CANVAS symbolCANVAS, Gene Sharp, Venezuela, and Cuba

"CANVAS is a spinoff of Otpor, a Serbian protest group founded by Srdja Popovic in 1998 at the University of Belgrade. Otpor, which means “resistance” in Serbian, was the student group that worked alongside US soft power organizations to mobilize the protests that eventually toppled the late Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.

CANVAS has been funded largely through the National Endowment for Democracy, a CIA cut-out that functions as the US government’s main arm of promoting regime change. According to leaked internal emails from Stratfor, an intelligence firm known as the “shadow CIA,” CANVAS “may have also received CIA funding and training during the 1999/2000 anti-Milosevic struggle.”

A leaked email from a Stratfor staffer noted that after they ousted Milosevic, “the kids who ran OTPOR grew up, got suits and designed CANVAS… or in other words a ‘export-a-revolution’ group that sowed the seeds for a NUMBER of color revolutions. They are still hooked into U.S. funding and basically go around the world trying to topple dictators and autocratic governments (ones that U.S. does not like ;).” -- US Regime Change Blueprint Proposed Venezuelan Electricity Blackouts as ‘Watershed Event’ for ‘Galvanizing Public Unrest’  3/11/2019 Greyzone

CANVAS/Srdja Popovic also formed Build a Movement (BAM) which has trained numerous activists.

Otpor and CANVAS have worked closely with Open Society Foundation ever since OSF funded Otpor in their struggle against Milosevic:

The Seed Money for Democracy  1/26/2001 LA Times: "But the multibillionaire philanthropist quietly played a key role in the dramatic overthrow last year of President Slobodan Milosevic. His Soros Foundations Network helped finance several pro-democracy groups, including the student organization Otpor, which spearheaded grass-roots resistance to the authoritarian Yugoslav leader. “We were here to support the civil sector--the people who were fighting against the regime of Slobodan Milosevic the past 10 years,” said Velimir Curgus of the Soros network’s Belgrade branch. “Most of our work was undercover.”"

Soft Coup in Cuba: Two Secret Cables and a Revealing Video  12/10/2020 Iroel Sánchez: "“Younger people, including bloggers, musicians, and performing and visual artists do not belong to identifiable organizations, although they are much better at taking “rebellious” positions with greater popular appeal. However, these people are still strictly controlled by the authorities, avoid the label “dissidents” and do not seem to aspire to any leadership role. The international fame gained by a few, such as blogger Yoanny Sanchez, drives even more jealousy among traditional dissident organizations and prevents them from working with the fledgling networks that younger generations are beginning to form.”"

US Regime Change Blueprint Proposed Venezuelan Electricity Blackouts as ‘Watershed Event’ for ‘Galvanizing Public Unrest’  3/11/2019 Grayzone: "A September 2010 memo by a US-funded soft power organization that helped train Venezuelan coup leader Juan Guaido and his allies identifies the potential collapse of the country’s electrical sector as “a watershed event” that “would likely have the impact of galvanizing public unrest in a way that no opposition group could ever hope to generate.” The memo has special relevance today as Guaido moves to exploit nationwide blackouts caused by a major failure at the Simon Bolivar Hydroelectric Plant at Guri dam – a crisis that Venezuela’s government blames on US sabotage."

CANVAS: The Secrets Behind Venezuelan 'Student Protests' and Juan Guaidó  3/9/2019 No Investigation: "Popovic denies Guaidó's involvement in CANVAS, claiming "He was not with me in Belgrade for training". However, Popovic calls Guaidó "a friend", stating that "many representatives of the Venezuelan democratic movement are my friends, that we have known each other for years and have talked countless times about the political situation in this beautiful but unhappy country" [11]. Popovic's main role in these regime change operations is as a trainer for 'activists', and he says that "I would do everything in my power to help him [Guaidó] to fight against the regime" [11]. According to Stratfor analysts, who were in direct contact with CANVAS, on October 5, 2005, "five [emphasis mine] student leaders from Venezuela arrived in Belgrade for training" [12]. The only sources I can find on this training list four of those students: Ronel Galo, Geraldine Alvarez, Rodrigo Diamanti and Eliza Totaro [13]. This means that one of the students trained has not been named publicly, and it would certainly make sense if that student was Guaidó, protecting his identity since he was chosen as a future leader."

Who is Guaido?  3/3/2019 Orinoco Tribune: "Apparently he was one of the five Venezuelan students sent by the NED to Belgrade in 2005 (Guaidó was then 21 years old) to be trained by CANVAS. The latter is a training group for “nonviolent protests” responsible for various “color revolutions” such as that of the neo-Nazis of Ukraine."

