This film continues the strategy of Gloria Rolando and her group, Imágenes del Caribe: rescue and preserve AfroCuban cultural expressions. Presentation of the documentary “Los marqueses de Atarés”, 2/02

On Wednesday 6th of February, 2002, the premiere of the documentary "Los marqueses de Atarés" was held in the Casa de la Cultura del Barrio. The Atarés community in the municipality of Cerro, Havana, was the first audience for this documentary. This was accoding to the wishes of Gloria Rolando, given that throughout the 46 minutes of the video, it is the neighbors in the barrio of Atarés who are the principal protagonists.

It was "Los marqueses de Atarés," along with the other traditional comparsas "La jardinera", "Los componedores de batea", "La Sultana", "Las bolleras", "El Alacrán", etc., who have given a particular stamp to the Havana carnaval since the 30s. Their music and songs permeate the memory of many Havana residents who, generation after generation, enjoy the congas which identify each group and each barrio. The people, humble blacks, gave birth to these cultural expressions into which they put all their creativity and imagination to dance with the rhythm of the drums. Until now we know about the comparsas, but their members have remained anonymous; for this reason, the goal of this documentary is to get closer to the people in this history. There was a period - in the 20th century - when the comparsas were prohibited the same as were other expressions of afrocuban culture. We broach these themes in the documentary with interviews of prestigious Cuban intellectuals.

From the beginning, the comparsa "Los marqueses de Atarés" was made up of rumberos, santeros and abakuá, all organized by Victor Herrera, the founder. Currently, it is under the general leadership of Mercedes Herrera, the daughter of Victor, who is 72 and began dancing in the comparsa at the age of 8.

The documentary "Los marqueses de Atarés" is a production of Television Latina in collaboration with the video group Images of the Caribbean, lead by the afrocuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando. The main scenes were filmed in June, July, and August of 2001, which coincided with the festivals of the Havana carnival.

In parallel, we filmed scenes in the Atarés neighborhood: an encounter with the comparsa's leadership where they remembered old songs, and an interview with Mercedes. Also we had the privilege of interviewing the famous rumbero Mario Dreke (Chavalonga). We found an excellent accompaniment to complete this story in the archives of the National Library. The incorporation of Cuban actor Alden Knight was a good move. He interprets a character in the barrio who recounts all the history through the recollections of the comparsa members, the marqueses. His manner of saying the texts written by Gloria Rolando helped give coherence to the script and supported the main goal: to not let collective history die, there is always a voice that can tell the story.

That night of the 6th of February was a beautiful cultural story telling in this Havana neighborhood. The children and the adults who filled the hall (about 100 people) enjoyed it and learned. They were very surprised by the old images of the comparsa which appear in the documentary. In addition to the joy, they felt pride.

Present at the premiere were community cultural authorities and others: Carlos Bartolomé (historian of El Cerro); Juan García (director of the Conto Folklorico Nacional); Johanes García (director of Grupo Folklórico "JJ"); and the distinguished Cuban actor Alden Knight. Among the members of the film crew were Gloria Rolando (director); Aida Arrondo (producer); José M. Riera (director of photography) who has worked with Images of the Carribean since its foundation; Gilberto Martínez (who made his debut as cameraman in this production and to whom we owe the beautiful and expressive images of the language of the drums).

Gloria Rolando premiered this documentary, with English subtitles, in the US in the fall of '02.

El miércoles 6 de febrero se realizó la primera exhibición del documental “Los marqueses de Atarés” en La Casa de la Cultura del Barrio. La comunidad de Atarés, del municipio El Cerro, en Ciudad de La Habana, fue el primer público en disfrutar el documental. Así lo quiso su directora, Gloria Rolando, ya que a través de los 46 minutos que dura el video, son los vecinos del barrio de Atarés, los principales protagonistas de esta historia.

“Los marqueses de Atarés”, al igual que otras comparsas tradicionales (“La jardinera”, “Los componedores de batea”, “La Sultana”, “Las bolleras”, “El Alacrán”, etc.), le dieron un sello particular al carnaval habanero desde los años 30. Sus músicas y cantos permearon las vivencias de muchos habaneros y habaneras que generación tras generación, disfrutaron de las congas que identificaban a cada agrupación y a cada barrio. Estas expresiones nacieron del pueblo, de la gente negra y humilde que pusieron toda su creatividad e imaginación para danzar con los ritmos del tambor. Hasta el presente, llegan estas comparsas, pero sus integrantes son personajes anónimos; por eso el objetivo del documental es acercarse a la gente de esta historia. Hubo una época -durante el siglo XX- en que las comparsas fueron prohibidas al igual que muchas otras expresiones de la cultura afrocubana. En el documental se aborda el tema a través de las entrevistas realizadas a prestigiosos intelectuales cubanos.

La comparsa de “Los marqueses de Atarés” desde un inicio estuvo integrada por los rumberos, los santeros y los abakuá del barrio, todos ellos organizados por la figura de Víctor Herrera, fundador de la comparsa. En la actualidad está bajo la dirección general de Mercedes Herrera, hija de Víctor que tiene 72 años y comenzó a bailar en la comparsa a la edad de 8 años.

“Los marqueses de Atarés” es una producción de Televisión Latina en 
colaboración con el Grupo de Video “Imágenes del Caribe” que dirige la realizadora afrocubana Gloria Rolando. Durante los meses de junio, julio y agosto del pasado año, fueron filmadas las principales imágenes de este documental, coincidiendo con las fiestas del carnaval habanero.

Paralelamente se filmaron imágenes en Atarés: un encuentro con la dirección de la comparsa donde se recuerdan antiguos cantos, la entrevista de Mercedes; también tuvimos el privilegio de entrevistar al famoso rumbero Mario Dreke (Chavalonga). Un gran complemento para narrar esta historia lo encontramos en los Fondos de la Biblioteca Nacional. La incorporación del actor cubano Alden Knight fue muy acertada. El interpreta un personaje del barrio que cuenta toda la historia a través de sus recuerdos de los marqueses. Su manera de decir los textos escritos por Gloria Rolando ayudaron a darle coherencia al guión y no se aparta este estilo del objetivo principal: no dejar morir la historia colectiva, siempre hay una voz que puede contar.

La noche del 6 de febrero fue un bello acontecimiento cultural en ese barrio habanero. Los niños y los adultos que llenaron la sala (aproximadamente 100 personas) disfrutaron y aprendieron. Mucha sorpresa causaron las antiguas imágenes de la comparsa que aparecen en el documental. Pero además de la alegría, se sintieron orgullosos.

Estuvieron presentes en la exhibición autoridades culturales de la comunidad y otros: Carlos Bartolomé (historiador de El Cerro); Juan García (director del CFN); Johanes García (director del Grupo Folklórico “JJ”); y el destacado actor cubano Alden Knight. Entre los miembros del equipo de realización se encontraban presentes Gloria Rolando (directora); Aida Arrondo (productora); José M. Riera (director de fotografía) quien ha trabajado con “Imágenes del Caribe” desde su fundación; Gilberto Martínez (quien debutó como camarógrafo en esta producción y a quien le debemos bellas y expresivas imágenes del lenguaje del tambor).
