During that sojourn in the late 1950s, “I became salsified, totally absorbed into the Latin culture,” he said. “The music wasn’t called salsa yet, but I became an Afro-Cuban nut, just studying the history and the old photographs and going to see Beny Moré, Orquesta Riverside and all those people in person.” Returning to New York just as Fidel Castro came to power, he resumed playing as a sideman until forming his own orchestra, which had a distinctively brassy sound that paired trumpets and trombones with his percussive piano."

Art exhibit explores Cuba’s African heritage  5/25/2010 Repeating Islands: "Artists participating in the show will include Belkis Ayán, Manuel Mendive, Bernado Almoguea and René Peña. Ayón, a lithographer, explored Afro-Cuban religion. Her worked combined the myth of Sikan and the traditions of the Abakuá, a men’s secret society. She committed suicide at the age of 32. Mendive, who also emerged from the revolutionary road, has received numerous awards for his work. He has participated in many group and solo art exhibitions in Cuba and Europe. Almoguea is known for painting brightly coloured, politically probing works from his government-owned potato stand. A self-taught photographer, Peña explores the problems of racial and social minorities in his art. His works are part of private collections in Cuba, Italy, the United States, Switzerland, Belgium and Argentina, among other countries. In all, 26 artists will participate in the exhibition, which will show about 80 works. They include the internationally acclaimed artists Joe Bedía, Yoan Capote, Carlos Garaicoa, Armando Mariño, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Elio Rodríguez, Douglas Pérez and Roberto Diago. “The City is proud to be part of such an event that will bring the Cuban touch to our doorstep, and that our citizens will be able to share this wonderful and unique experience,” it said."

From Five to Seven, Redux  4/27/2010 Ethno Cuba: "From Five to Seven was the greatest radio show in 1990s Havana, broadcasting every day, between five and seven and between 1994 and 1999, on Radio Taino. That is the reason why I did a lot of my ethnographic fieldwork there! It was devoted to Latin music broadly conceived, but as timba grew, the show became its main showcase. Major bands like Manolin El Medico de la Salsa, Manolito (el del Trabuco), Bamboleo and others became BIG because of this show. "

Harlem's Afro-Cuban Renaissance  4/27/2010 Village Voice: "Bobby Sanabria's big band hits hard, fast, and with clear purpose. "We play Cuban music with a New York attitude, all dedicated to the community that has been keeping this music alive for more than half a century," the drummer explains between songs, seated front and center before his expansive kit. The Black Roots of Salsa. A documentary film.  4/17/2010 Ethno Cuba: "The movie is about the Black Roots of Salsa and the Evolucion of Rumba. It covers not only the musical aspects of this heritage but also dancing and the lived experience. It shows a complex culture through the lens of certain families who live their tradition and inherit them through the generations. The film starts with the state of contemporary Rumba, as shown by young practitioners in Havana. It also covers some of the genre’s history in its three variants: Yambu, Guaguancó and Columbia. As a non-religious manifestation, Rumba was accessible to a broad audience. Nonetheless its roots are set inside Afro-Cuban religions imported from Africa, namely the Abakua, Congo and Yoruba, all of which are covered in the documentary."

Haile Selassie, el polémico redentor de Sión  3/5/2010 Alma Mater: "Haile Selassie, el último Negus de Etiopía, gobernó su país durante más de medio siglo y fue derrocado en 1974 por un militar, una hambruna y una crisis. El militar fue el coronel Mengistu Haile Mariam que lideró una exitosa revuelta popular en contra de la monarquía; la hambruna, la que azotó la región oriental de Etiopía entre 1972 y 1974 que ahogó de inanición a más de 80 mil personas; la crisis, la del petróleo de 1973, provocada por los países árabes en respuesta al apoyo de EUA a Israel durante la Guerra de Yon Kippur. Un año después y a la edad de 83 años, el Negus de Etiopía era asesinado por los militares y sepultado, según dicen, en la letrina de su propio palacio. Sus despojos fueron trasladados desde el Palacio, a una modesta iglesia de la capital. Sin embargo, en el año 2000 sus restos fueron llevados definitivamente a la catedral de la Santísima Trinidad de Addis Abeba donde aún reposan."