Serbian Activist Denies ‘Training’ Venezuela’s Guaido in Rebellion  2/13/2019 Balkan Insight: "“Of course, I would do everything in my power to help him [Guaido] to fight against the regime that even the army can no longer defend against its own citizens, because they live on the verge of existence in the country with enormous natural resources,” Popovic continued. He also wished “my friend Juan Guaido” success in his fight, calling him “a high-quality, young and educated man recognized even by the [country’s] first neighbours, such as Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, and the entire democratic world as a true and legitimate representative of Venezuela”."

The Making of Juan Guaidó: How the US Regime Change Laboratory Created Venezuela’s Coup Leader  1/29/2019 Gray Zone: "While Guaidó is today sold as the face of democratic restoration, he spent his career in the most violent faction of Venezuela’s most radical opposition party, positioning himself at the forefront of one destabilization campaign after another. His party has been widely discredited inside Venezuela, and is held partly responsible for fragmenting a badly weakened opposition."

Purpose Goes to Latin America [Part II]  8/26/2018 The Wrong Kind of Green: "Part 4 of the 2017 investigative series on Avaaz analyses the role of Harvard University in global destabilization campaigns via the churching out of “activists”, “thought-leaders”, think tanks and doctrines at large. Of particular interest is Srdja Popovic, co–founder of Otpor, now rebranded as Center for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS) and his position at Harvard Kennedy School as Lead Instructor for the Harvard “executive education” program, Leading Nonviolent Movements for Social Progress. Popovic leads the course with Otpor co-founder Slobodan Djinovic."

The Big ISIS and SDF Lies of the US—‘Kurdistan’ and New Gas Wars  10/4/2017 William Engdahl: "Many readers likely never heard the name of the remarkable Serbia-born political operator named Srda Popovic. Yet he and his organization, CANVAS, have played a lead role in most every CIA-backed Color Revolution since he led the toppling of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, at least fifty according to last count. Now he has turned his sights on Hungary and Hungary’s popular and defiant Prime Minister Victor Orban."

The Dishonest Career of the Remarkable Srda Popovic  1/10/2017 New Eastern Outlook: "Many readers likely never heard the name of the remarkable Serbia-born political operator named Srda Popovic.

What won’t happen in Cuba: Tania Bruguera and the frustrated puppeteer  1/6/2015 CubaSi: "CANVAS has activists in over 100 countries and some of them have visited Cuba geared at promoting their “business” among local mercenaries. Among the 50 crucial points of a struggle, which is not nonviolent at all, let us see only the latest cases of Ukraine and Venezuela, and we find the use of artistic activities of various kinds, in unauthorized spaces, because those spaces require special permissions, places of complex security structure, the authors recommend to occupy sites linked to government institutions, to study the laws of the country well, to look for points of conflict and to plan the actions taking into account this key element, that is, they propose to violate local laws in order to promote confrontation. That was what Tania Bruguera came to Cuba for and her contractors and promoters counted on it, that’s why they chose the Revolugtion Square, that’s why the artist refuses again and again to use the spaces offered by the National Council of Fine Arts, neither factories, schools, galleries, nor universities, the Revolution Square or nothing."

Polisario Hires Serbian Mafia  3/14/2014 Sahara News: "These young people benefit from training to insurrection methods, mobilization and uprisings in the streets and public squares and via the web. The would-be insurgents are trained to other techniques such as assault and escape tactics, making and use of explosives, burning of vehicles, obstruction of traffic, destruction of public and private property, attack of institutions, sabotage, looting of shopping centers, propaganda tactics and other insurgency tactics. Social networks have actually revealed that these are precisely the same procedures used by young Sahrawis who are paid by the Polisario and the Algerian regime to do the dirty job in Western Sahara."

Exposed: Globally Renowned Activist Collaborated With Intelligence Firm Stratfor  12/2/2013 Occupy: "Lesser known, an exclusive Occupy.com investigation reveals that Popovic and the Otpor! offshoot CANVAS (Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies) have also maintained close ties with a Goldman Sachs executive and the private intelligence firm Stratfor (Strategic Forecasting, Inc.), as well as the U.S. government. Popovic’s wife also worked at Stratfor for a year."

