Cuba’s First Independent Urban Music Label Is Dedicated to Black Resistance 10/25/2017 Remezcla: "In
Guampara, Havana’s sounds of resistance find a home. The studio and record label
is a consistent force in unearthing ways to maintain and honor the connection
with Cuba’s past and its interconnected history with Africa, while also creating
content that’s relevant to today. As label manager Laura Catana puts it, “It’s
about staying rooted in the past while looking forward towards the future,” a
mission she pushes with label founder and owner DJ Jigüe."
Premiere: Cuban Rapper El Individuo’s “Mi Raza” Is An Ode To Blackness 8/18/2017 Vibe: "AfroRazones
– a space for Afro-Cuban expression, archiving a Cuban manifestation of Black
resistance in 2017 – was born last year inside DJ Jigüe’s Guampara Studios. It
was nurtured by a team of Cuban and U.S.-based artists and organizers (including
LPZ who produces for Cuban hip-hop luminaries, Danay Suarez and Los Aldeanos)
that recognized the impending changes of the current sociopolitical transitions
and diplomatic relations at play."
AfroRazones
Presents: Mi Raza - El Individuo (de Con100cia) 8/6/2017 Guampara: ""Mi
Raza" by El Individuo of Con100cia, Album: Afrorazones"
‘AfroRazones’ Compilation Traces the Legacy of Black Resistance From Havana to
the Bronx 5/21/2017 Remezcla: "Beyond the high-level quality of
AfroRazones, however, is the importance of archiving the methods of
collaboration, cultural production, and the discussions that emerged throughout
the process of sharing knowledges in recording sessions and workshops. In this
sense, AfroRazones offers a model example of representation and cultural
exchange, but also of archiving the process of building bridges between Black
resistance movements. In that way, we are armed not only, as the project has
described, “with the wisdom of our ancestors,” but also with the music industry
tools to support Afro-Cuban artists’ continued prosperity in the digital age."
Yissy & Bandancha), productor."
Rositik’s “Yo No Soy” Collides Timba and Hip-Hop to Celebrate Black Cuban
Resistance 4/24/2017 Remezcla: "Back in the summer of 2016, a group of
Cuban and U.S.-based artists got together at Guampara Studios in Havana to
examine Afro-Cuban identity, creative expression, and support systems on the
island. They conceived AfroRazones, a multimedia project and compilation album
that proudly brandishes the sound of Afro-Cuban resistance."
El Individuo Connects Black Cuba To The World On “Mi Raza” 4/7/2017 Fader: "The
very first single from the forthcoming AfroRazones mixtape sets the project's
tone. "Mi Raza" is a blistering personal history from the rapper El Individuo,
about what it means to be a black Cuban or, as he says, afrodescendient. It's
the first of 11 more tracks on the AfroRazones hip-hop and R&B compilation
project that unpack black identity in Cuba, to protect it and also boost
transnational solidarity at a peculiar political moment for the slowly-opening
island nation, as well as the world. With the help of DJ Jigue, AfroRazones was
created last summer in Havana by Cuban and U.S.-based artists (including FADER
contributor Luna Olavarría Gallegos) as the effects of diplomatic changes began
to trickle down to the people."
DJ Jigüe Explores The Sound Of Afro-Cuban House With “Sigue Los Pasos” 8/4/2016 The
Fader: "Electronic fusion musician DJ Jigüe is always working on something. Part
of Santiago de Cuba's DJ scene since 2004, the experimental DJ and producer has
traveled all over the world, presenting his many projects and collaborations to
audiences from Canada to Brazil. In 2014, he founded Guámpara Music, his own
independent music production company, with the goal of showcasing the
ever-changing fusion of sounds borne of el barrio."
A Night of Cuban
and US Hip Hop in Havana 10/5/2015 Havana Times: "The speakers come alive
with the music of Danay Suarez, Fifty Cent, Ruta 11, Bob Marley, Pesadilla,
Michael Jackson, and people sing, dance and “groove,” as they say here. Guampara
Music offers a more Caribbean rap, the band members being from Santiago de Cuba.
One of them, Golpe Seko, tells us it’s “Afro-Cuban rap.” The two are also a
family with a baby waiting back home in Santiago de Cuba."
Guámpara Music: Feet planted in Santiago de Cuba but eyes on the continent 6/30/2015 La
Habana: "If you describe Guámpara Music as a brand-new project, you will find
it’s only half the story. The truth is that the men and women in the project
have been busy for over ten years working on urban music production and
promotion in their hometown of Santiago de Cuba. All you have to do is listen to
them for a while. Listen to them and to the music in order to be convinced that
this group has more than a couple of things to say on the contemporary music
scene." - Interview with Isnay Rodríguez (DJ Jigüe).
estadounidenses."