The Restless, Happy Story of La Charanga Habanera  12/23/2009 Cuba Now: "David started saying: “Charanga Habanera emerged in 1988, when young, talented Cuban musicians graduated from Cuban school arts got together to develop a popular music project dating back to the 1940s and 50s, to fulfil a commitment at the Montecarlo Sporting Club.” The Montecarlo Sporting!, a place well known by Cubans, because the Lecuona Cuban Boys and the Armando Oréfiche Orchestra performed there, with such eminent musicians as Rafael Somavilla, Leonardo Timor, and Yeyo Escalante. The project was successful for five years, plus the time the contract lasted. At the time, La Charanga shared stages with famous musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Barry White, James Brown, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Charles Aznavour, Jerry Lewis, Kool and the Gang, and Whitney Houston. They also recorded their first CD with DOM."

Legendary Cuban Group Plays SF  11/23/2009 KTVU: "Founded by Pineiro in 1927, Septeto Nacional would become the standard bearer for son as the prolific songwriter penned numerous hits for the group, drawing invitations to play internationally including the Ibero American Fair in Seville, Spain, and the 1933 World Exposition in Chicago. By then, Septeto Nacional had earned such fans as composer George Gershwin who became friends with Pineiro during a visit to Cuba and even quoted one of the bandleader’s songs in his “Cuban Overture.” The Septeto Nacional`s turn-over in musicians was so fast that one scarcely knew who to expect on stage when the group performed live. Pineiro actually left his own septet for financial reasons with Lazaro Herrera taking his place. Septeto Nacional only managed to stay afloat for another two years, finally disbanding in 1937. However, the popularity of the band would lead to future reformations that by the late 1950s would become permanent."

Cuban Musical Pioneers Celebrate an Island’s Soul  11/23/2009 NYT: "There’s no antiquarian dust on Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro, the Cuban band that got started in 1927 and performed on Thursday night at S.O.B.’s on its first American tour in 76 years. The septet was a pioneer of the Cuban son (a dance style; son means sound), which is a foundation of modern salsa in this hemisphere and of Congolese soukous in Africa. The Septeto, which has replaced all its musicians through the years — Piñeiro died in 1969 — still plays the Piñeiro repertory. Its Cuban son, and its rumbas and boleros, are music of transparency, tensile strength and phantom drive. Piñeiro’s innovation was to add trumpet to the guitars, percussion and voices of previous son groups, bringing songs an ever-changing countermelody and prefiguring salsa’s horn sections. Piñeiro may well have named salsa music with his 1928 song “Échale Salsita” (meaning “Throw a little sauce on it”), which started the septet’s first set at S.O.B.’s."

Floral wreaths sent by Cuban President Raul Castro and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro were placed on his tomb at the Colon Cemetery in Havana. Artist's work lets Cubans speak out in Havana for freedom  3/31/2009 Miami Herald: " A packed performance art show at the 10th Havana Biennial, a prestigious international festival, turned into a clamor of ''Libertad!'' as Cubans and others took to a podium to protest the lack of freedom of expression on the island. The provocative performance Sunday night, recorded and posted Monday on YouTube, was staged by acclaimed Cuban artist Tania Bruguera, a frequent visitor to Art Basel Miami Beach who lives in Havana. Bruguera set up a podium with a microphone in front of a red curtain at the Wifredo Lam Center, an official art exhibition space and biennial venue. Two actors clad in the military fatigue uniforms of the Ministry of the Interior, the agency charged with spying on Cubans' activities, flanked the podium and carried a white dove. Bruguera let people from the standing-room only audience come to the microphone for no more than one minute. As people spoke, the white dove was placed on their shoulders by the actors. ''Let's stop waiting for permission to use the Internet,'' urged Yoani Sánchez, who has written a controversial award-winning ''Generación Y'' blog chronicling Cuban life under constant threats from the government. ''Libertad! Libertad!'' shouted one man. ''Too many years of covering the sun with one finger,'' said another. To every call for freedom, the audience responded with shouts of ``Bravo!'' The performance appeared to mock a historic Jan. 8, 1959, victory speech by Fidel Castro at which a white dove landed on his shoulder, viewed by many as a sign of divine recognition."