Wikileaks Docs Expose Famed Serbian Activist’s Ties to ‘Shadow CIA’  12/2/2013 In These Times: "“A little reminder that the main utility in this contact is his ability to connect us to the troublemakers around the world that he is in touch with. His own ability to discern situation on the ground may be limited, he mainly has initial contact with an asset and then lets them do their own thing,” reads a May 2010 email written by former Stratfor Eurasia Analyst Marko Papic. “He does himself have information that may be useful from time to time. But, the idea is to gather a network of contacts through CANVAS, contacts that we can then contact independently.”"

Desperate for Destabilization in Venezuela, US Funded OTPOR Rears It’s Ugly Head  1/14/2013 Wrong Kind of Green: "Otpor, as reported by the New York Times, was a well-oiled movement backed by several million dollars from the United States via the US National Endowment for Democracy (NED). Otpor (now calling itself CANVAS) has since been most instrumental in the recruiting and training behind the imperialist destabilization campaigns crushing sovereign states, and the far from spontaneous “Arab Springs”. “The tranquility prevailing in Tachira, Venezuela, was interrupted a few days ago by violent right wing youth groups that are sponsored by foreign NGOs. The so-called “white hands” that do not recognize the government and the vice president, Nicolas Maduro, as well as the decision by the Supreme Court of Justice allowing President Chavez to take oath before this judicial institution. COPEI Party, the Popular Will Party and the first justice party are encouraging sabotage and terrorism in the state of Tachira. They are wishing for a person to die or be injured, but we will not allow it. … [Source: TelesSUR]."

VZ elections  9/23/2010 WikiLeaks - Global Intelligence Files: "This analysis tends to cover Situation (I), Pillars of Support (II) Key Opposition Stakeholders and their allies (III), List of potential issues in the campaign (IV) in Venezuelan Society in the face of forthcoming parliamentary elections in September 2010, and it is based on Strategic Estimate performed by CANVAS and its Venezuelan partner 2006,series of independent, academic and institute analysis in 2006-2009. as well as opinions from relevant international analysts in January 2010. Its goal is to provide basis for more detailed planning potentially performed by interested performers and CANVAS. The follow up of this analysis will appear in Plan Format later during the process after consultations with stakeholders."

INSIGHT - VENEZUELA: Update on Protests  2/2/2010 WikiLeaks - Global Intelligence Files: "Two very small updates on your analysis. First, the homicide rate you quote for 2009 is a bit over 12,000. Security analysts I spoke to said the number is closer to 18,000. It's hard to know because the police do not report many of them, but I spoke to someone very respected who said it is much higher than that official number. The police have recently stopped providing homicide statistics because it has gotten so bad."

Re: Guidance: Exxon and Venezuela  2/13/2008 Wikileaks: "Lots of US funding... I don't have specifics, but I did talk to some of the people who lobby for them to get funding (like Mike McFaul over at the Hoover Institute). US AID is involved closely. Also, Otpor (the organization that brought down Milosevic and that spawned Canvas) was funded by Freedom House, the International Republican Institute, National Endowment for Democracy, Open Society Institute, USAID and the United States Institute of Peace, among others. Since Canvas is basically the same people as Otpor, I am sure they have the same avenues of $$$ open to them."

Info on CANVAS (Otpor) - Venezuela: The Marigold Revolution?  10/5/2007 Wikileaks - Stratfor: "Demographically, Venezuela is very young, and thus in political terms student groups are potentially powerful. Additionally, the student movement is probably the most cohesive single faction within the Venezuelan opposition to President Hugo Chavez — which is itself perhaps the most ineffective and fractured opposition in Latin America. Venezuelan students only recently became active in anti-Chavez activities, and formed the backbone of opposition to decision to not renew the broadcasting license of RCTV, the country’s only meaningful private television station."

LANDMARK FORUM BRINGS TOGETHER YOUNG CUBAN ACTIVISTS  11/27/2006 WikiLeaks: " An unprecedented opposition youth forum brought together young Cuban pro-democracy activists and counterparts from Monterrey, Mexico on November 24 in Havana. The three-hour-long event, held at the PAO Residence, saw participants engage in open debate after watching an inspirational documentary on the fall of Milosevic. Many of the participants agreed on the need to coordinate the activities of the country's three biggest opposition youth groups. They acknowledged that they are much weaker than the Yugoslav youth groups (especially OTPUR) depicted in the documentary."

THE MONEY TRAP  9/1/2003 Open Society News: "Poster from anticorruption campaign conducted by the Serbia civil society organization, Otpor! (Resistance!). Text reads: “What is the price of the law? Let’s eradicate corruption— so the law will be the same for all. People’s Movement Resistance!”"
