Orlando "Puntilla" Ríos
1947-2008

Havana percussionist who moved to NY during the 1908 Mariel and became the leading influence in bata and rumba. He played at many tambores in the NY area and made several CDs:

He interpreted "Oferere" and "Arere" on the "Totico y sus Rumberos" record in 1992, in which he was the musical director.

He formed his own group, "Nueva Generación," which released a live album, "Spirit Rhythms" in 1987 -- this is now out of print.

He worked with EmilioBarretto on the  Santissimo CD, released in 2001.

Homenaje a Puntilla, 8/29/09

"Hoy desde la 1pm se le hizo un homenaje a Orlando Rios ´´Puntilla´´ en el solar en Picota, Belen donde vivio. Se hizo una Rumba y alli entre otros se encontraban: Manolito Piloto, Mocongo de Ibiabanga. Heriberto Moran, Isue de Ikanfioro. Ismael Quintero, Moni Bonko de Ikanfioro, Juan Campos, Isue de Muñanga. Juan d'Dios, Abaraco. Guillermo Triana, Moni Bonko Ibondad. Chapotin, Ikanfioro, Felito Ikanfioro, Chirino, Isunekue Ikanfioro. El Goyo, Irianabon, Lazaro Badia, Mosongo Efori Nkomo, Nilo, Mocongo Abaraco. Luis Aspirina, Endure. Domingo Pao, Betongo. entre muchos mas." -- Frank Oropesa, 8/29/09
