2c-Ekpe house

In the Ekama-Ngolo communities, Ekpe houses are often constructed in the form of a tortoise, a symbol of wisdom and longevity. These are believed to be ancient architectural designs and have taboos against modernization of the materials or forms. According to Cuban Abakua leaders, their Abakua temples also used palm-thatched curtains at their entrances in the 19th century.