Gallery owners and biennial curators say they are free to show whatever they like, but they tend to sidestep pieces that directly criticize the ruling Castro family or their policies. Ms. Ceballos, who mounts exhibits with the regularity of a seasoned art dealer, is only allowed by law to sell her own artwork, but she can help collectors contact other artists if they're interested in buying other works. He was always there at the rumbas in their solar, they were like family to him. Guillermo was inspired to begin singing rumba by hearing Carlos Embale's older brother, Luis. He would sing with a group called Estrellas Amalianas, along with Lazaro Suazo, Roberto Carillo (a nephew of Tio Tom), and Chino "Mala Noche," now all passed away… El Negro has enjoyed a long and varied career. In 1965 he joined Pello El Afrokán's Mozambique group and later joined Luis "Aspirina" Chacón Medivel's group Sicamarié. He also worked with Lacho Rivero in carnavales, and even worked as a music therapist in a psychiatric hospital. In 1970 he began working with Carlos Embale, playing tumbador on the LP "Conjunto Guaguancó Carlos Embale." Later he began working with the great Coro Folklórico Nacional, (initally formed by Ignacio Piñeiro), with whom he continues today."

He did not study arts formally; instead, he had possibly the best of all masters, the Cuban painter, Humberto Peña. Papa Wendo - Influential Congolese musician who was both lionised and jailed by politicians  8/1/2008 Guardian: "Now known as Wendo, and then Papa Wendo, he recorded his first massive hit, Marie-Louise, in 1948. A light, charming and lilting song, it became so popular that it was credited with magical powers, with devotees claiming that it could heal the sick and raise the dead - to the concern of the church and the Belgian authorities, who had him arrested. It turned out to be a good career move, for Wendo commented later that "when I got out of prison, that song Marie-Louise became even more popular". Wendo, and the artists he inspired, produced new popular music that cut right across the Congo's complex ethnic barriers by mixing local traditional songs with the styles developed by African slaves who had been transported to Cuba. This new Congolese style, rumba, would provide the soundtrack for that brief, hopeful, era in Congolese history, as the country moved towards independence in the late 1950s. Though never actively involved in politics, Wendo was a close friend of Patrice Lumumba, the radical politician who became the Congo's first prime minister in June 1960. Wendo insisted that Lumumba would come to listen to his songs, not to discuss politics."

All the Chicago blues guys dipped into rumba blues, but this was another take on it. The Latin connection was so strong that Bo Diddley used maracas as a basic component of his sound. But sidekick Jerome Green didn't play maracas like a Cuban, and Bo Diddley didn't play that rhythm like a Cuban; he swung it, like an African-American who'd been playing on street corners in Chicago. And Bo Diddley's way of expressing that two-bar feel, known across a wide swath of Africa, was in turn a fountainhead for the development of rock 'n' roll, which would repeatedly cross Afro-Cuban and Af-rican-American rhythmic sensibilities."

Sara Gómez: an untrodden path to a Cuban legacy  11/6/2007 Cuba Now: "Wondering why her documentary works ever vanished from the silver screen after her fictional maiden work of 1974, ¨De cierta manera¨ (One Way or Another), hit Cuban theaters in 1977, the attendees repeatedly referred to Sarita as the visionary she always was. By rekindling old memories of her, the symposium made the point of revisiting her unique talent to grasp, document and, above all, question, the Cuban reality of the 60s, at a time when the whole country was embracing a new social model, while still struggling with old racial and gender prejudices. The validity of Gomez´s cinematic approach for Cuba – and the world at large- today may be an essential outcome of the colloquium. In the 60s many of her chronological peers might had failed to understand that, through her incisive documentaries, Sara Gomez was speaking volumes when she delved into the logical contradictions between desire and reality, change and tradition, slogans and daily life. Oddly enough, however, her films did not made a splash among the filmmaking community of the time, but rather left their lasting imprint in the ranks of playwrights, according to an old friend and former colleague of Sara Gomez’s. Writer Inés María Martiatu recalled during the meeting how De cierta manera opened the doors of Cuban theatres to pieces that also dealt with topics such as social exclusion, male chauvinism and racism, such as Andoba, by the late Alberto Pedro."

