Cuba’s Musical Heritage: 
The Performing Arts in Cuba

Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad
November 22-29, 2003

For the 2nd Year in a row, Cuban music critic, literature professor and poet Dr. Alan West Durán leads a trip to Cuba to explore the musical heritage and the performing arts of Cuba. The group will meet the people of Cuba, learn their music and dance, and wind up in Havana again for the triumphant opening nights of the JoJazz Festival of new musicians.

$1750.00 per person, double occupancy

Costs inc RT air Miami/Havana, accommodations, transportation, breakfast and additional meals, program, English speaking guide, medical/evacuation, visa, assistance, and fees

Schedule

Sat – Nov 22

10:00 am Check in at Gulfstream Charters in Miami Int’l Airport.

1:00 pm Depart for Havana.

2:00 pm Arrive Havana. Transfer to the Hotel Riviera.

7:00 pm Welcome dinner, followed by an evening of music.

Sun – Nov 23

7:00-9:00 am Breakfast at the hotel.

10:00 am Meeting with young musicians rehearsing for upcoming JoJazz festival.

12:30 pm Lunch in Santiago de las Vegas with Alberto Faya and his family, followed by a musical performance. Presentation by the Boyeros Troubadours.

4:00 pm Tour the performing arts centers of Old and New Havana. Later attend a chamber music concert in Old Havana, at San Francisco de Asis Church, and meet with the musicians.

Evening Dinner with local dancer and others, followed by a visit to the Delirio Habanero or the Café Cantante

Mon – Nov 24

7:00-8:30 am Breakfast at the hotel.

9:30 am Meeting at the Instituto de la Música for a briefing on the performing arts in Cuba.

1:00 pm Break for lunch

3:00 pm Meet with performers and/or performance.

7:00 pm Dinner at a local paladar, followed by music at the Jazz Cafe or La Zorra y el Cuervo.

Tue – Nov 25

7:00-8:30 am Breakfast at the hotel.

9:30 am Visit the Higher Institute for the arts. Meet with students and faculty.

1:00 pm Break for lunch.

Afternoon Meet with performers or visit school.

Evening Visit clubs and cafés for music and dancing.

Wed – Nov 26

7:00-8:00 am Breakfast at the hotel.

8:30 am Early departure for Cienfuegos by bus, arriving about noon. Check into Hotel Rancho Luna and after lunch, visit the Terry Theater, followed by a performance by local talent.

Afternoon. Meet with local musicians, actors and dancers. Dance lessons with local teachers.

Dinner Palacio del Valle with piano stylings of local musician. Move on for late night dancing.

Thu – Nov 27

7:00-8:30 am Breakfast at the hotel.

9:00 am Depart for Trinidad. Tour the city, then meet performers at the Casa de Joven Creador.

4:00 pm Depart for Havana, arriving about 8:00 pm. Check into Hotel Riviera.

9:00 pm Join in the activities of JoJazz.

Fri – Nov 28

7:00-8:30 am Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning Visit to Guanabacoa for meeting with performers in the African Yoruba tradition. Tour the Museum of the City with its memorabilia of Cuban singer Bola de Nieve, and its famous collection of artifacts and information on Cuba’s African syncretic religions.

Aft & Eve Jo Jazz Activities.

Sat – Nov 29

7:00-9:00 am Breakfast at the hotel.

1:00 pm Check out of hotel and transfer to airport.

3:40 pm Depart for Miami.

4:40 pm Arrive Miami.
