. Unlike their deliberate synthesis of styles, Manolito's sound is organic, the fruition of a century's worth of cultural growth. "Trabuco" translates as "war machine" Manolito's ammunition is his skill, his style, and his profound understanding of the music of his country - tools that enable him to glide gracefully through "salsa" rhythms, from son to bolero to danzon to mambo to guaracha to cha-cha-cha His rhythms set fire to dance floors, inspiring dancers to create new steps. His melodies break the hearts of the young and old alike.

Manolito knows his past. Now he stands ready to lead Cuba into the future. On the eve of 2000, SOB's welcomes this hero with open arms.  -- http://www.sobs.com/2000/manolito.htm