Chocolate for Britons  10/5/2007 Granma: "It’s that during this October, at the Chambers Gallery in London, they can admire the one-man show of Chocolate, alias Eduardo Roca Salazar, one of the most outstanding and significant figures in Cuban contemporary visual arts. Colibrí This exhibition by Choco —his first one-man show in that country— is something of a “preview,” because in September 2008, a series of Cuban cultural events will take place in this capital, including music, film, ballet and visual arts exhibitions. Michael Chambers, owner of the above-mentioned gallery, recently traveled to Havana and visited the Taller del Sol workshop, named after the street where it is located, and where Choco currently works. There, acting as curator, he chose about 50 works of art, most of which are larger than four square meters, and which are oil on cloth, colagraphy and mixed media. According to the artist, he is satisfied with his selection and believes that it is a “very interesting exhibition for British eyes.” All of the pieces were made during the last three years, after his one-man show in the National Museum of Fine Arts (2004), titled Abanico de posibilidades (Range of Possibilities), an important moment in his creative activities, a profound look back, given the degree of maturity and the solidness of his creations. From then to date, Choco’s body of work has expanded and experienced growth; that is perhaps due to the fact that his workshop – thanks to efforts by the City Historian’s Office – has increased not just physically, but also “in themes.” "

Afro-Cuba Music Anthology Released  7/7/2007 Prensa Latina: "The most complete anthology of Afro Cuban music was launched today by the Musical Recordings and Editions institution (EGREM). During the event in the Africa House in Old Havana, considered Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, musicologist Olavo Alen described the collection of 10 CDs of the best players of the genre. The recordings include ancient Afro-Cuban songs, Oru de Igbodu, Iyesa, arara, tambor yuca, bembe, tumba francesa, toque de guiros, congos and Abakua. Olavo Alen explained that the purpose of the project was to rescue music previously recorded in Guantanamo, center of this musical form. Chano Pozo’s "Manteca" is Cuban  6/15/2007 Granma: "CHANO Pozo arrived in the United States in May 1946 and it is now 60 years since, together with Dizzy Gillespie, he performed at Carnegie Hall and staged his historic concert at the Town Hall. At the same time, it is also the very same anniversary of the classic African-Cuban jazz piece "Manteca", the creation of Chano Pozo with the collaboration of Gillespie… "The system of looting was simple. In Havana, there were certain stores that sold musical scores with arrangements for bands for the sum of one dollar. Many musicians in the United States sent their representatives to Cuba in order to procure these scores written by local musicians. After having mastered the tunes, they recorded them and added them to their repertoire without bothering to inform the authors. A musician as well-known as Chico O’Farrill from Cuba, from his arrival in New York in 1948, had to bring several lawsuits against a musician who was no less famous for not respecting his rights. Now, the U.S. economic blockade of Cuba makes it exceptionally difficult for Cuban musicians to go the United States and has allowed this traffic to develop with total impunity. A curious irony when U.S. zeal in protecting its own artists’ copyrights from the rest of the world is well known!" "Manteca" imposed a Cuban style on New York, adopting the rhythmic patrons of the Cuban tumbadora in the be-bop style – a creation by dizzy Gillespie, in union with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. Dizzy very much enjoyed music from other parts of the world, especially Cuba. The trumpeter combined African-Cuban dance rhythms with elements of be-bop and traditional jazz improvisation and created a new kind of dance music, which he baptized "Cubop"."

Cuban musician Richard Egües dies  9/1/2006 Granma: "CUBAN musician Richard Egües, one of the most important artistic figures on the island and a former member of the Orquesta Aragón band, died today, September 1, at the age of 82 after a long illness. Egües, a pianist, flutist, composer and arranger, was born in the city of Santa Clara in central Cuba on October 26, 1924. He studied with his father, joined the municipal band of his hometown and trained in various bands before joining Orquesta Aragón in 1953. From the time he joined, the musician gave the band its unmistakable style with the way he played the flute."
